Every episode makes me more of a fan! Why do I love this show so much??? I think I’m astounded by Spencer’s tenacity, Kenzie’s love of the simple things in life (and knowing their blessings which she highlights in her b-roll), and the trial and error of working with limited knowledge toward a tremendous accomplishment. As always, I’m already looking for the next episode-hopefully Kenz already wrapped up a few while Spencer was gone and we won’t have to wait quite as long for the next one (shame on me for complaining about time between episodes when this family eats out of a barn and showers outside for 3years!!! 🤭)

Those showers Kenze takes late at night. Kids asleep. Time to wash that long hair. In the pitch black darkness. Flashlight for snakes. What I take for granted.

When trying to get cable down a conduit that is already in place, use some string-line and a vacuum cleaner. Place the string-line at one end and use the vacuum cleaner to suck the string-line through until it gets to your end.
You can then use the string-line to pull through cable, or you can attach something else that may be stronger and pull that through.
I have used this technique many times with 100% success.
Just a tip from a tradie down under.

    • Hemi53

@Terence Hood I was going to say the same thing. I've done it many times, easiest way to pull line through existing conduit. Hate that he dug all that up!

was also going to say the same.. i have the green fishing rope in a plastic container and you tie a wad of tissue to the one end and vacuum to the other.. makes for a really fast conduit fish ..

    • John Smith
      John Smith 6 months ago

You are probably correct. I know this is done with larger conduits. I usually work with 20mm and 25mm conduit and do not usually have a problem.

    • Terence Hood
Terence Hood 6 months ago +1

I was going to say about the same thing, the examples I've seen they attached bits of plastic sack to the end to help with the suction of the string end.

With a vacuum suction you can pull a nylon string through the pipe, then pull all your wires through the pipe with the fish string. Make sure to tie a peice of soft foam to the end of the string to pull through the conduit. Good luck and good job.

I try to avoid using a tape when there's conduit available. Blow a sandwich baggie tied to a pull string through with compressed air. That baggie will fly right past those joints. Use plenty of lube when pulling the cable, and always pull more pull string through with the cable.

    • Jamie Whitaker
      Jamie Whitaker 6 months ago

I was going to suggest the same thing but rather than compressed air I use a hoover at the other end to suck the bag through. English Sparky Tips. Works like a dream every time.

A little tip from an Aussie electrician - when you are running your conduit, thread a length of rope through as you are doing it. Much much easier to put that in first than try to thread through your 'fish tape' (or snake as we call it) after the conduit is installed.

    • Luis Fernandez
Luis Fernandez 6 months ago +3

@sir ukin for the ground the pvc is better, as EMT rust really fast when burried on dirt.

    • Luis Fernandez
Luis Fernandez 6 months ago +4

Also for old pipes, you can use a vacuum to pull through a thin rope that is tied to a piece of plastic bag. Just put the vacuum on one end and watch as it feed itself, afterward you can use that thin rope to pull a thicker rope through if the wires are gonna be thick to prevent the thiner rope from breaking. Eadier than digging the whole tube from under ground.

    • sir ukin
      sir ukin 6 months ago

Follow-up: Deburr the EMT conduit, and make every join as tight as possible. Long runs are much harder and riskier otherwise.

Fishtape is meant to be used with a loop at the end, and you always tape over the wires you wrap onto the loop to cover any possible wire sticking up that might catch on something. That way it's always a smooth operation. You also use lubricant where you begin your feed to assist getting past any tight spots. LOTS of lubricant!!

    • Boudreaux504
      Boudreaux504 6 months ago +5

We use 8oz lube per 1000 ft in some cases. That's for tough spots only... But there's nothing worse than easily pulling miles and miles of underground fiber then you hit a spot where the conduit conditions bite you in the ass. Lube it up before digging it up.
They sell lube in 5 gallon buckets and even 55gal drums for those who are more adventurous.

