wrong, z77 with 3rd series intel has pci-e 3.0 not 2.0. on 1 of them im running m.2 samsung 970 with full pci-e 3.0x 4 in full speed with gpu on pci-e 3.0. z77 gives you everything like others except ddr4. gpu, m.2, overclocking so its everuthing what you need. only maniacs need more.

Intel had 1THz, 1000GHz in 2001 to be sold by 2005, so why did it disappear when it had 10,000 times less leakage and lower power ? And Motorola and DARPA have had 1THz chips too since 2009 and 2011 !

  • Arturo Ramirez Perez

Funny... I was just talking to a friend who works at Intel. He told me that their gaming market was barely 2% of their total sales. He agreed that if it was for gaming, go for AMD (CPU, motherboard, etc...). For server you can't go wrong with a Broadwell E or W, or the new Skylake.
But I think there's fine line between server and workstation, specially on audio workstations.
In audio workstations you can't just throw more or better GPUs, because it simply doesn't work with GPUs. So what do you for multitasking on an audio workstation? Raw power! A multitasking CPU and lots of RAM.
But when is enough, enough? I have a Broadwell E-2699 v4 (22 cores, 55 MB of cache) and 32 GB of RAM. In the task manager the CPU workload rarely goes above 12%, RAM goes up to 25-30%. But obviously I still haven't used it to it's full extent. So I can safely say that it's way more than enough.
But the whole PC it's new, and I'm still learning how to work the DAWs and plugins. So I don't think the CPU and RAM will stay in that workload during the next 6 to 12 months.
So what I'm trying to say is that Xeons may still be valuable, if not essential, for certain types of multitasking workstations.

Intel is so big they don’t need to listen to consumers or review channels like this. AMD on the other hand seems to have their ears wide open on these matters and I hope they continue to bring better performance per dollar and keep pushing the market to innovate. Gotta love the free market.

It works, even though Intel claims that those processors don't support ECC memory. It seems to me that at some point Intel decided not to market these CPUs as supporting ECC so as not to disrupt the sales of Xeon processors.

    @ Linus Tech Tips
I LOVE your vids & really like the way you do ads(for which I generally have a deep dark fiery passion of loathing). HOWEVER, my very recent experience with Ting, for whom you've a plug in this video, has taught me that the whole "pay ONLY for what you use" thing is deceptive BullS***. You pay for the TIER under which your use falls & only get proper value for your money if you've used just under the entire tier's allotment(like using 98-100 texts/pay period). I paid 3$ for 12 texts and $3 for 2.88 MEGAbytes of data before porting my # back to AT&T. Dafuq is this bilge about "pay ONLY for what you use"???
Also, their "coverage" map is HORRIBLY designed and makes it look like the coverage they provide in my area is comparable to what I was used to . BUT, it barely existed OUTSIDE!... let alone when in a bedroom/office. OH YES, IF you look much closer than the average person, & get a GOOD handle on the map's "legend", you MAY decipher the actual expected connectivity IF you guess the correct network. I was told by their customer support that part of the issue I was having with connectivity was due to the fact that my phone's made for the GSM network, not the CDMA network, which they said would've been "great". They say they're working on making it clearer, but my experience with such companies tells me that that's just more 'theater' to satisfy an irate customer.
Needless to say, in light of these failures, I canNOT recommend ting as a legitimate service provider.

With regard to the sponsor Thursday Boots - I personally own three pairs of them: Two captain boots and one pair of loafers. All of their models are Goodyear welted meaning that they can be re-soled once the outsole begins to wear thin - meaning you can keep the same shoes for decades. If anyone is into getting value for their money in terms of getting a good quality long lasting shoe or boot I highly recommend giving them a look. To put it into perspective the Dainite-like rubber sole on my original pair of Thursday boots has lasted me 2 years of near constant wear and have been through Europe, Asia and lasted through Canadian winters and it looks like the sole has 2 more years left (heel needs replacing soon). Also I'm not a fanboy of the sponsor - I also own Goodyear welted shoes from Meermin and Beckett Simonon.

I've held off building a PC for years now... I have nothing against Intel, but until AMD came out with the Ryzen lineup I just never felt like the time was right for a major investment in desktop hardware (I've had a series of laptops over the past 5-10 years that were really placeholders)

Now, I'm super excited to be building a PC on the AM4 platform for my girlfriend (a graphic designer and photographer) and myself (a programmer). Having just built one such system, I'm already planning on rotating out my gf's CPU (the 2200G, really a placeholder since I bought everything at once as a Christmas gift) for the 2700x, and building myself a little workstation on the side.

AMD is a cheap alternative if you want to keep the equipment for 2 years. But Intel on the long time becomes the cheaper solution. Because you can start with an i3 or a G and over 2 - 3 years, when the technology depreciates financially, to take an used i5 and afther another two or three years to take an i7 for the same motherboard. Beacause an i7 maked 6 years ago is faster then majority of ryzen models.

The professional market is a funny thing. AMD's winning out against Intel for cost-effective CPU's, but Nvidia is utterly butchering AMD in the GPU scene, simply because many developers are sticking to CUDA because "it's easier to work with." As a result, Nvidia has been enjoying jacked prices, much like Intel used to be doing. We'll see where it goes.
