The Shining rules. But since the sequel is coming soon we did our duty and went looking for sins. Found some. I bet you're surprised.
    Thursday: Holiday sins.

Am the only one that doesn't understand why Shelley Duvall was cast for this movie? She's not that great of an actress to begin with, but I'd forgive the shitty acting if she was at least pleasant to look at, and she's not. Soooo.... she just sucks.

Aside from the helicopter blades caught in the frame, you can also see the ski lift towers in a place that doesn't have any skiing.

14:34 at the beginning of the movie Tony shows Danny "through the mirror" why he doesn't want to go to the hotel, that's why he writes redrum instead of murder.
The power the hotel has over Jack is because him like Danny has some shinning, that's later confirm in doctor sleep

Did anyone mention the amount of cigarette macines in this movie? They are next to each other and then another is 5 feet down the hall You see them when danny is riding around on his quad bike thingy Was there a smoking epidemic at the hotel? If the ghosts of the past don't get you, the cancer defintely will muhaaaaaa :)

So if Jack's talking to Delbert Grady, then who's Charles Grady? His middle name, an alter ego or just an obvious oversight by the writers?

  • Isaac Z-Match

You forgot to include the helicopter's shadow at the right side of the screen in the driving scene. If you watch the whole movie you can see it.

  • Ron Mani
    Ron Mani 6 days ago

okay... again. do you actually WATCH the movies you sin? There are so many things here you call a sin that if you watched the entire movie they make sense. Also, its not fair to call a sin based on the way we do things today as opposed to what was the norm back in the time a movie is set.

    • Ron Mani
      Ron Mani 4 days ago

@Jerry Genes of course there's those... But there are plenty of times where he's just plain wrong in giving a sin. Watch the pulp fiction one...

Okay sooooo most of these sins can go away kf youve read the book. Alot is cut out in the movie, things are left in with no context, because the book has way more detail.

The actresses who played the ghosts of the murdered Grady daughters, Lisa and Louise Burns, are identical twins; however, the characters in the book and film script are merely sisters, not twins. In the film's dialogue, Mr. Ullman says he thinks they were "about eight and ten".

Jeremy sinning the shinning for things that he mostly disagrees with/dislikes vs sinning for discrepancies within the movie itself is a sin.

I read somewhere that the furry bear fellatio it's a reference to Danny being abused by his das, due to the many bear references in Dannys rooms both on the hotel and his Home. But i'm not really sure, just found it an interesting theory

    • Ken Hollis
      Ken Hollis 6 days ago

Eh, that's an interesting theory as far as the movie goes, but the "dog man" scene does happen in the book, and the book makes no reference to stuffed dogs or sexual abuse; quite the contrary, the book makes it clear that Jack loves his son in the healthiest way possible and that his alcoholism was his only problem before arriving at the hotel.

Lucky me; I was working in a movie theater where this was playing on release. The manager told us the book was the scariest thing she'd ever read and got us all worked up to see it. So we all did, and were like, "This?" "The book was scarier," she said weakly.

I think at some point Kubrick's career strategy was to create films that would be lukewarmly received when released, then reassessed later on and discussed forever by film critics/students/laymen aficionados. Which is pretty clever, and just what happened. Back then, people said, "Why would Kubrick make a 'Barry Lyndon' with no erotic life?" "Why would he do a Stephen King adaptation that isn't frightening?" Again, I think because, while the lack of scariness would disappoint contemporary audiences, the absence of that distraction makes it easier for later generations to have a perfectly lovely time analyzing all of those impressive visuals and details for their "meaning"; and in that sense it's actually a plus that they're all disconnected and don't cohere and accumulate in a way that builds even elementary suspense, much less terror.

There are good things in the movie--Shelley Duvall's performance, for example; it was the only thing that made me "feel" the horror of the situation; of course the manuscript scene, a few other tidbits (certainly not the oceans of red-colored corn syrup cascading out of a freaking elevator) But it wasn't and isn't scary. Scary is like funny; it either is or isn't right then; it doesn't become scary or funny years later after talking about it a whole bunch. And despite the impressiveness of all those patented Kubrick touches scattered here and there throughout, it is a fact that "The Shining" fails at the primary job of the genre: if I haven't been clear enough, let me repeat: it isn't scary.

    • Ken Hollis
      Ken Hollis 6 days ago

Apparently they did, because the whole reason King wrote Doctor Sleep was because the most common question fans asked him was, "What ever happened to little Danny Torrance." Personally, I like the book very much, and the movie wasn't bad, either.

  • nickie tee
    nickie tee 14 days ago

I can appreciate sinning based on what is actually IN the film, but, in case you didn't know... a ton of those images make sense based on the book. And it makes it all even creepier. Infamously, Stephen King wasn't too thrilled with Kubrick's interpretation. BUT, I will say that anytime they have tried to remain true to the book the movies were just dumb.
