I don’t know about any of you regarding the animation used for this recent iteration of Richard Adams’ classic fantasy epic, but I at least find, for instance, General Woundwort to be absolutely BADASS!! A great villain in literature whose striking features needed a more realistic makeover for a more realistic portrayal. He’s perfect!
No matter what anyone else thinks of the 40-year-old animated movie adaptation of Watership Down, directed by Martin Rosen, I feel that the animation is caricatural and surreal, even though at that time, back in the ‘70s, it worked a kind of charm on its audience of before, and its tone, appropriately made and placed at certain scenes, sets up the overall theme of the movie’s story, summed up by Joan Bridgeman: “a hero’s journey into a world of terrors to bring back some boon to save himself and his people.” And although the tonal adaptation of the “lapine” epic is not accurately repeated in the 2018 miniseries, it is maintained but also given a fresh perspective.

Loved the Miniseries, since I have watched the film and the TV series. Especially read bits of the book, it really meant my expectations, with great voice cast and story! It even had me inspired to write a fanfiction of remake of the miniseries.

People keep giving this animation shit when really it’s not that bad. It’s no Pixar movie but it’s damn good and doesn’t take away from the story. They only nitpick I have aside from changing a few things from the book is bigwigs character he is such a jerk in this animation.

Honestly I really love this and it's well done in my opinion. This has been my 16th time watching this and everytime I was it I learn more about the story. I feel like they did an amazing job with the characters and all the landscapes. The only problem was the movement with Kehaar the bird like flying and walking. Well done!

The 1978 version was much more haunting, dark and violent. You'd literally see rabbits ripping the flesh off each-other, and gushing blood. I liked this adaptation, but it annoys me that they didn't have any gore. That's what made the combat scenes so intense, and what made Woundwort fearsome. Still, a nice blast to the past I guess.

    • Rares Sava
      Rares Sava 4 months ago

The director said why he removed the violence in this adaptation and he have a really good point. Even if the 78' movie is a masterpiece, the people who just remember seen the original once when they were children, they remember just the fact that it was violent, but nothing about the amazing story and the nice characters. And, these days, Watership Down apear just in violent topics like Top 10 violent movies for kids. But Watership Down supoust to be hartbreaking and emotional and the violence overshadow the brilliant work. Many make the argument that the book is also violent, but there is a difference between reading a scene that's violent and watching it. I think it's better for Watership Down adaptations to suggest the violence instead of showing it for the sake of been more acurate with the tone that the book have.

  • Dissociative Crow
    Dissociative Crow 4 months ago

As someone who loves the book and the old movie, this was pretty good. I was worried it wouldn't be as faithful but for a show it's fairly accurate to the book. The animation is a bit odd but the voice acting (except Hawkbit's) really had me invested in a story I pretty much already knew.

For those who don't even bother giving this a chance, I partially agree with your opinions on the not-so-satisfying CGI.
*However*, the voice acting was so incredible that after watching it for a few minutes, I got so immersed and found myself completely ignoring the bad animation.
That, along with some viscerally exciting and emotionally beautiful scenes, are the reasons I would recommend this to anyone.

Honestly one of the best adventure series I've seen in a long time. It is brutal, not as brutal as the cartoon, but still very, very brutal. Anyone who does not cry or get emotional has no soul after watching this. And honestly, it looks so much better watching it on tv compared to the commercial. Not sure why.

I recently watched the series, and to my surprise it was actually very well out together! The animation not only is beautiful, but they captured the essence of the book into this movie - minus the violence. I'd give this a 7/10, because of other things such as character designs and whatnot.

If you can't bear anything that isn't ultra-perfect animation you won't like this. If you're prepared to take a little rough with the smooth on the CGI front, and instead concentrate on the characters and the actual story, you might like it. It does have a lot of changes from the novel, but overall I'm glad to have seen it. 7/10 perhaps.

Everyone here talking like they are some professional animators just watch the damn movie ya twats. If graphics all that matters then go watch the emoji movie. When you watch animation movie you watch it for these reasons. Story, characters, entertainment, visual graphics. Also talking about graphics they made it look like this on purpose it’s called director’s choice. My ratings for this movie is 8/10.

The TV show was (mostly) the most kid-friendly version of WD there's been and was fairly light-hearted a lot of the time. If you watch this new one, expect it to be darker, both graphically in in terms of some of its themes, though it's not as gory as the 1978 film.

What good are realistic CGI textures on rabbits that don’t look or move like rabbits, or on backgrounds that aren’t affected by what happens in them? Do yourself a favor and watch the 1978 film, which captured more realism using traditional animation. Did a better job with the symbolic segments like Fiver’s visions, too.
