After using the phone for about 3 months I had enough and broke the phone with my own two hands.

This is not true.. because Samsung recalled the phone/device. Than they improved the phone/device and THEN they give it back to the customer.

Ara / modular frame sizes: Smaller frames would obviously have fewer slots (so couldn't hold as many features at a time). Theft could be handled by a way to hotlist stolen modules and sound an alarm if modules go missing without pin code authorization.

No, the bendy iPhone was not overblown. I worked for a company that decided to buy that model for their employees. I think within the first month about everyone had screwed up their phones from putting them in a side pocket or a computer bag. Those things were trash and anyone who defends them in the slightest deserves to have their phone bent in two.

I had an iPhone 6 plus for about 5 years. I actually was curious and tried applying pressure just before the breaking point, and I got to say - it requires A LOT more pressure focused to a point than you actually expect. If you are putting that much strain on your device, how can you not expect for something to go wrong.

For me a fail is demanding custom and horrible software if you want to connect your phone to your PC so you can upload some music or other items to your smartphone.
    iTunes anyone.

the anticipation of Project Ara was truly something else. What a dream that sadly didn't come to pass. Image if it did, modular phones would have taken over. We wouldn't have the note or iphone 11 that we have today, crazy to think.

Great list! The one that saddens me the most is Project Ara. The idea was so innovative, and if someone was to pull it of, it would've been Google. Unfortunately they overengineered the modules and had no real plan to market. IIRC they tried to gauge interest by handing them out of food trucks in Puerto Rico, and then it was shut down.
I still hope that some modular phone standard emerges, just like the PC spec emerged back in the early 90s, so that phones can be built and customized according to your actual needs.

    • dsp4
      dsp4 19 hours ago

@John Francis Doe That's absolutely true. It's a bit harder to pin the modern Android phone design on any company today, but the largest hindrance to a phone standard emerging seems to be the reliance on heavily patented tech from Qualcomm. Hopefully RISC-V will help in that regard.

    • John Francis Doe
John Francis Doe 19 hours ago

dsp4 Actually, most of the PC standard was set with the original 1981 PC that everyone copied. In the 1990s, Intel and Microsoft pushed through some changes that stuck (like the I/O shield hole instead of using spare slots for extra connectors) and some that didn't (like BTX motherboards).
