But do you really think that they could make it off of old die hard fans alone? If the original xcom launched today, it would bomb because the gaming industry and its consumers are so deluded by CoD and other casual time sinkers that very few people would take interest.
Normally I would agree with you on that one, but not in this case. They brought up all the time how it is like the classic, all features are there. Who were they trying to appeal again? Fans of the franchize?, since they are pretty much PC gamers. Or new audience, who don't know or care about the IP, it is a new one for them. People who love the originals got the short stick here.Firaxis did "more accesible" console-version of Civ, kept PC as complex as it is, why not with this serie? :(
Now see thats a damn valid point, the game is a little to linear and controlable and it loses points there, but you have to think that they needed to target a new demographic, it had to be simplified so a new era of Gamers could adapt to its style, Fingers crossed they make a sequel of some sort, they will most likely up the stakes, I just think there is such a thing as being to picky, not many other console strategy based games floating about these days.
I agree that it is great thing to see the return of a classic, but it doesn't mean the game is actually going to be better. Yes, it looks better, but it plays worse, they dumbed down. You have played the original, you have to understand then too what I mean. I have finished the original multiple times, thanks to Dos-Box, last time this year, I have finished the new one once, it is one time linear scripted monotonous broken "enetertainment". You really see it once you start second play-thru...
I agree with you what you said, the way industry is going is bs, big publishers wanna play safe and don't want to take risks, so we get "more casual appealing" and "mainstreamed" stuff, like every game wanting to be CoD. It is not a good thing. But that is exactly why X-Com isn't as good as the classic, the new X-Com is a dumb down from the original, I wanted it to be an upgrade, not "mainstreamed", but that is what we get. So you totally miss understood me, I don't even own single modern-CoD.
It did not go wrong, in this day and age where game devs are to scared to take a step out into adventurous plains and we have call of duty clone after call of duty to clone thrust upon us it's not only refreshing to see a return to a great game series (Which yes I have played the originals too) but to see it looking new and fresh but not harmed in any way or am I under the impression you want an alien skinned call of duty?
Not that many people know X-Com existed? You sir are either way too young, or didn't game back in the days with PC... It is considered one of the best games ever made by many. I'm sure every single one "old" PC gamer knows X-Com, just like they know Syndicate, Master of Orion, Fall Out, Civilization, etc....
I never heard of xcom before they announced that shooter. (this close to pressing satan into a CD format...ugh) I'd say they were aiming for new gamers, PC and console. Not that many people even know Xcom existed, so I am very happy for the game Firaxis made.
I honestly don't think you have actually played the game enough since your praising design, engine, difficulty of this game, which all are flawed. Or you maybe haven't played much of this genre, or the classic. I don't want it to be exact the same, but you would think they would take the classic, and build upon that to make it even better, not dumb it down in every respect.... I really wanted this game to be good, I pre-ordered it, never do that, it's Firaxis, it can't go wrong... Right? -_-
To be honest, I went back playing the original, hell, even UFO:AI, which is free fan made (getting monthly updates) is way better X-Com game than the Firaxis one is. Good point about getting strat-game for consoles, they lack those. But I have to ask you, they made significant changes to the core play due to that desicion to make multiplatform title. Who are they trying to appeal? Old X-Com fans? Who are mainly PC players, or new console players? Exactly. The game was a dissapointment.
Oh you're being one of these people who want everything to be exactly the same, if the design, textures and gameplay annoys you that much then there is a solution to that, go play the original game, it's like £3/$6 on steam. But there is nothing bad about the design of this game, it's engine runs smooth, the difficulty is paced well and its an overall joy to watch your successes and failures. You have to remember aswell we have not had a decent console strat game that isn't typical battle strat.
No, no it didn't. Only area it delivered was the art-style, the aliens and such looked awesome, altought texture quality and such was a bit laughable for a PC game. At first I loved the game, but the more I played it, and at second start at campaign, I realized how freaking badly the game is designed in almost every aspect, when compared to the classic, or just in general. Last time I buy in to hype, even if it is Firaxis...
