Enjoyed spending the last two hours with ya, Derek! Really fun video! Glad yer finally home!
Yoooo its dr. Lee
theses are called [ UTEs in new zealand & Australia, thay were for farmers
It always amazes me that he actually drives these cars home! It's gotta be a white knuckle ride the whole way home!
@Vice Grip Garage those batts,,are they AGM. deep cycle.. not meant for starting. just long drain..
@Vice Grip Garage utes have low diffs, id of got 2" bigget tires.. maybe thats why the wranglers are in the back..
I can't stop peeping at your videos Derek, you sir are what this country needs more of and that is hard working good attitude and good humor please never stop making these vids and keep the wheels turning and your wrenches. Your videos have kept me out of a deep depression for some time now just keep up the great work my friend and thank you for saving me....
@Samuel Stein wow, insensitive much?
Nobody cares
Can I just say asides from how good this guy is on fixing cars in the middle of nowhere how he manages to film it all so well on his own, this one of my favourites for sure.
@Dan InNJ well I'm sure that's editing simply zooming In, I see that all the time on his videos
I used to think that too. If you watch him test the clutch at just shy of the 1 hour mark you'll realize that the camera moves slightly and zooms in on the drinkin' side's rear wheel while he's still trying to find a way to comfortably press the clutch. Someone else had to do that.
nice cars... 2 miles per tank...
Can we take a second to appreciate the condition of this guy's lawn
I was thinking about that, this guy's stripe game is on point
I love these El Camino's ... sadly never sold here.
I'm from Australia and I think I have an answer to your question ... is it car or a truck?
Chevrolet is correct in calling it a coupe utility because that's what it is, and we have here in Australia ( or used to ) An Australian came up with the idea for the first coupe utility in the 1930's and are a crossover between a car and truck, and they are very popular here. Australians know them as "utes"... short for utility. So the El Camino and Ford Ranchero are utes.
Our local Fords and Holdens ( GM cars ) were extremely popular until 2016 / 2017 when local production ended. Look up Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon ute and you'll see a modern day El Camino.
@Daniel Cook it's one of the coolest utes haha
From Australia and complaining about not having elcaminos when they still have “Utes” today. The nerve.
Right answer! 🎉
The only real question is Holden V8, or boosted Barra.🤔😎
One of your best Derek. A guy faced real adversity with this rig. I learned a crap ton of good info. Nice work as always.
Spot On Christopher - I believe this is one of his best videos as well. Explains a couple of things that are very meaningful to us money wrenchers. And of course thanks goes to Derek. What a clown.
He can make anything run if it has a motor in IT
@George Gunsallus Well, 1977 to be exact for GM car bodies . . .
@Vice Grip Garage :Derek another gr8 video. You're really a courageous young man to drive an old car like that for 700 miles. I tell you ain't nothing like good old school Detroit iron. Even though the old rig was clapped out it still refused to die. Today's cars probably won't do that in 61 years time. Say hello to Jessica and the little fellas.
@Raysplace or an engineer's handbook🙂
By far your best production so far. A one man show! This one deserves an Oscar.
Hi Derek, I really enjoyed this one, reminded me of my automotive disasters of my youth in the ‘60s. You mentioned near the beginning of this video that the El Camino inspired Ford to make a car/truck. But, I believe Ford was earlier with their ‘57 Ranchero. I loved my ‘82 El Camino, drove it for fifteen years. Thanks for the rewind, I was feeling like the old girl might not make it.
This man has got the most positive attitude that I have seen in a long time!!!
I can't express how much I absolutely loved this accidental find! I've subscribed and can't wait to watch the rest of your videos! You're awesome! 🤣
Well, despite the problems along the way at least your wife liked it in the end so you get to keep it after all!
Elcomino is a small minimal use affordablimulti task pick up /car
With almost 7 million views, I'll bet she is laughing al the way to the bank.
