Amazing tactile feel. Distinct mechanical acoustics. Unparalleled durability. The IBM Model M is likely the most influential keyboard ever- even if it’s NOT great for gaming. But how does a brand new Unicomp Classic compare?

We owe so many small, quality of life or even life changing things to various R&D teams of different products and designs who had the foresight and sense to do things the way they did. We could be living in a dystopia where we all have space cadet keyboards.

I had an IBM terminal keyboard that had a "thunk" that would make a pop sound every time you pressed a key. Or, you could turn it off with like a caps lock key in the lower left hand corner. The electronic thunk was so cool but very annoying by the end of the day. I have never seen it since but it was on an IBM green letters on black background COBOL coding monitor.

I still use this keyboard today with a ps/2 to USB Adapter. Got it in the early 90s when someone gave me a 1989 IBM PS/2 model 70. Well the sticker on the bottom of the keyboard says 1989 anyway.
It’s the only keyboard I have ever had that feels so good to type on and like he said, they are tough as hell and sound great. Every other keyboard I have had either keys get stuck, become non responsive or the lettering wears off. Just needs a windows key.
30 years of use and still going should say something about its build quality.

I still don't get how anyone could make a video detailing the history and feel of the Model M and still talk about it as if Cherry MX was in anyway its equal. Cherry MX are overpriced, plasticky, scratchy (in the case of red and blacks, at least until 2017), and rattly (in the case of blues) switches that don't hold a candle to the clean and elegant simplicity of buckling springs. Yes, modern mechanical keyboards hav n-key rollover (except Razer, for some reason) and reduced hysteresis (actuation-to-reset point difference), but by the time this video was made, Cherry MX in particular was already well overshadowed among enthusiasts because Chinese clone manufacturers were already either making better quality clones (Gateron) or innovating new and better switch designs (Kailh BOX). These Chinese companies actually listen to community feedback and collaborate with specialty websites to make ever more new switch variants to fit everyone's needs. Even Outemu, who took Kailh's place as the cheap MX clone that every budget brand uses these days, implemented innovations like hot-swappable switches. And don't even try to pretend as if Cherry MX keyboards don't break. They are overrated AF and they use that as an excuse to be sluggish in keeping up with their competitors.

Still say the Logitech G710+ is the modern day Model M. Best keyboard on the market for both typing and gaming

    • Darksyne
      Darksyne 29 days ago

+Jordan Walker Corsair's used to make decent keyboards but yeah lately they've cheapened out on manufacturing, same with Razer. Shame how the mighty have fallen. You can't go wrong with Logitech but I don't like the feel of Romer G switches for typing. I miss my old Model M, wish it didn't get thrown out with my old IBM PC but oh well.

    • Darksyne
      Darksyne 29 days ago +1

+Jordan Walker Old Model M's from the 80's and 90s definitely have better typing feel but are still not as good as the even older model F's which were more expensive to produce. It's like modern Cars, while older ones were built with higher quality materials made in the USA they still had bugs and flaws and a lack of features (model M's don't even have windows keys). The old model m felt solid but was insanely fragile for something as bulky and heavy since the thick metal brace inside was only held in by plastic rivets which are prone to snapping off and since being a membrane keyboard it only has 2 key roll over and is very sensitive to spills which can brick the entire board.

Modern keyboards have made fantastic innovations with all the different styles of switches and while not being as satisfying to type as the old IBM boards, they are still eon's superior than the mass amounts of membrane boards that took over the market in the late 90s and 2000s. All the different types of switches made keyboards so diverse and interesting from both a typing and gaming perspective. The Cherry MX Browns that are in my G710+ are so perfect for everyday use for gaming and typing and the keyboard itself is packed with features (apart from RGB lighting which is a more childish gimmick anyway) and pretty decent build quality for something made in China. While it can't replace the typing feel my old Model M gave me which left such an impression on me as a kid as to how a keyboard should feel, the G710+ and cherry brown switches are definitely a worthy replacement.

    • go on
      go on Month ago +2

I believe 2KRO doesn't necessarily mean that a keyboard can *ONLY* press two keys at once. Often it is more than that, and I am 99% sure that the Model M can do Ctrl+Alt+Del and other such combinations. The 2KRO has to do with certain unique key combinations. For daily use (wouldn't recommend gaming) you should be fine, but I would do some independent research just in case. Or you can always get the even greater Model F with full NKRO :)

ok so im really glad i have my m keyboard from 84 however a move a couple of years back forced me to dispose over 40 of the others. now in 2019 in retrospect i could cry to think of the loss of such quality devices.much can be said of the machines that had accompanied them as well. i suppose this is why they are coveted items now.

The build quality isn't quite up to scratch with the original models from what I have seen. Not a problem with Unicomp but rather the tooling they use for manufacturing, as it is quite old now. Still a great keyboard of course, I would take any of them over a modern Cherry keyboard.
