Trying to FIX: Faulty £28 Xbox One from eBay

  • Published on Nov 14, 2019
  • Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to repair a cheap £28 ($36) Xbox One purchased from eBay. Apparently it randomly turns off.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

I can rarely ever find these kinds of deals on ebay. And when I do, the shipping, duties/import fees just double/triple the price. Consider yourself lucky. I enjoy all your videos.

couldve even been a bad/overheating power supply even tho you went ahead and took care of the inside of the machine! great find for 28 euros!

Might have been overheating due to the build up of junk in the xbox, causing it to shut off due to the heat. It's the only thing I can think of. I guess the previous owner didn't go far in depth with looking at the xbox.

Great clean up job, as always! There is no such thing as too much thermal paste, but there is such thing as too little. Too much just means you are wasting money, but it won't hurt the system. I giggle because Steve at TronicsFix says "And that's the perfect amount of thermal paste" when he applies it just to poke fun at the people who feel the need to criticize. You paid for it, you say how much is enough! I wouldn't be surprised if there was an overheating problem too with the fan and vent being so packed with gunk! Ugh! People are nasty!

Some people shouldn't be allowed to own technology. If you got kids keep your consoles locked away. I have my consoles locked behind a glass door on my TV unit.
    Some people are just disgusting.

You know when i would go out to peoples homes and repair the a/c, most people would have there consoles on a carpeted floor or in a tight spot on a shelf with little to no ventilation.

What kind of mat are you using in this video? it seems like it has little screw holders that can even close. I want one. Also, as for whether cleaning it or not would have made it work, I can assure you not cleaning it would have lead to it failing again down the line when ants crawl inside and cause shorts.

I got a deal on a Xbox one s, paid $80 USD and it wouldn't boot up, replaced the HDD with a used 1tb from offerup, formatted it and it works, gifted it to my father and he plays battlefield everyday, year later still working as a new one would. So Xbox one is great, improved from 360 flaws.

Sometimes it depends on where you live. The OG PS4 had a design flaw where cockroaches would enter the PSU and potentially shorting it out. This isn't covered in Sony's warranty.

Thermal paste should be spread out when being applied directly to silicon like that. The method you used is fine if there's an IHS (metal cover).

The amount of thermal compound added in this video seems about right to me. This *does* appear to be a CPU die instead of an IHS over it, so possibly I'm wrong, but you only really need enough to fill the microscopic space between the heatsink and the CPU, too much could indeed affect performance, because thermal paste isnt actually the best at thermal transfer.

you need to use more thermal paste on the chip Vince as its a naked die ie no ihs so you need full coverage of the die
