Amazing tactile feel. Distinct mechanical acoustics. Unparalleled durability. The IBM Model M is likely the most influential keyboard ever- even if it’s NOT great for gaming. But how does a brand new Unicomp Classic compare?

i mean they aren't erroneously called mechanical, mechanical is a flawed term and topre switches have the same argument whether they are mechanical or membrane. Also you said a more versatile cherry mx or an original model m, dude that's dumb. You can get much nicer switches than cherry mx and debatably even the model m for cheaper. If you even wanted and more vintage experience just get an old alps boards which are godly in typing feel. Why has this channel never covered anything but rubber domes and cherry switches??????/

The 10-keys / number pad is in the wrong place... it should be on the left side. That was it's far more ergonomic. Also, you can type just as fast with the number pad either left or right, regardless if you are right or left handed.

I have a couple of Unicomp's and a couple of original model M that I have bolt modded.
Unicomp's are not bad but the original model M's are just sharper, bolt modding makes all the difference.
You should pay no more for a working model M than a new Unicomp but you also have the hassle of bolt modding which takes 1-2 hours.

Mr. Tech Tips presentation has an unflattering know-it-all vibe plus commercials. I have a few dozen of these keyboards that I snatched from junked IBM PS/2 computers around 25 years ago. I write software and can't work using other keyboards, so I put them on every one of my computers. If I change from newer non-clicking to the older clicking kind I like it better. But if I change from clicking to non-clicking, I like it better too. They are great keyboards that are easy to clean and restore to new condition, but on some of my non-clicking models the insulation on the cord has dried and rotted. I got a cable for one of my clicking keyboards which has a USB end instead of the small circle and DIN connectors, but it got tugged and broke.

I have an IBM Model M dating from 1986 UK layout. I now work in the legal industry (Immigration), but when I was working with the IT industry (I've worked as a consultant on legal compliance in IT systems ... it's all the same to me) people when I arrived at a new site on my first day would always look at me a little strangely when I arrived, and unplugged whatever junk the office had to type on, and plugged in my keyboard. I also own some unicomp keyboards as well, just in case...

That's my favorite keyboard as well. I always tell people that the IBM PS-2 keyboard was "built like a brick s**t house"" (intended in a complimentary way, of course!), and I actively pick them up whenever I come across them (I work in recycling)...
I like the fact that they don't slide around on the desk as much too!

  • Consciousness Vivid

I remember both, the model F and model M keyboards.. during the mid 80s. We were using XT machines back then, and drifted to AT machines. Those keyboards were sturdy, and you could hardly make a typing mistake - I was 6 or 7 and was practicing touch-typing on them with my small hands. Pacman was our staple game on the pcs (and yes, since you don't need to double-tap a key in that game, you won't have that slow double-tap issue Linus points out in the video.) Tetris and 3d Tetris was our competitive scene as a family but I was never really good at it. Now I know why.