Xcom is more than a challenge. It's fucking unfair. In the original you can get killed the second you leave your ship from a random grenade by an alien. Have fun.
X-Com is as difficult as they say... Even beginner is no picnic. But there are plenty of spoiler free tutorials on-line that give you an idea to what you'll be getting into. Also, you don't need DosBox to run the original, just have a Steam account and 5 bucks. They have a very stable version of X-COM: UFO Defense you should pick up.
Same here dude I'm also new to it (although I got mine on PS3). XCOM:EU is one damn awesome beast. It may be based on a very old game back in the 90s, but it sure is fun as hell. :D
Just got this game and the original on Steam. I'm a newb but already I'm hooked, I just can't stop thinking about what I should do next for my turns after I shut the game off. Very addicting.
Couldn't steam just cap the preorder percent at 97% or some other inconspicuous number and not give out the prizes since nobody but steam has the statistics on the amount of people who preorder?
The game hasn't released yet and I am already stoked about the idea of a sequel with BOTH land and sea scenarios. Love the idea of increased depth (pun intended)!
I still remember 2 of my favorite soldiers' name. They have been etched in memorial for all the bravery they showed! I'm going to rename them all to my original! Or maybe I should just keep their last names as a tribute to them - they are descendents of heroes!
Didnt get to play the old game but ive already preordered it.Cant wait.In the mean time I have transformers fall of cybertron, and all 3 Mass effect games to keep me busy(all of wich deal with aliens)
So Happy that im going to FINALLY going to have a good strategy game on console . & Hitman 5 my other most wanted game is also strategy ( strategy - stealth / action ) & it comes out at same month so ill be in gamer heaven this Nov
Spoony was in this and nobody is smack talking about the recent 'e-drama' in the comments. My faith in humanity is restored, well in the maturity of the TheXvid gaming community I guess.
oh baby! i cant wait for this game, i loved the old one me and my brothers used to fight for it, we only had 1 computer back then lol... i remember sneaking at night and playing it with no sound hahaha xD
I am so with you on that brother!!! LOL My wife and kids already know: Do not speak to Dad from October 9th until at least October 30th unless it's about XCom!!!
If you love XCOM then you should check out Xenonauts is made by a indie dev an it's the closest that you will get to XCOM and you can play the demo now
Did you hear they're going to add a "BETRAYAL!" Achievemnt to the game thanks to Spoony? ROFLCOPTR! XD I wonder what it is, destroying a unit taken over via mind control or Chrysalid infection or using a psyker to take over an enemy unit and having it destroy it's former allies? XD
Ty for showing me. Now I can remember why I didn't go back to that vid after I saw it the first time-the reporters are f'n idiots. -_-' Still, thank you tho, they're idocy is obviously not your fault of course. XS
May someone plz link me to the vid that has Sid Meier as a Psyker and/or the interview where they called the Base a "G.I. Joe Playset your neighbor had but you didn't." plz? X(
They're still (I would imagine) friends before co-workers at this point, considering how long each of them had been working for the same site. Spoony will probably get to next years E3, seeing that E3 videos are great for getting views. They'll see each other and probably do something for the fans. It's not like Spoony is Ron Burgundy seeing his news team after being disgraced on the air.
Did Jake seriously just say that the PC version will have a UI tailored for PC and not just a port of the crappy console UI like every other game in the last three years? These guys are going to be my personal heroes if they pull this game off.
What's great about these two(Joe & Noah) is that they know the ins and outs of the series. Not like other guys on bigger gaming sites like Gamespot, Gametrailers, and IGN who look like they are experiencing the series for the first time and am only drawing questions from their experiences as a general gamer (as opposed to a gamer who grew up playing X-COM).
the same they said about duke nukem before and it was the worst trash EVER! but i hope it will be awesome.... at least ONCE after all these fail tryouts before with the other xcom games.