@.:: KOEN ::. - I’m thinking that it went over well so he can save it for his next purchase.
Get outta here Mr. O you're next in my q. Two legends in one comment section is almost too much for me!
Get a twelve volt waffle iron and save lots O'Money ! 😁🤭🥰
I've been watching you for a little over a year or so. I do the channel lock but I just wanted to post to tell you I always feel better about things after I watch a couple of these. I really enjoy watching you work on the cars and I've learned a good bit. But the way you are with your wife and your boys is great to see and it just lets you know things aren't all that bad. Thanks.
Well, two hours is a long trek but you are definitely good company. I appreciate all the insights you provide on how to get home no matter what. Been there my self more than once. You are correct about the SBC engines...you can't really kill them. They may limp along and even sound really bad, but they keep going. Thanks for another fun ride.
It's amazing how I can't manage to watch a two hour movie but will easily watch Derek do this stuff for two hours. What a talented and funny dude.
Loving this channel! Great content, keep it up!
I LOVE the long format videos. It makes it feel like an event and not just another tik tok time waster 9000 video. Keep up the good work!
@bartsimpsonsonson we sure do have lots of utes here in the great land down under.
Man I am having a problem replying to the wrong comment. This was in reply to Ed Vaioli's comment
The Aussies call it a Ute, I am thinking. They had a lot of them, of different makes.
AGREE 100%
Thanks! Will do!
Best one i've seen so far, great job getting home! Thanks for the details on fixes, inspirational and educational, i'm hooked.
I love going along on your road trip adventures.
Derek, you’re a great mechanic and you never give up.
Hats off to ya ! You definitely have patience and talent w automotive everything!!!!
*Can't believe I watched this whole 2 hours. You're a genius at expressing yourself and explaining things man.*
He said Ranchero got the Idea from El Camino. Wrong. Chev got it from Ranchero.
Call the car Thunderpants!
bump the speed to 1.75 and enjoy more of his vids faster
Very enjoyable. Good descriptions of common automotive problems with a practical solution demonstrated. Good, clear voice with a positive attitude. Well done!
First off CONGRATULATIONS on 6 million views on this video. Secomd, Great job on limping this relic home. Most guys would have walked away and had it trailered home after clutch problem happened .Finally I thoroughly enjoy the tunes you throw in the videos and at 38:40 the sky was just beautiful on the road trip. Keep up the GREAT Work!!🇺🇸🇺🇸
Derek, so much fun to watch your videos. Glad you made it back with that very tired motor. This one was great as I have had my peepers on the innards of more than one small block Chevy, one of which was my grandfather's '60 Belair with a 283 2 bbl. Powerglide. It had lifter click like yours for about 8 years in spite of my best teenage efforts to adjust the valves. It has been a while. Good to see one up close again. They truly were and are a stair step in car tech. My current go to town car has the 420 HP 6.2-liter version. GM has made some advances.
The most beautiful Chevy ever made. The 1960 with the tail fin's laying down slideway's. I would love to have that El Co as a daily driver. As a California boy it is a surfer's dream.
Thank you for living a real life we all get to watch and wish we were part of.
You are pretty amazing my friend, I wish I had a fraction of your patience and good nature. More power to you.
@Inappropriate RN - That's a stealthy, good natured, hilarious burn. Well done.
@John Snow You know nothing John Snow!
We are part of it. Without us he has no audience. 🥰
@John Smith you shouldn't be giving anyone name advice. 😉
Excellent video, Derek. Love your content.
I love your videos. Yes - I would like to see your motor cycle again. Blessings on you and your family. Philip
First VGG video I’ve seen. I liked and subscribed. You’re knowledgeable, competent, and fun to watch. Much respect.
Another awesome video Derek. I lost my clutch rod once (weak spring) and went back down the road looking for it. All I found was a sturdy stick and I shoved that in its place. Got me home!
Derek: "It's almost impossible to kill a small block Chevy."
