Making a Portable Cart for my Forge

  • Published on Jan 3, 2019
  • Since my garage space is taken up by stuff, Its nice to be able to tuck the forge away when i'm not using it. So I made this cart thing. Works good, and only took about 2 hours.

The propane tank is fine on it's side, just angle the side with the valve upwards so that when the tank begins to empty you don't lose pressure.

Hey Dan, how's it going? Love kickin back and watching a couple of your episodes. Regarding the welding, you've mentioned ways to weld a couple of times, but I would love to see a video about first time (mig) welder tips. Like settings with different metal types and thicknesses. Being a beginner myself, it would help me a lot! I know there are a lot of videos about it, but you have a very easy way of explaining things! Cheers, Steve from Holland

Not sure if this has been mentioned but you can use a piece of scrap steal like mild steel to heat your quench oil. Just get it really hot dunk it in and it will heat the oil while you bring your good piece up to temp.

Hey dan just a quick suggestion I’ve welded for a couple years and when being taught to weld by my instructor I was taught to push wire mig welding bc there is no slag/protective coating and I personally find it easier to lay nice consistent straight beads down just a suggestion though the way your doing it is fine just figured I’d give you a little insight

    • DanMade

Sometimes I push, sometimes I pull. Depends on the angle, comfort, and what I'm doing. For frames and cages and such, I'll push. But for something like a little cart, I won't even bother thinking about it.

  • Glen Everett
Glen Everett 5 months ago +1

Firstly, cool forge! And very cool knife shape!!!!! Re gas bottles on their side....... it all depends if the item using the gas can run off liquid propane. I'm not 100% sure how it all works, but if you have the bottle on it's side, or upside down, you will have propane coming out in a more liquid form then a gas (I'm going on info from some other blacksmiths on TheXvid. Black Bear Forge has spoken about it a few times, I can't remember who else). Most forge burners will die prematurely if liquid gas is put through them, so it's safer to keep the bottles upright.
I would suggest removing the X braising, on the stand, and putting a couple of short cross pieces at the bottom of the legs with a platform running front to back for a gas bottle to sit on. It would also add some stability to the stand due to the weight of the bottle sitting on the bottom instead of hanging from near the top.
I hope this all helps 😊👍👍👍

It's best to not lay fuel tanks on their side for prolonged periods of time due to the gas/fuel is stored under pressure as a liquid.

sounds like a bad quench imo . I would heat up the knife and let it air cool. that let's the grain kind of cool down the way it wants to rather than quenching it which will add more stress on the blade. then heat it back up and quench it when the knife is NOT magnetic. Don't wanna give Justin a knife that's gonna break the first time he uses it. also might want to add something that stops your hand from slipping up the blade and cutting your fingers off.