21:45 Hope it'll be "Terror From The Deep" but next time around they'll still allow missions on land as well as underwater and both aerial and underwater interceptions. I know it'd make things a bit more complex at first, but once you unlock like uber-spacesuits and saucers and the like, you'd probably be able to travel wherever you wanted to. XP
Yeah, still disappointed in the small squad size and only one base though. Good news is the game is supposed to be moddable, so I'm hoping some fans will come out w/ some good mods early on increasing squad size cap and multiple base construction.
Well if you're intrested of the XCOM universe, then you shoud know that the game doesen't have absolutely anything to do with it. I'd give this game at least a try because of how they are making this game as acessable to new players as possible. Besides its not RTS, its turn based tactics so it's not going to be nearly as fast paced and confusing as RTS.
Eh, I'll miss it a bit, only because it looked genuinely interesting. If it hadn't had the X-Com name tacked on, I probably would have cared a bit more.
The guys developing this one are not the same guys who were developing the FPS. You may also like to know that the FPS is in developer hell at the moment and has been postponed until 2013-2014.
BETRAYAL
Little did Joe (and the rest of us) know, is that the "base invasions" he was so curious about is what ultimately makes XCOM 2 happen.
Oh god, Bradford, what's wrong with you? You're face, your voice!
The voice trailer sounds like Jon Bailey from Honest Trailers jajaja.......wait, Is it him? O.o
+Ignacio Herrera (iherrerac) www.imdb.com/name/nm3929163/
How long has he had that foooookin jacket?!
But do you really think that they could make it off of old die hard fans alone? If the original xcom launched today, it would bomb because the gaming industry and its consumers are so deluded by CoD and other casual time sinkers that very few people would take interest.
Old comment, but it is kinda funny that they didn't include time-units at all to this game...^^
Normally I would agree with you on that one, but not in this case. They brought up all the time how it is like the classic, all features are there. Who were they trying to appeal again? I'm so happy this is free on PS Plus next week! I never knew a good RTS game was on the consoles.

Last time I buy in to hype, even if it is Firaxis...
Excuse me!!!!!!!!
XCOM Enemy Unknown delivered on all fronts!
You crazy!
Too bad they couldn't deliver the game everybody expected...
That's why you throw a smoke grenade before you exit. It's not unfair, it just seems that way compared to the casual games of today.
Awesome interview
renewed xcom, check. Now we need a renewed transport tycoon.
You think steam is that evil? Also its hit 100%
i love x-com
Shut up and use your credit card! ;)
I think Jake stole Spoony's "you have to throw flaaares" joke in a later interview when he refered to how "hipster" the original XCom was.
Does anyone know what angry joes actual job is/was?
1:25 spoony orgasm
Get demo now!
Couldn't steam just cap the preorder percent at 97% or some other inconspicuous number and not give out the prizes since nobody but steam has the statistics on the amount of people who preorder?
Youarnt guaranteed Civ 5 unless preorder reaches the 3rd goal
BETRAYALLLLL
damn you this video made me buy from steam.... and get a free civ 5 yea!
This interview is just so good... I'm glad I found it.
Downloading now, I'm so hyped xD
XCOM DEMO OUT!
I can only hope Firaxis is reading this. :(
The game hasn't released yet and I am already stoked about the idea of a sequel with BOTH land and sea scenarios.
You could also just pick up the original. It's dirt cheap on steam and is still an absolute blast.
can't wait to play this game.
Didnt get to play the old game but ive already preordered it.Cant wait.In the mean time I have transformers fall of cybertron, and all 3 Mass effect games to keep me busy(all of wich deal with aliens)
I have never played X-COM but i might pick this up
can't wait to play this game.
review dark souls please!
there is multiplayer
That would be the other XCOM game, aka the FPS. Enemy Unknown is already slated for October release.
So Happy that im going to FINALLY going to have a good strategy game on console .