Also Derek: "Kills small block Chevy."
@LoneWolf Tech not as easy as a split in half Windsor. At least the 5L.
That's why he said almost.
Derek.... Hold my cold snack and watch this......
Really not that hard to kill SBC tbh
Small block chevy : " I didn't hear no bell "
I absolutely love VGG!!! Best content on TheXvid
Love to see the bike get fixed up, I love the elcamino.
That was so much fun! thanks for the adventure! I had a lot of laughs
I've been watching Derek for coming up on a year. From the start I just liked the man's humor. Fooling with forgotten "junk" kind of speaks to me as I grew tired of all the flashy car make-over shows on cable not to mention the "attitude" builders with more tats than a fleet of salty sailors. I kind of was looking for something to fill in the void after Roadkill went to paid content and I think this is even better actually as far as my tastes go. This El Camino though really deserves a full make-over that I hope Derek will actually document. I've never seen a more perfect piece of rolling art than this fantastic design as I was only familiar with the more seen late sixties El Caminos. Just the wrap-around glass is so cool.
Your Road Trips are So Enjoyable to Watch, I call them "Derek vs Murphy's Law"
In spite of "warning Flames", perseverance, success, home safe to family, more fun than a freight train riding video

Found your channel this weekend and have watched several of your videos now. I’m hooked. Dude you and your one liners has me cracking up. And some of the stuff you do to get it home. That trip in the yellow corvette was just crazy funny as hell but crazy. From pulling out of a field to burnout contest to 700mi to drop it off to the new owner in a snow storm. And then getting the 68 Firebird back home. And now the elcamino.
It’s amazing how good this guy is can literally fix anything such a amazing video funny to.
What a gem of a find. You are amazingly entertaining and damn talented
You are now my new super hero!! That was an amazing trip I wish I had finger nails worth of your knowledge with cars.
I ran into Dereck and his family today. I was thrilled to say hi to him even though it was just a sec. my wife said I should of asked for a photo since I such a big fan but a guy has to respect a guy when he is out with his family unit. Anyways Dereck luv the channel. Thanks man
Your are a awesome guy vice grip . And your comedy is gold man love watching your videos you laugh threw out and also learn a lot as well . Keep up the great videos love them 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Man, the confidence you gotta have in your knowledge in skill to do something like this is unfathomable.
Thank you, you're amazing. I've kept my 78 Pontiac Bonneville 2 door alive over the years (she's my first car and was my daily for years. My love) and you inspire me to revive the living s**t out of her. You bring me to tears often and the funny way you talk on your videos is in my head constantly, "and I'm not kiddin". I'll post pics of my baby on one of your videas in the future. Thanks again, so much love sending back to you for all the love you give.
Glad to see you bringing these cars back on the road
Derek, you’re ability to repair a tired engine with minimal tools, scotch tape and bubble gum is impressive enough. But you take it to 11 by doing so with on hand, as you hold the camera in the other. God bless and much success. Thanks for your wit and humor.
I’m
Thanks Paul
You Sir are the MAN!! I love your positive attitude and your endless sticktoitiveness...or whatever. Close enough!
Another awesome video , I’m learning a lot watching these , I have a 1970 Chevy C10 , hopefully I can get her running & back on the road , Thankyou Derek
Binge watching Vice Grip Garage. My favorite channel.
Amazing video, your ingenuity always blows me away.
Love these longer videos it's like a movie cept one I'm interested in.
My wife put on a movie on Netflix last night. I fell asleep. Watched this whole thing straight through..
That is one cool ute, I love those Old School Muscle Cars. Thanks for sharing the journey from New Zealand 🇳🇿 😀
OMG after watching the entire movie... what a challenge, and what an adventure.. Wow dood you have patience of a saint and skills of a master! Keep on truckin'! The against all odds theme is a nail-biter, makes for quality cinematic viewing, gotsa to love it!
