  • President Trump discussed his plan to prioritize highly skilled immigrants and restrict family-based migration at the White House on Thursday. The proposal would tighten migration to focus on nuclear families to the U.S., rather than extended family members.

I've been an immigration lawyer for over 40 years. I am a rule of law guy. I do not believe anyone should break US immigration law. I recognize that our present immigration laws are a joke. Sorry to be so simplistic in that statement, but that says it all. I have written extensively and spoken to lawyer and laymen groups on the subject of immigration. I have witnessed a failed Amnesty program. I have witnessed more than twenty years of lack of enforcement of our immigration laws by the US government. I have witnessed rampant illegal immigration, while at the same time participated in an immigration system that is archaic and unfair and inadequate to meet the needs of America. I understand the system and have opinions that are based on my experienced. I am now retired and have nothing to gain if my ideas were implemented, but America would benefit greatly.

In my opinion, politicians, including Donald Trump, know nothing and don't want to know anything about our present laws and don't care to address the issues that will make our immigration laws work. Each misinformed legislator seeks to garner favor with his/her constituency in order to obtain votes. Immigration has become a political football and so long as that remains, we will get no beneficial change in our immigration law and procedure.

But don't believe what Donald Trump is saying . . . most of what he says is inaccurate, if not blatant lies which non-immigration lawyers understand, but Trump supporters and others do not. Pity on you all.

Eastern countries should change Immigration laws,
    1. Allow people who are skilled and issue them work permits for some years. They earn money and live with a good mark on there resume. Now when they go back to there country they can develop there country.
    2. Don't allow the dependents to work(Wife).
    3. Don't give citizenship status to children who are born when their parents on work permit visa or any visa.
    4. Don't give permanent citizenship to foreign nationals, only allow them to study on student visa, work on visa .
    5. Give only 1 Student Visa term for their education and don't give extension for that, and only 1 term for work visa ;and no extension. Foreigners should leave the country after all theirs visa expire, there should be no extensions.
    6. This will create a cycle which allow new foreigners(students/workers) each year. Foreigners who leave after the end of visa should go back and help in the development of their countries.

I don’t have enough space here to list the number of
inventions by poor American immigrants who initially showed no measurable merit,
or who perfected other inventions, that if they were not here, their inventive curiosities
would not have developed, nor nourished here, rather than in other countries, is
not very likely, as the saying goes, ‘only in America could any of the above have
    been possible’…

What's amazing is that the Bible talks about this very wall that the US will trust in, where God promises to see to it that it falls before invading armies, along with this country, for all the evils committed against its own people, spicifically against, ADOS, and our enslaved, ancestor, as well as against those worldwide, with Africa taking the full force of a american atrocities. So now the average immigrant isn't welcomed in america, as the average Europeans were allowed, as stated on the statue of liberty, but only skilled individuals are now permitted to become US citizens? Sounds like a borderline Hitler plan to me. #SupportADOS

Hate to tell you but this is how Immigration was originally established, but no longer enforced from the 70's on. Back in the early 20th century when you came over to live here you had to #1 be free of disease that was transmittable. #2 had to have a trade or talent to sustain yourself and #3 you had to have a place to live established such as a destination with a relative or job that had been accepted for income. Get a clue. This IS how it should be. Encouraging preference by ability to speak OUR language (yeah it's English) isn't a bad thing let alone already having a good education. WE are NOT paying for it......no more free rides, no automatic entry if your relatives snuck in. It's time to get back to what established us in the beginning. Not this absurd open border craziness these idiot democrats want. NO More free rides.........

Lottery system wasn’t going to help the USA or the world. Merit based system makes USA stronger and it helps the world poverty by having a smart nation and having the wealth to help the world issues. having “illegal immigration” would just means the USA would have to pay taxes for every wave of immigration which takes away from education so how is the world suppose to advance if the USA system is behind on a lot of things. Those are the issues Trump is pointing out.

      KDC705 Month ago

@Silas Bishop It's not the official language. Some government tried to put it as an official language, but none of those attempts actually worked.
The reason why the country is MOSTLY ENGLISH is because English was the most understood language, hence why I can only understand English. The reason why people think that English is the country's official language is because that they think that people who understand a different language, Spanish for example, are taking over. The country's not going to have a language change. It's not in their portfolio. They just want to live in the united states as a citizen, knowing English or not. Why do you think we have Illegal immigrants? They cannot afford a greencard, and they hate their current country. If the US can just up the # of greencards, then they can be citizens.

    • Silas Bishop
      Silas Bishop Month ago

@KDC705 English is the National language. If you can't speak it you are not going to do well in a modern economy. The US doesn't owe these people the opportunity to move here. If they don't speak our language and don't have skills, why would we want them here? Just because they want to come here doesn't mean we have to allow them to come here.

Nothing. Just false claims. Nothing new at all.

  • Cap'n Slipp
    Cap'n Slipp Month ago

Haven't we long had merit-based immigration to the US? Isn't that the difference between a green card and an H-1B? And wasn't merit-based immigration been a part of the checks done at Ellis Island in the early days? I'm sure the liberals will spin this plan as horrible in some way or another but - like many of Trump's initiatives (flight ban, border fences/wall, usage of International Emergency Economic Powers Act) - there's plenty of precedence that these plans aren't uncommon, are effective, and prevent bigger problems (both economic and humanitarian) down the line. Maybe this new initiative goes further and crosses some kind of moral line. That said, we see other nations with highly selective immigration (I'm looking at you, Switzerland) doing just fine, and workers raising their skills in order to meet those countries' standards (I haven't seen population data on this last point; only personal accounts of people who moved there).

Trump is shooting himself on the foot. Educated, professional people all over the world tend to vote Democratic in America. Ignorant, uneducated, religious-oriented people would vote Republican, if you would only respect them. Do you think you can convince a doctor from India that global warming is a Chinese scam? Why do you think Boston, the most educated city in the USA, always votes Democratic?

The current H1-B visa program discriminates, discourages and disenfranchises the American people. If Google, Facebook or any other company needing a “highly skilled” worker that can’t be located in US then too bad, tuff luck, your start up idea dies or is put on hold until you hire and train an American

    • Dev
      Dev Month ago

Don’t get me wrong these companies HAVE the money, time and resources to train Americans. The (CEOs & CFOs) of large corporations and the little baby startup companies are addicted to cheap labor provided by contractors and contracting firms (HCL, Infosys and WiPro, Accenture, etc) that under pay, under cut there H1-B visa holders. This has been going on for at least two decades. If that means Google’s A.I. project or Facebooks Crush project is delayed too bad, train and hire American graduates for that job.
