The ultimate sales person. There's something extremely intriguing about him but also something very disturbing and creepy. I wonder with these talented sales people if they're ever truly themselves. I'd like to see how they act with their friends, wives, husbands or parents. I get the feeling that they're always putting on an act. Maybe they're all sociopaths/psychopaths?🤔

@natallia f I don't think he means "the best part of life is the action of selling." Nearly every human interaction is a sale of some type. Ever talked a girl out of her panties?

    • steven manwaring
steven manwaring 4 months ago +1

@natallia f I wonder if you have ever said a white lie to a girl or guy to make yourself seem better or more attractive or if you have ever dressed up to try to impress people or if you ever cleaned your place before having specific company over or ever pretended to like something that you don't like so you can fit it. Those are all examples of selling. What you are selling is an idea of yourself. Now that's a few examples on the fundamental level of how we are always practicing some form of non tangible sales. But on top of that. Every single thing you own was sold at least once. Every job on earth that pays you money is for the benefit of someone selling something. Or even just directly selling. News outlets report on the same thing but twist it so much it could make you believe something completely different. Because they are selling an idea. There are numerous studies on this concept that are pretty easily accessible, and the fact that you are willing to so easily dismiss that idea shows that you are the one lacking experience, or atleast lacking the ability to understand there is a process to which is fundamental to forming an opinion that has a basis in reality. I personally find value in a lot of things Tony Robbins teaches and does, but I'm not under any illusion that he is perfect by any stretch of the word, but I can say one thing. It is demonstrably true that he has been a net positive to the world and I would love for you to prove me wrong. If you can, but I have the feeling that you are the type of person who in the search of information will ask questions in such a way that could only reaffirm what you want to believe, but I hope I am wrong. Anyway there's my long and pointless TheXvid comment for the day lol. Have a good one.

This is typical selling. Framing questions, clarifying objections (you mean you don't have a tape player?) and then isolating (are you just saying that, or do you mean it?) and then closing "well, here is a tape player for you". Tony is doing the same psychology of the sale today, just doing it in a less of a "gotcha" way. Smoother. Over the years sales has evolved from boxing people in to building value and then taking it away. I had a waiter one time tell me I probably couldn't tell the difference between a 30 dollar steak and their 70 dollar steak. Challenge accepted. Wife order the 30 dollar one and I ordered the 70 dollar one. I showed him! Yes, there was a difference but not 40 dollars worth. But hey, he wasn't going to tell me what I should or should not order. I got sold.

    • Jeffrey Carfagna
Jeffrey Carfagna  6 months ago +9

He even states then the approach turned him off, It's a trap basically. What I do love is the questions and layering on the value, and test closing that is demonstrated!

    • Rex Lundström
Rex Lundström 4 months ago +1

To smirk at “only” closing 1/3 people, you have likely never been in sales. A $1000 sale from a cold phone call and a single visit is insanity.

Just think about that happening to you, it probably feels impossible that someone who didn’t know you could reach out to you and persuade you to spend that much on any product or service (ESPECIALLY if that product or service wasn’t solving a very specific need of yours).

People who are a lot like you and me splurged on this after his sales pitch. The desire to be perceived as consistent is very powerful and can get the better of many people as Robbins pointed out.

I think he addresses this part way through where explicitly explains that he's telling this story to demonstrate the power of the closing. He calls out how he wouldn't any longer do this as it doesn't align with his integrity. He also states that he's highlighting it so that viewers are aware of the power of such techniques and it reduces their chances of being taken advantage of.

Goes to show you he's never not been who he is. He wanted to be this person since he was a teenager and was working towards it from the beginning. Adult behavior change is very difficult. If you're past your mid 30s: embrace who you are, who you've always been and stop trying to be something you've never been and probably will never become. It's okay to not be a superstar. Just learn what you need to to earn a living and do your best to be content with the simple pleasures that life has to offer. You can and learn and grow and achieve, too, but don't stake your happiness on it. And don't underestimate the value of who you are right now.

I get annoyed with the door to door guys, though not personally - they're just trying to make a living like everyone else.

Where I live it's typically the electricity or internet companies doing it these days (not the US, we actually have competition in that space)...

I actually signed up with an internet door to door one time - I couldn't put my finger on why I gave the guy time to even go into detail, but it might have been that he understood the product he was selling. And as it turned out, it was a damn sight better internet than I had prior (more reliable, faster).
Sadly although we do have competition in the field, there are a lot of mergers, so after 18months of good internet they got bought and almost overnight the reliability and speed went to poo.
