How the world learned to say LGBT | Fahad Saeed | TEDxCopenhagen

  • Why does it make sense to use complicated acronyms, symbols and words to describe who we are as people? If we are all merely human beings, why does the LGBT-community insist on using complicated pronouns and acronyms that sets them apart? In this TedxTalk, activist and diversity trainer, Fahad Saeed, will explain why it makes sense to use inclusive language, why minority rights should concern the heterosexual majority and how words that can seem complex, can help set you free as well. Fahad Saeed is an expert on diversity and inclusion. 13 years ago he co/founded Denmarks only organization for ethnic minority LGBT/persons. In his daily life, he works as a communications consultant. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Hello Ted talks. when do you come to south africa. i am an indian and have lots of topics that we as a community and individuals can speak on and share. when the world thinks of indian they think of Indians from India, but South africa has the second largest community of Indians born and raised in South Africa with our own lifestyles and issues. amazingly not quite similiar to India Indians

I am sure we are all here (on this planet) because of the transgenders and gays! Isn't it...!?
When you know in detail the biological (and genetic) reasons why this things happen (yeah, just happen...), you just laugh at yourself and then simply shut your mouth; till then, you will still think that you are some kind of different species, a special one...

@Aaron Rosenberg My proposal was formal.... Everything will stay here, for everyone which is beyond animal barrier, so they can understand.

@Dominik Rodriguez Do they? Or is an opinion a sum of a life experience separate to yours? Everyone experiences this planet differently. Martin Luther called out BS but in a far more eloquent way, so did Gandhi. Right now you sit more on the fascist side of rhetoric which would be forcing a belief change through aggression. So perhaps one line answers which don't say anything at all, as you put it, "whole lotta nothing" is what you are actually sending out... One sentence, to express what? Nothing.

@Dominik Rodriguez You don't know what contradiction is clearly. But looking at all your other comments throughout history you just go around looking for conflict where there isn't any. Some would argue that your actions themselves are contradictory. I take it you seem to seek to change everyone around you but use arguing to do it. Sort of a war for eventual peace ethos. Seems contradictory...

People see categories as boxes that restrain you. I see them as pixels. Sure, you can do a human model with a few pixels... but to represent a real person, you’ll have to use a lot of them. And maybe there are boxes or categories etc... that only represent you partially. Maybe you only partly belong to the views people have of that category, and that’s okay. Those pixels help have a quick understanding of you... but no categories can ever truly replace getting to know a person, and that takes time, and work to repel prejudices. Categories, if they are numerous enough and leave room for self definition, help make a more rounded human being than neglecting them altogether

You're just another all-high-and-mighty atheist throwing around accusations of people being lazy, while in fact you are the one who is lazy.
I never insisted that you should believe in the One and Only Deity. I simply commented on the simple-minded comment you made earlier, since you atheists insist on bashing theists on the net hiding behind your keyboards.
By "work" I assume you mean research. Otherwise for me the Qur'an is enough. As for research, if you'd be a bit more than lazy, you'd find research proving the existence of GOD (e.g. by Michio Kaku), but there is no research that proves the opposite. Either way, to rely purely on research to form your perception of reality is nothing short of lazyness. Are you a researcher yourself might I ask? It sure does not seem so. Do you know what research entails and how many flaws are included in each research study conducted? You're leaning on a shifting wall. Research keeps being contradicted by new research, since research is ultimately based on assumptions that we with our simple and limited minds try to prove. Minds that can't fully grasp the complexity of reality. So again, Mr Caveman, I suggest you open your mind a bit to the possibility of something existing that we are yet to see.

    • Aaron Rosenberg
      Aaron Rosenberg 2 months ago

@al-Haifawi But you _did_ discuss this further, didn't you, rather than simply stop your god-babble.

It seems extremely important for many theists such as yourself to insist that others worship your deity-of-choice. Your error is always talking about your deity as if any work has ever been accomplished to show its existence. That work remains for you. Don't pretend it doesn't. Any assertions made are therefore lazy, and belie an indoctrinated mind.

This seems so disingenuous. The plurality who hold these contrary views feel like ‘human’ include all these identities. We are asking you to come together and join with us as ‘human’. Not to separate into groups under these identities.

Megan Mueller I certainly do not disagree with your assessment of our current situation. There is a problem with addressing individuals needs. Especially when an individuals needs require something from the collective. My main issue here is that I disagree with the solution presented in this video. We are assuming that these minority groups won’t reinforce the same ‘majority suppressing minority’ dynamics within these smaller groups. As a member of numerous identities I often feel like I am not represented at all in ALL this identities that I am supposed to benefit from. We need to start looking at the individuals in my opinion. No group in a monolith. These segregation’s alien people 🎟

Creamiie26 to the people who don’t have problems, when people gather in groups and voice their needs, the overwhelming tendency of the majority is to dismiss them, because the problems are invisible to the majority. So, what looks like useless categorization and false needs to the majority is incredibly important changes for those organizing and voicing those needs. Again, the majority will very often see the minority as focusing on things that don’t matter, because they don’t matter to a majority voice. They’re invisible to them.

Also again. I am not against people coming together. Especially with regards to brining about change. My whole is issue is with regards to divisions for the sake of division with no change in mind with no problem to solve.

