  • It's been 65 years since the Supreme Court ruled in the Brown v. Board of Education case, declaring school segregation unconstitutional. However, schools are back to becoming increasingly more and more segregated. UCLA Professor Gary Orfield, who co-authored a report on this issue, joins CBSN to discuss his findings.

Teaching Blacks is basically like teaching the grandchildren of cavemen. Blacks are holding back the progress of others because the better races like Europeans and Asians are naturally smarter so equality is impossible. It would be better for society if we recognized these cognitive differences no matter who gets offended.

  • Lee Smith

Black people make up 13% of the population. Black people tend to live in societies that are predominately black. They are in effect segregating themselves. This explains why some schools are predominately black. A predominately black school means they can't make complaints that the curriculum is centered on white people culture and black people can't learn that way. In effect they want their children in a predominately black school. Another form of segregation is putting non English speaking students in separate classrooms where don't have the opportunity to mix with English speaking students. They have a tendency to stay with their peer groups because they are familiar. I live in a predominately white community with nearly 8% black folks and 4% Hispanic folks. My black co worker has said many times he wants to raise his child in a diverse community. The problem is our community can't evolve to diversity if people of color choose to leave our community due to lack of diversity. That is not our fault. He chose to stay. I think it was because of our safe community with an excellent school system which he can't get from diverse communities.

    • Lee Smith
      Lee Smith Month ago

@Adam By choosing to live in neighborhoods that are made up of people of color. When my co worker complained about the lack of diversity in our community he was talking about the lack of black families who choose to live here. We don't have a black neighborhood. When black people move here they are forced into white neighborhoods. No one can accuse us of racism if black people pass us by because there aren't ENOUGH black people. That leads me to believe they intend to hang around with their own people. As one student 9 years ago said when she came to our college, "I have never seen so many white people in one place". She wasn't upset. She was intrigued.

@J Globetrotter Well, none of the justices studied economics. None. So yes, many of us know quite a bit more than the BvB logic. First, this is about economic segregation, not racial. Simple proof of this -Asians are doing better than whites. Wealthy and successful parents want their kids insulated from the riff raff, and it's quite easy to understand why. None of this is about race.

jackelking37 the problem is that on average the minority neighborhoods aren’t being properly taken care of, in way of low funding to education/after school programs (low income minority neighborhoods tend to be more crime ridden) if kids don’t have access to these things they turn to crime.

Josh this isn’t forced through government means, the way segregation works now is through financial means, and since white people on average make more money than certain minority groups they’re disproportionally moving away from public schools and going to private institutions, which means that some public schools are becoming black and Hispanic only. This is caused by the huge wealth and income inequality that’s growing in this country. While everything else is on the rise price wise

@Broken King Your right they are our responsibility until the age of 18. We also have a responsibility to provide the best education we can for them. How's that slavery?

This guy should know that ''desegregation'' in LAUSD in the 70s was an abysmal failure as was ''teacher integration.'' Schools with minority students get significantly more money per student under Title I, which is over and above state per pupil funding, plus the free breakfast/free lunch program as well as free pre-K.

They are now adjusting SAT scores for adversity. Nothing has changed in a positive way when someone is favored for any reason as a student vs others.

That was pretty obvious since the breaking up the schools and the raise of the so-called private schools implemented during the Bush administration.

I'm very happy for private education and homeschooling. It's available for everyone that puts the effort in and is proven to be a way better education. Rich black folks or wealthy black folks send their kids to private schools also. This is more of a class type thing than a race thing.

That's not true. There have been more incentives and cheaper easier enrollment in colleges in past 10 years than ever. Forced segregation vs voluntarily enrolling where they see fit is what's going on and there isn't anything wrong with it. Probably half or more black people hate white people so I don't see what the issue is. Black teens and men cause more than 50% of murders and a huge portion of other crimes from assaults to robberies. I'm not saying white people are innocent but the rates are so much lower could you blame people for wanting to keep their kids safe? There isn't a law saying any black can't enroll wherever they wish. Birds of a feather flock together just how it is everywhere in the world.

@Adam Why they were created is easy to understand. Why they're horrible right now is tougher. There's not even one HBCU that's even mediocre. They all stink, and they all riddle their less than capable students with debt. HBCUs are a scam now.

Over 70 US universities have black only graduation ceremonies. Who would want to go to an HCBU when they'd be ex luded from walking with a majority of the class? Especially after attending the school for years during the "cultural appropriation" era?

@Adrienne King This is such an interesting discussion. And Political Twinkle is using the term self segregation, and from the video, this seems to be the primary reason for school segregation these days... Segregated neighborhoods. Not because of laws or ordinance, but for other reasons. My hood is quite diverse, but I've also lived in neighborhoods that were not as diverse (mainly white and Hispanic) and one that was primarily white and another in college that was primarily black. The schools in the area reflected the demographics of the neighborhood. I'm curious if others think this is the same as race segregation pre Brown vs. Board. ❓❓❓
