The potential of the Eternals is limitless if they didn't congest it in a 2hr film introducing 10 characters with backstory who lived for 7,000 Earth years. A series of this would be thrilling, post movie timeline.

    • King Thor
      King Thor Month ago +1

@Cole Edgecombe Where did you get that info? Odin and Asgard are potentially millions of years old. Not to mention they had ancestors before that. Thor says at the beginning in Ragnarok that Odin killed Surtur half a million years ago, it could've been a joke but they were infact this old in the comics.

I originally thought it WAS a TV series, and was really interested to see how they would handle it.

Tbh the source material isn't that good either. Amazing art and very imaginative but kind of boring to read like a lot of Jack Kirby's post Marvel work.

    • Paul W

@Cole Edgecombe Which just means they've been boring for a longer period of time. The characters are just dull. Stretching this out over a whole series would be painful.

Actually I’d have been fine with a longer movie. I think a series would drag on, not enough action.

The moral dilemma in this film was ridiculous.
Killing existing people for the potential of new people being born in the far future isn't a neutral exchange.
You cause harm by killing someone, you don't cause harm by not birthing someone.

    • ohedd
      ohedd 8 days ago

Really bad take. Harm mitigation isn't the only relevant value. Maximizing the net amount of lives people are happy to enjoy is of value too, is it not? Also, _almost_ the entire reason why killing people is bad is because you're forfeiting a person's potential of living a happy life in the future. So you're already conceding that potential for future life is a good value, only you added the really weird and arbitrary distinction that it only applies to currently living humans. I'm sure you agree that we should have a moral discount rate of zero across _space_ (so people geographically separated from ourselves have equal moral value). I propose we should also have a moral discount rate of zero across _time._
According to your model, working to stop climate change or preventing some future existential threat is completely value neutral provided nobody who is born today is likely to suffer the consequences.

Honestly, Eternals should've been a Disney+ miniseries. It can give enough time to flesh out the characters, and set up more world building.(Looking at the Deviants, ehem). And for those who'll complain about the budget, Loki and Wandavision had phenomenal CGI, and they became hits.

    • puppet23ca
      puppet23ca Month ago

I am inclined to agree over all I liked this movie but I felt a lot of its shortcomings were due to the fact that it had so much material to cover and characters to flesh out in its runtime. Overall though this movie was not bad and I hope Marvel tries to do new things again in the future

    • Kyle Luna
Kyle Luna 2 months ago +1

@Kevy Nova I agree my friend. I just watched Eternals. It was not that bad, just a massive disappointment. But its not the worst MCU film (Thor The Dark World can answer to that). The effects are stunning for a Marvel film. I just wish there was more effort to the story. I think Chloe Zao struggled with the material when handling the characters. Aside from your wish of making it into a TV show, I think James Gunn who did Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Suicide Squad could've done it better because James Gunn was capable of introducing group characters in a cohesive way while telling a well balanced story.

    • Kevy Nova
      Kevy Nova 2 months ago

Totally! I felt there were way too many characters and not enough time spent with them individually to care for them at all. A series would have solved that.

My biggest problem with the plot of the film is that the Eternals say they weren’t to interfere in non-Celestial related affairs even when Thanos was involved, but also say that to make a Celestial you need a certain population of intelligent life on the planet. If anything, doesn’t that mean basically every single Eternal in the universe would get involved considering this guy’s whole plan is to cut the universe population in half?

Kinda like all the OG Avengers.

      @ViciousBane 56
Movies generally have better effects and costumes because they're spreading the resources over less time. Series allow more time to establish characters and setting and they work better for episodic narratives, which this film definitely has.
Both the time and location scale of this film are huge. Each flashback could make a short film and since they spent 3/4 of the movie talking in real-world locations they could have afforded to spread out the budget a little in favor of fleshing out the story.

What’s up with shows, movies are movies and shows are shows. Also movies are way better than shows.

Really looking forward to the next big superhero film. It's called Swirling Mass of CGI Garbage. BTW, recently saw a film called How to Talk to Girls at Parties. It's an alien meets human flik set in 80s UK. They didn't really use a lot of CGI at all. They relied on acting and camera shots. Highly recommended to the vast sea of people who have been CGI mind mugged for the past decade.

My favorite part is where they’re thousands of years old and never learned math. Sersi and Icarus were together for 5000 years between 575 BCE and the present, a ~2500 year period, minus the time they’d been apart recently. Also the were totally on earth for 7000 years from 5000 BCE to 1521 a ~6500 year period.

Also, the "creator" could make perfect beings... and chose to make these beings instead.... for literally no plot-driven reason.

@Robert Monroe come on. Just come on. You know that Eternals is good but your ego isn't allowing you to accept that. You are literally behaving like a flat earther. No matter how much proof you've gotten you'd still refuse to believe.

@Robert Monroe so black widow and Shang chi not breaking records isn't enough of a proof.
It surpassed even Snyder cut in viewership.

    • Robert Monroe
      Robert Monroe 4 months ago

@ALIEN 👾 NWH would even score more D+ viewers if it got released in that platform, so your argument doesn’t hold much merit.

    • Robert Monroe
      Robert Monroe 4 months ago

@ALIEN 👾 Let me enlighten you. All of those movies broke Disney+ viewership records when they came out. Black Widow had the highest D+ views of 2021 till Shang-Chi came out, which broke BW's record. It happens all the time. Also, D+ views doesn’t count when the movie can get easily pirated.

Just because a movie is serious doesn't mean it's a DCEU movie. DCEU doesn't have a particular tone that is maintained throughout the franchise. The only DC thing about Eternals is that it's characters are inspired from the Justice League.
