    You can also take the pan out "carefully" after 10 mins in the oven and give it another wipe down to remove excess oil, as that is something newbies often have problems with too much oil. then put it back in.

      @Jason Gordienko it shouldn't, if you get darker spots or so it because you had too much oil left on the pan. Seasoning build up over time with normal cooking btw and the oven thing is just a way to simulate normal use and help build it up quicker when restoring one or when it new to stop it from rusting.

    All I do is just use dish soap to clean it after use and then heat it to remove excess water. It's not like my family constantly seasoned and oiled the pan. Don't really need to do it EVERY time. Be a waste of salt for every single time.

    Says cast iron isn’t hard to maintain.... then goes on a 18 step tutorial of how to use it. But it’s really not that much. Just dry it good after you clean it and it’ll be just fine. Trust me.

    So... I don't own an oven. That's why I thought I'd like a cast iron skillet. Turnes out you actually really NEED an oven before you can even use it... O.o

      Naw if you get a lodge cast iron they are preseasoned, the oven seasoning thing is more when you are restoring a pan that has rusted or somesuch. Other than that everytime you cook and add oil, butter etc etc you areffectively seasoning your pan.

    I had a cast iron skillet and I was so expensive to maintain buying oil every mount buying kitchen paper to wipe all the oil putting it in the oven to bake on the oil it was silly

    Also do not neglect the outside of the pan. With a lot of use you may not totally clean the outside of the pan leading to a crusty build up over time. I did an Aton Brown in pan steak where you pre heat the pan in a very hot oven then move it to high heat on the stove top to sear the steak. Well....the outside my 60 year old #10 skillet burst into flames. Once the fire was out I pressed on and had nice steak dinner.

    Amazing hunk of metal. So ridiculously simple. It sure brings pleasure to us when it's dinner time. It does magic things in short time. No pan can radiate heat the way a well seasoned cast iron skillet can.

    In my German supermarket organic, cold-pressed, pure linseed (i.e. flaxseed) oil is €1.95 per 250 ml. I don't know what you Americans are getting, but it appears you are getting ripped off.

    SORRY BUT....NEVER USE SOAP ON A WELL SEASONED CASK IRON SKILLET....BOIL WITH WATER, SCRAP OUT OLD MATERIAL, USE SMALL TOWEL( NOT PAPER), REGREASE, SEASON AND BAKE...ITS DONE!

    The entire comment section is full of confused young people. They don't understand that seasoning a cast iron is not done that often.
    Cast iron is faster and easier than other pans most of the time. I use two daily.

      @sorg3ns They're inexpensive yes, but it's quite wasteful. If you cook a lot at home, that's a lot of paper towels and salt used.

      Sabrina Benítez It’s a lot of work, granted. But with proper cleaning and seasoning, they can last forever. I have a cast iron pan that’s over 100 years old. It looks brand new and it cooks brilliantly still!