Shades of my life with Chevrolets. I started messing with engines when I was about seven or eight years old (1950 or thereabouts), and really sunk my teeth into Chevy small blocks when they hit the world stage. In watching this video, i am re-living a good part of my time here on this wondrous orb. Thanks for the memories.
Hi Derek, You put out great videos! It's a shame this one had audio-video cueing issues. God bless and take care. Your a fine feller!
One of the best episodes yet! I hope this gets you over 1 MIL subscribers!
@Vice Grip Garage Ranchero came out and 57 El Camino came out in 59 Chevy copied Ford again
@Vice Grip Garage
Hey man, I don't even have my certification for shade tree mechanic, but what a guy might do is make a little wind generator & use the road wind to charge your battery. (Or get a boring auto generator. Whatever)
Found him at 80k subs, took a break, now almost 1M subscribers. Nice! Derek deserves it; awesome channel. Funny and smart mechanic 😄
@Mr Mongo Oil Drinker!
The long episodes rule!
Love the videos dude! Some of the best content of the youtubes
Thanks for stopping by and picking me up. Overall, I think we had a pretty good trip. I had fun anyway. Yeah, some drivers don’t like touching that sticking out levery looking thingy pokin’ out of the tube under the wheel turner.
Your attitude towards life even when it starts dumping on you has given me something to strive for. You truly carry yourself like a man.
We must have very similar taste in cars. Love the Firebird and I always wanted a 59 Cat-eye El Camino. Found one in a junkyard once. Told the guy I would return the next day with a trailer and the cash. Someone beat me there by 20 minutes.
The previous owner’s wife is probably ecstatic that you’re loading up and driving off with all the non-running vehicles she’s been looking at for 12+ years. You’re saving marriages now too.
I love seeing Jessica coming out to welcome you home. I have not seen her ring your neck yet but I have seen her laugh a couple of times.
I look forward oyiPotoiooop oui oui yes I am ooioytu I'muout you too point of up oooo ilu i and you ou i you pouting itunes oupuotooiiuoouuiuououutout out@Big beard 🇺🇸 Ouuuu ooi open ipod touch

Why I'm not married and not looking
That is so cool. Enjoyed watching. It reminded me of growing up in Flint Michigan. Keep it going and thank you sir.
Beat video you have done. Really showed off how well you can pivot and adjust to what those old rides throw at you. I liked the battery bush fix for the generator myself.
Just found this channel, glad I did. You are the Bob Ross of auto mechanics. I could watch this for hours. The subtle humor at the things we all hate. Good tips. The pain of the usual suspects. I was held in suspense for hours.
I'm loving these 700 mile
drives with will it make it
Vehicles. At least you
had cargo room on this
trip.
Well this has to be one of my favourites so far. Loved that it's movie length and kinda has the atmosphere of one too. This is up there with that video of the old buick (was it?) you had owned before and had such nostalgia for.
VGG is basically the most authentic documentary channel ever. Thanks Derek and Jessica. You're making some of the most enjoyable content in the world right now.
Derek (and fam), I'm lucky to be one of your million+ subscribers. I like to leave comments on videos I enjoy or that leave an impression on me. Derek my man... I'm speechless. Keep up the amazing job you're doing... and thank your family for us.
I don't know what it is about this car but I LOVE IT! I would drive the wheels off this thing in a heartbeat!
Derik, this was a great video on basic steps to identify and repair a tired old Chevy 👍🍿🔨… I think an Elcamino is kinda like a Cat/Dog! Lol 😂.. half car half truck 🛻. Thanks for the carburetor rebuild walk thru!
Comme toujours ! J'ai adoré. Merci
I watch a few TheXvid channels. Some channels its kinda tedious to make it through a 20 minute video. But 2 hours with you is time easy spent. Hands down Vice Grip Garage is my favorite channel of all. Thanks for all the work you put into this great channel. Thanks to your family for supporting you in what is obviously a time consuming venture.