    • Creamiie26
      Creamiie26 2 months ago

Shawn Tomac it is a human condition to push back against change. And it is equally a human condition to fight for change. I don’t want you to miss understand me. I believe in the individual. It was an individual who saw a problem. Who gathered a group of people and brought it to the collective for a solution for change. In your example I don’t feel like you stress enough how it was the wider support of other individuals who do not identify with ‘a need to use a wheel chair’ who supported individuals who did. I also want to point out that change is hard and painful and expensive but as humans we have not shyed away from it. those ramps were brought into reality by individuals of varying identities and they are also benefiting individuals with varying identities: individuals with various mobility concerns, individuals who push stroller ... so to answer your question. To bring about change all we need is a willing human.

Stop trying to cram LGBT down the public’s throat. If LGBT is your community that’s great. No one cares, but people are starting to resent the community as they are trying to tell the general public how we need to live our lives.

    • Kasper Verweij
Kasper Verweij 2 months ago +1

Elarson222 So it’s more the way it’s brought and not the message itself? Because that I can totally get behind, if someone thinks you’re a duck because you don’t agree with them then they’re the ducks, respect is important.

    • Elarson222
      Elarson222 2 months ago

Aaron Rosenberg I can respect your concern but I’m not some bigot. I have friends, good friends in the LGBT community, and I’m not using that as leverage for this topic. What I don’t care about is the daily media grind to bring this as a talking point as if the average individual is out to get the LGBT community. If they were then you would have a case. I care about the fact that we all have our struggles in this world but it’s impractical to try and make our struggles everyone else’s. We are all different in various ways and we should all be entitled to be different in various ways. If someone tells you you need to respect this individual because x, y, and z, I’ll take issue with that’ll day. People need to earn respect from there piers, not force it. I care about all individual but respect need to be earned, not forced! Please don’t tell me what I care and don’t care for.

    • Aaron Rosenberg
      Aaron Rosenberg 2 months ago

You completely missed the point of the talk. Telling us that "no one cares" is simply your way of saying that _you_ don't care, and you _wish_ nobody else cared. Nobody is trying to tell you how do live your life. But they are asking you to see them for who they are. And that really bothers you.

@Shawn Tomac also, way to put "biology" in quotation marks as if its open to interpretation. A trans woman is biologically not a real woman, by the laws of what defines male and female. If you want to try and change the definition of biology to feel better you can, but biology at this current moment is an exact science with definitions and rules, and asking others to bend it so that you can feel better is selfish and counter-productive.
There's nothing arbitrary about separating preferred pronouns from biology. Unless your preferred pronoun is your biological gender, the two are totally mutually exclusive. Your biological gender is not yours to decide, just like how I cant decide what planet I was born on.

@Shawn Tomac what a strange thing to fixate on. I said "Well actually" because you were trying to tell me what the intentions and nature of my own words are, which you hadnt even read.
Now youre trying to tell me how ive been treated my whole life when you dont even know who I am. Im more than happy to admit when Im wrong, but theres no discussion to be had when your opinion is that its perfectly acceptable to silence anybody who disagrees with you.
If my opinion was that you arent entitled to share your opinion, would you call this a discussion?

@Goobs Dog I cannot believe you honestly typed the phrase "Well, Actually" seriously. What a meme.
Your intentions don't matter. Clearly you've spent your life having your opinion coddled. Everything you say is judged by what you put down. Death of the Author, your opinion is tangential at best.
I am not censoring anything. You wanted a discussion, and now your whining about the discussion you got. I'm offering you the gift of Outside Perspective, holding up the mirror of how you appear to others, and your responding with a completely emotional and unnecessary defensiveness.
Your never going to grow with that attitude

@Shawn Tomac well, actually I am the best judge of whether or not my comment is offensive, seeing as though I wrote it with the intention of provoking discussion, not arguments.
Right now youre trying to censor our opinions by labelling them as offensive and bullying when you havent even read them. I dont know what youve read or by whom, but most level headed people out there have no issues having civil discussions on these topics, and i honestly find it pathetic that you would argue our opinions arent even worth hearing based on somebody else's. Should I disregard your opinion outright because ive met LGBTQ people who are assholes and try to bully and offend? What a sad approach.

for those who dont understand: he's just saying how we're all labelled and as a minority it can be difficult and complicated to step out of the norm than you're used to. your identity is our own and not what youre labelled as. basically, equality should transcend no matter what or who you are especially in cases where the societal perception contradicts your actual identity

“Equality should transcend no matter what . . . Especially in cases where societal perceptions contradicts your ‘your actual identity’?” How about when reality contradicts those perceptions? • Matthew Jackson
Matthew Jackson 2 months ago +4

So explain to me this. The LGBTQ community only wants equality right? No because we gave them that and now they have more rights than any other group of people, probably in the planet. And they didn’t do this by simple legislation they did this by using scare tactics and forcing their ideologies on the public who respectfully said I will tolerate your lifestyle but I will never accept it as their truth. Now they infiltrated our schools, our children and their shows and are forcing their ideologies to the point where if you disagree with anything they stand for You will lose your jobs? lifestyle and reputation. They seem like bullies to me. That’s all they are entitled bullies who use false oppression as a weapon to FORCE their beliefs unto people lifestyles and cultures. And you see it everyday they have more rights than anyone. They are not oppressed they are very privileged individuals. Be honest with yourself.

Paige B How the world learned to say s0d0m!te instead of lgbt person. (brainwashing and indoctrination). Brainwashing and indoctrination works both ways, you’ve been conditioned to see them as s-word and others directly categorise with the lgbt label. Both should be able to look past the conditioning and see a fellow person, maybe even potential friend, what they do in their bedrooms or how the prefer to be called shouldn’t stand in the way of respecting other people
