Dragons Are Flabbergasted By Company's Fat Shaming Business Strategy | Dragons' Den

  • Published on Oct 28, 2019
  • Richard & Lynn Byes, Co-Founders of 'Fat Lad At The Back' enter the Den in hopes of raising £80K investment for a return of 10% of their company. The two entrepreneurs made it clear that the brand's mission was, to have larger cyclists feel comfortable whilst cycling, but our Dragons won't let this one slide...
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

I always wonder, how many of the products on the den actually become even moderately successful? The only one I've ever recognized, noticed or used is Reggae Reggae Sauce. Or maybe it's just me?.

Funny when the dragons talks abut moral, when all they intend is to make money. Nothing wrong whit that, but I hop to god that they send some of those millions to save the children, being morally correct and all.

They're just selling a brand and frankly think it works. It has the potential to ride the wave of anti-PC culture which is definitely coming. Being "televised" investors they have to tow the line for political correctness. However, it being just a brand they're selling, there's no reason other companies couldn't ride the same wave and there are far more succinct ways to form a brand for that purpose.

I'm offended! I'm offended! Good grief, I'm a mamil, I get it and think it's hilarious. And if people are "struggling" with weight. Eat less and move more.

  • Starswept_Dusk
    Starswept_Dusk 20 days ago

This brand was built on the ignorant assumption that overweight men are not emotionally vurnerable. You will find a subset of people that are spurred on by spite from negative reinforcement, but i'd wager most men who are unhappy with their weight would be demotivated by a demoralising slogan like this. Not to mention you are branding him as the person he wants to leave behind, rather than the person he wants to be. Just a poor concept.

It's a good idea in theory but no need to have the name written all over it. A small logo with FLATB on it would be ok.
I've looked at their website, it's ok but very expensive. Womens cycling tops are about £90 upwards.

  • Prince Kael

Some of these dragons don't have a sense of humor. I understand why they won't invest or are unsure about the future of the company, but they act so high and mighty. At least FLAB have been somewhat successful since then and continue to sell to a market of larger cyclists who don't want to be tied up in standard lycra.