I have been following you all through your journey and am glad to see that there are still people in this country who are not afraid to follow their dreams. Off-grid living is a challenge at the best of times but during the low sun months, it could be more challenging. It might be worthwhile to consider adding a few vertical wind turbines to supplement power during that time of the year and after the sun goes down. They could possibly be mounted on the barn to give maximum height without requiring heavy-duty poles. You can't have too much backup power. By the way, your latest issue with the conduit is one I can definitely identify with. I did the same thing when running a hotline to my shed. Even at 72, we can leave our common sense "in idle" when driving forward to get a job completed. Keep up the good work, you are doing a great job.

Bend the end of the fish tape over into a narrow loop. You will probably need to heat it. The rounded end of the loop will help you over ridges, and gives yo a place to tie the wires onto the tape for the return trip.
When gluing PVC conduit, only apply primer and glue to the MALE end. Any glue in the female (bell) end will end up as a ridge on the inside of the joint.
Limit bends in the conduit. Any bend will make pulling cable harder. When the total bends in a conduit add up to 360 degrees, you will not pull cable through it. Personally, I start thinking about a pull box at 180 degrees, and will always install one at 270.
Digging ditches is hard work. PVC is cheap. Throw an extra conduit or three in the ditch while it is open. in 35 years of copper/fiber work, I have never had to tell a customer that they had too many conduits, that a run had too many pull boxes, or that the conduits were too large.

    • Kevin Crosby
      Kevin Crosby 6 months ago

@Anarchy_Sparky in some jurisdictions, UF is required due to the possibility of the conduit being flooded at some point during its lifetime. This requirement does not exist if individual conductors are used. (I know what you are thinking. just let it lie at "The AHJ is always right" rather than applying logic.)
In the Telecom world it gets even more common, as the NEC has a requirement for shielding and primary protection for any cable with a certain amount of lightning exposure.
The most cost-effective way to install a phone cable with the required shielding is to use standard "Exchange" cable, which shielded, flooded with a waterproofing agent, and rodent-resistant. It is also rated for direct burial, as well as rated for lashing to an aerial messenger cable.
The only downside to Exchange cable is that it is not rated for indoor use. As the NEC requires that Primary Protection be installed "as close as practicable" to the point where the exchange cable enters the building, a transition to indoor cable is usually made at the Protected Terminal.

      wirelesmike73 6 months ago

I love this kind of info shared in the comments. Every bit of it is extremely valuable. I would only add one thing... If you are able (either able to afford the extra cost, or have a big enough conduit to have room for it), always pull a spare wire, or even two if you can. If you ever want to add new equipment, use the spare. If you suffer a short in the wire, use the spare. If your terminals corrode and you trim the wire down to far to be able to work with over time, use the spare. Even if you just want to pull a new or different kind of cable, use the spare. You can never go wrong with pulling a spare line.

    • Anarchy_Sparky
      Anarchy_Sparky 6 months ago +2

@Boudreaux504 taking extra precautions with underground is never bad. In the scenario in this video, it wouldn’t be that big a deal to dig and repair a broken pvc or run a new one but in my world many times that broken pipe ends up being under a building or parking lot.

    • Boudreaux504
      Boudreaux504 6 months ago +1

@Anarchy_Sparky good point about thin jet line cutting the conduit and using stranded cable instead to that thick stuff. It's extra extra precaution, but introduces way too much resistance that isn't needed in an underground conduit.

    • Anarchy_Sparky
      Anarchy_Sparky 6 months ago +2

@Boudreaux504 good point about attaching a line before pulling the wire out but preferably mule tape. I learned the hard way that unless it’s a really short easy pull with minimal bends and/ or oversized conduit, when the jetline pulls tight to the inner radius of the 90’s, it will cut right through the PVC and then you’re screwed! We normally use rigid metal conduit 90’s with female pvc adaptors on either side to change back to pvc to prevent that from happening. I also noticed he pulled UF (underground feeder) cable in the conduit which was unnecessary since UF cable is approved for direct burial. It does look nicer to use PVC and it provides more physical protection for the conductors, but it would have been much easier to pull the wire in or out using individual stranded copper conductors. UF cable has solid copper conductors and with the outer jacket it is pretty rigid and difficult to pull through conduit

