How about making their bodies taller? I've seen somebody try to use the battle sprites for human enemies since the humans look like giants compared to the playable characters, which looks stupid.

I've finally bothered my A to give this ago. Tbh I was confused so put it off, but basically all that's need is to
    1. Increase Character canvas size by "x" amount Height and/or Width (I did 1.5 Height)
    2. Increase Height or Width of sprite by same (again I scaled 1.5 Height)
    3. Line feet
    and boom done.
    I used Clip studio pro.

That's awesome! Thanks! I've always been more of a fan of the Phantasy Star style of character sprites, rather than the 2D Final Fantasy style as you have more options for character dynamics, just look at the cast of PS IV for example, they're all over the place from the tiny Demi to the massive Wren. On the technical side, one thing I did find is that the middle sprite's head on any given direction is a pixel higher than the side ones. so I would recommend repositioning the sprite a pixel lower if you are doing all three at once and moving it back up when done. or actually maybe two or three depending on the new height, just to accentuate the bobbing motion of walking so it doesn't look so static.

Awesome! I was totally looking for something like this online and not much about it. I was able to take your steps and get started on elongating a character and then did some pixel touch ups to get it looking how I wanted it to since it stretches some things out of proportion. This gave me the starting point to do what I needed to do making characters two heads tall. Thank you very much Echo607!

this is an old post, but when you make your sprites bigger, I 've noticed the weapon no longer aligns with the character and if you go up too much in size, hides it all together, is there a way to manipulate the weapon size and position.. we have tons of art to use but not until we figure that part of it out.

    • Andrew Speed
Andrew Speed 3 years ago +1

odd as it sounds you should be able to acomplish this by just resizing the weaponsheets to be the correct height, this might result in some odly stretched weapons though... but in theory anyway

Fantastic! In RM2K I made a Zelda-like set in Feudal Japan in which a samurai fought sometimes giant yokai like Oni or giant centipedes or spider goblins (Kumo ... Oni? It's been a while...). Know what I had to do?? I had to build the sprites as separate pieces and program them to walk together to give the illusion they were one Sprite!!! Ah, this is fantastic....

So, just a question that's been bugging me about the difference between MV and VX Ace, do I need to add $ at the start of the filename with MV like VX Ace needed for these larger sprites?
Or can large sprites for MV be made without needing to name it in such a manner? I haven't found an answer to this question, and while it doesn't seem like you need to, it's still really bugging me.

I can only imagine that it works the same with combat sprites then!
This way, weapons can be drawn on the combat sprites to give a much better look to them as well as their motions, certainly with an add-on you can customize the add-ons they use during complex attacks right?

So basically, the RPG MAKER MV sprite system is automatically programmed to divide the entire sheet into cubes and does this automatically. You want bigger sprites, submit bigger img files. Or I assume thats correct? :)

I'd say this might work for rough outlines or placeholder sprites or something, but stretched pixels always look really really unprofessional so I'd suggest against using it for anything important. Good tutorial regardless.

You could always use the stretched sprite as a base and draw on top of that.

Not necessarily... The feet should still align with the grid system as usual, however you may find that certain non-character objects need to be resized so they don't look weird in contrast with your enlarged actors.Yanfly's "doodads" plugin is perfect for that, since you can easily re-scale all of your objects as you're placing them.

Whenever I try to select the sprites I have, the selector box dosen't line up with anything and it ends up looking like a glitched mess. +ChoirGirl476 The default sprites are 48x48(to match the tile size)
As long as each frame is the same size(arranged with two rows of four spritesets across) it should work properly.

Now I want to make a 5000 x 6000 pixel sized sprite to see what would happen xDDDDD

Only limit there is, is that Mobile can only handle a maximum texture resolution of 4096x4096 for 3D stuff, I imagine that would apply to 2D sprite sheets as well.

+Echo607 i am planning to go for paralax maps only for backgrounds. And larger sprites. What ever that might mean in the end. I am yet wondering how movement works then. But yeah... Do you think 2.5x the normal size is too extreme?

That's a clever way to do it as quick and easy as possible.

Not sure if its just me but I couldn't get it to work with your demo. All I ended up getting was a character that displayed the 5 different move animations all at once. I remember in VX ace you used to put a ! or $ if I recall. I tried that but no such luck.