You have a great attitude for this dude really loved it
Great stuff love your narration just a wonderful post keep up good work
Just love it. I've done this too. Not to the same amount as you but it's great. Can't say enough good about all your vids. Thanks Derek. Great name 👌
When you pick these up to drive home, do you need to get a temporary permit, or do you just take your chances on the highway? I love this and the 59 El Caminos.
“I did the math, and if we keep up this pace, we’ll be home by Christmas”
Spat out my cold snack to that one!!
Awesome video Derek. Loved the carburetor education piece
Thank you
700 miles! i am realizing i love the open road it just picks me up
I would be interested in watching you bring that bike back around and learn a bit about small engines in the process :)
I’m not mechanically inclined and your channel showed up and I was cracking up on your names for things. I like fixing things just never got into mechanical. Thanks for a wonderful video.
This was a great one!! Love the car. I was nervous just watching. Don't know how you drive some of those cars as far as you do.
I don't think people realize how much editing goes into a 20 minute video, let alone an almost 2 hour video. Thanks for the great content!
A lot
@Pete N I have just begun a TheXvid channel.
@Hetzler Racing Comcast I presume.
I cant imagine how long it takes to download it either. My sub 15 minute videos take like 3-4 hours to download. I need faster internet. LOL
Ffdf
I love El Caminos and you found a treasure in this one!!!
Great stuff i want to get my 77 ford f150 done sometime soon. Watching your channel gives me inspiration 👍🇺🇲💪
I hope to see A teardown of that engine just to get an idea how whipped it really was.
my favorite car you worked on was the 68 buick lesabre but this one brings back memories as well. love the body style on these el caminos
Derek,
You have to call it "Push-Rod" considering you replaced two, and it's got that fancy hot-rod paint and you did end up pushing it!
😁👍
ElPushRodino
Excellent name for the truck. White letters suit its overall theme with the Cragers. Nice job on limping the ol' gal home Derek, have done it a few myself.
Great suggestion! “The Push Rod” is a great name!
Was thinking the same thing
Hey Derek, love your work, don't know if it helps but we'd call that a Ute
I truly hope some day in my life I'll be able to do what you do really makes life seem worth it I appreciate the content that's the prettiest El Camino I've seen sure don't see them much here
AMAZING!! I had my fun with old cars back in the day,,,BUT,,,,,,, for me to ATTEMPT to do what you do on a regular basis with these vehicles, I am sure I would have been on a half dozen different medications at least. GOOD - Luck to you!!!!
Just watched this for the 3rd time since its release. Such great content. Makes me feel like a lucky sob I get to watch this
These revivals just keep getting better! Thank you for two hours of non stop entertainment!
Now that would be a great resto-mod!
I love this episode more for some reason or another. I’ve already had to screen record twice & im only halfway through. 😂 them some gems in this here movin’ pitchers.
Man my first time watching and I can tell you are very smart but also crazy, made me laugh my ass off lol. Loved it 👍👍👍
Subscribed yesterday and been binging your vids. Love the format man!
Welcome to the channel
This is literally the only channel I will watch a 2 hour video on! Thank you Derek and Jessica for making awesome content for us!
Sweet project vehicle!
Using the old terminology, these and Suburban type vehicles weren’t cars or trucks, but “utility” vehicles.
I was kind of hoping that it had the same 348 as my ‘59 Chevy convertible, but it’s all good.
Yip! It is aerodynamic in any direction! Kudos brother.... I have subscribed... liked and all that stuff! You are a master mechanic in my book. Top notch, from Durban, South Africa... well done!
Your words were the key is to how I feel watching you on all these expeditions - Comfortably Numb. Love it! Please keep 'em coming. Also, I'm a raised white outline letter kinda guy. Hard to find nowadays but they ROCKED my '69 Road Runner in 1975.
Great video !! I've been a fan of Wide Oval Redline tires.