Spencer the conduit was an easy mistake to make and it was in the early stages that you installed it, As we say over here "we learn by our mistakes" what you have done is build your own home from 2 tatty looking containers and made them A thing of beauty, Kenzie I think you done marvelously on your own. And i love beau's hair. you are a beautiful family

Hello, I love everything you guys have build together. A little tip you can’t surpass more than 360 degrees in a pipe, you have to add up the 90 degrees and the 45 degrees or any angle you may have in that pipe it cant surpass the 360 rule because if not it would be nearly impossible for you to feed wire through the pipe. Blessings

Spencer, it was truly nice to see that you took a little time to rejuvenate!! You 👏 should be very very proud of yourself McKenzie that you didn't completely freak out about the snake plus You survived the time by yourself and the kids w/o Spencer. I think that the spice rack is amazing 👏 😍!! Looks like 👍 😍 you all had a great time celebrating Halloween 🎃 😀! It is truly ❤ a joy to watch how Beau is growing into a sweet little curly haired big sister! I love how she sticks 😍 ❤ right on Spencer's heels!!! God's Blessings for continued success with your life's journey filled with Adventures 🙏!!!

Friction in conduit increases similarly to friction on a winch. Best practice for conduit is to put pulling junctions between every other 90 degree elbow. Three or more consecutive 90 degree elbows will make pulling wire very difficult. Keep the number of elbows (of any angle) to the bare minimum and, as you found out, point all the bell ends the same direction.

I really loved the spice rack! Many times I’ve been thinking on making one, sadly at 77 years old is kind of difficult to do many things! The desire is there but not the strength!!

You can fish conduit with a shop vac, pull string, and a sponge or something like that. Pro's do it all the time for the first run. It's great for long runs. Than just keep using the pull string or add to it if you need.

Jet line and a baggie scrap and a vacuum.
There was no need to dig that conduit up.

Try making a form of bullet head for your fish tape. Or bend a small loop in the end. May work for pushing through. Also when pulling something out attach a string or rope to the end so your old cable pulls a new line in for future use. Ev3n when cutting into a new conduit you can pick up the line. From where you cut in.

i love you guys, i have been watching your videos since when the place was just bare land. i watched how you both build the place from nothing and how Spencer always manage to get things done/resolved. I used to feel lost/sad when the ending music comes on..
But to be honest, the recent content is no longer exciting/informative/interesting and it feels more like a vlog than anything. whatever, i will still continue to watch and click my likes before i watch any of your videos. hope all these gets better.

Kenz, just some advice from an old timer, avoid any climbing jobs when your left alone with young kids. Even just a badly sprained ankle can be pretty terrifying if you have to suffer it for three days without help! (Just saying) 🥰

  • Edwin de Wit
Edwin de Wit 6 months ago +2

When fish tape doesn't work, use a strong fish line and one of those red and white round plastic floats and suck them through the conduit with a vacuum cleaner. You will be surprised how easy that works. With the fish line you can pull a stronger nylon rope before pulling the cables.

Tools you'll need, string line, walmart bag to tie on the end of the string, dish soap, and a shop vacuum. Run the bag to one end of the pipe but before put some dish soap in the pipe to act as a lubricant, on the other end take the shop vac tape it to the pipe then go to town. Works really good! Good luck

Spencer, I have the same table saw as you and I love the ability to move it around on the wheels and set it up anywhere. One improvement I made was to buy two $50 folding tables with the legs that are height adjustable, I then added extra holes so it is the same height as my table saw. Now I have outfeed and infeed tables for large sheet goods, makes such a huge difference. Just a thought if you struggle like I did. House is coming along great, keep up the great work.

I've been watching you both build from the beginning. This is the the first video of visuals. Bears face outside the window looking in. Kenzes face looking at Spence drive away. Spence looking at Beau has he came home. Beau's curls. Cams cry. Kenze admiring a spice rack. I saw more than building. Love, respect, longing, holiday. A "home" full of human emotions. It is beautiful. 🧡👌🎃