& Hitman 5 my other most wanted game is also strategy ( strategy - stealth / action ) & it comes out at same month so ill be in gamer heaven this Nov
As someone who isn't a hardcore strategy fan X-Com looks intriguing. It's cool that spoony and angry joe are supporting each others content.
Spoony was in this and nobody is smack talking about the recent 'e-drama' in the comments. My faith in humanity is restored, well in the maturity of the TheXvid gaming community I guess.
*sigh* You have to PRIME the money first!
And make sure you have enough TIME UNITS too.
Noob.
oh baby! i cant wait for this game, i loved the old one me and my brothers used to fight for it, we only had 1 computer back then lol... i remember sneaking at night and playing it with no sound hahaha xD
i'm throwing money at the screen but nothing happening!!
YES! new XCOM! When? Want it!
I am so with you on that brother!!! LOL
My wife and kids already know: Do not speak to Dad from October 9th until at least October 30th unless it's about XCom!!!
Blaster Launcher?
If you love XCOM then you should check out Xenonauts is made by a indie dev an it's the closest that you will get to XCOM and you can play the demo now
Haha! It's awesome to see someone so excited about a game. I hope that game is everything you want it to be and more, Joe. =D
I like how the creator knows Dwarf Fortress.
Subbed!
I hope you can blow up gas stations. XD
XD
23:33 the stuff boners are made of :)
What's with the multiplayer questions? Multiplayer in a turn based game like this would be borderline terrible wouldn't it?
Ty for showing me. Now I can remember why I didn't go back to that vid after I saw it the first time-the reporters are f'n idiots. -_-' Still, thank you tho, they're idocy is obviously not your fault of course. XS
TY.
Look in this video:(I cant copy the link)
XCOM Enemy Unknown E3 2012 Gameplay Demo - IGN Live
May someone plz link me to the vid that has Sid Meier as a Psyker and/or the interview where they called the Base a "G.I. Joe Playset your neighbor had but you didn't." plz? X(

Kinda hard watching this now, knowing Joe and Spoony will probably never do another joint project ever again, due to Spoony being fired from TGWTG.
Aww nervous Joe :D
What's great about these two(Joe & Noah) is that they know the ins and outs of the series. Not like other guys on bigger gaming sites like Gamespot, Gametrailers, and IGN who look like they are experiencing the series for the first time and am only drawing questions from their experiences as a general gamer (as opposed to a gamer who grew up playing X-COM).
Hey joe could you do a lets play of the original X-com or some of the sequels?
the same they said about duke nukem before and it was the worst trash EVER! but i hope it will be awesome.... at least ONCE after all these fail tryouts before with the other xcom games.
LOYALLLTY
21:45 Hope it'll be "Terror From The Deep" but next time around they'll still allow missions on land as well as underwater and both aerial and underwater interceptions. 13:45 I used to be a merc for X-Com, then I took a Plasma Bolt to the knee. X-S
12:14 I want to see Dr. Insano as a Scientist in the Lab/Containment Sections and/or as a Psyker. XD
Yeah, still disappointed in the small squad size and only one base though. Good news is the game is supposed to be moddable, so I'm hoping some fans will come out w/ some good mods early on increasing squad size cap and multiple base construction.
Yeah, that's kinda of an oops. Still, it'd be a good place for a base tho. It's in both Africa and the Mideast and is next to Europe.
custom comp
need bigga couch
Egypt is in Africa 8-)
What is the melodic death metal song at the end of every video joe does, i'v been wanting to know forever!
it does look very cool so i might give it a try

Besides its not RTS, its turn based tactics so it's not going to be nearly as fast paced and confusing as RTS.
according to pc gamer, this game is delayed at least until 2014. They fucked this game up
Oh thank God, I do not need a perfectly good game ruined because it was turned into an FPS cause there's a mad market for it.
So they are finally sticking true to the franchise and not turning it into a stupid FPS just cause there a crazed market for it? LOYALTY! REDEMPTION!
These guys are just epic man. All of them. XCOM FOR LIFE!!!!
the best tbs game of all times and one of the best games in the history
