This is a video intended to start a conversation about mental health. Keep in mind, this video is prerecorded-it is not monetized. I decided that it was important for me to share my mental health struggles now, and over the years in order to break the stigma surrounding therapy and how important it is to your physical and emotional well-being. Mental health is health. I recorded this video over a week ago and have taken steps to improve my mental well-being and I can say that my emotions do not feel as heavy anymore. I wanted to post it on the day that would make the most impact for mental health in Canada. Today, January 26, is Bell Let’s Talk Day. For every tweet using the Bell Canada will donate $0.05 to mental health initiatives and the same amount will be donated when the hashtag is used in a tweet, retweeted, or used on TikTok. Join the conversation or retweet me on Twitter @charlottedobre and let’s break the stigma surrounding seeking help for mental health.
*This is not an official Bell Let’s Talk video*
Hi, I'm Charlotte Dobre. I'm an actor, reactor, singer and sometimes (not really) comedian. On this channel I do reactions, commentary and occasionally I crack a joke or two. I upload daily, usually 7 days a week, unless life gets crazy or I get lazy. Come hang out, it's a good time.

There's an incredible beauty in watching someone drop down their guard and have the courage to be frail. Thank you for this, Charlotte. Your timing with this subject was great, too.
I've had a streak of "not okay" as well for the past few months. Just last week I had a wonderful discussion with a colleague about it. His profound words about accepting yourself and embracing yourself as you are really stuck to me:
"Even the weak you is still you".

You’re never alone. As a veteran who’s dealt with PTSD since 2009, I get having the tough days. I love when people who have a platform like you bring mental health issues to light because it still has such a stigma attached to it.

    • Magna Carta
      Magna Carta 2 months ago

Me too, since 2011 though. I remember I didn’t feel comfortable with a ptsd diagnosis until after I became a veteran, I used to think “How dare I, when so many have been through worse.” Then I volunteered for worse, lol
One thing I learned was how ridiculous I was being, because later it was just “how dare I, when so many didn’t get to make it home.” So sure, there’s always someone with worse, but that doesn’t mean our feelings don’t matter. Ever since I’ve made it through that mental break, I do better emotionally all around. Every day is a fight, but I’m just grateful for a day when it’s easier, and even hoping for an easier day can be enough to give me the strength to get through.
It wasn’t just my brothers and sisters and uniform, most of my friends from before that time never made it into adulthood. As long as we are still breathing we have a chance to have a brighter day.
It is indeed, ok to not be okay, it’s a rough time to be alive, and there is a lot to be stressed about. Fight for that brighter day though, where there is still life, there is hope.

Yes. The stigma associated with mental health causes so much suffering to go on and on for people because they don't want anyone to know they're not well mentally.

Charlotte, you can't imagine the impact it has for someone as glamorous, funny and successful as you to come out and say that things aren't always easy. Thank you for your vulnerability. Simply being real past the social media veil helps people to stop comparing themselves to impossible images of life and THAT is huge for mental health.

Charlotte...you are right. There is no shame in going to a therapist for help. I have one that I have a great rapport with since 1999. He can be funny, but he always listens to me when serious things happen in my life. I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. He shows me exactly what you said...that it's okay to not be okay, and to always ask for help.

You're a light in the darkness to do many, including me and we appreciate you for the laughs on your normal content and the honesty and openness you've shown on this video. As a former therapist, I like this video because you're open about your pain and healing begins with admitting that you have pain to heal. You'll make it. @Melissa Lynn Often people think that they are helping others by always being the "strong" one and always be ok, but this isn't the case most of the time. Not being ok is also strong! And by showing others it is ok to be not ok, you also teach them that it is ok to not be ok, which is also better for their health. ❤

I need to be kinder to myself. Thank you. Thank you for being vulnerable. You couldn’t have said it any better, “talk to yourself the way that you would talk to your friend to be encouraging”. I am a retired psychiatrist and you are a gem. This is my first TheXvid "comment". Thank you from the fullness of my heart for reaching out to all of us. (Yes, even mental health professionals struggle). Talking to friends and family is lovely but when our usual strategies are not working, talking to a good therapist provides an opportunity to step back and tell your story to a neutral and caring third party. This can provide crucial perspective when we feel lost in mental/emotional loops. I could say much more but this is really about saying "thank you".

I started seeing a therapist a couple of months ago due to depression and so far her only advice is "why can't you be normal?" Don't get me wrong, she never said anything that overt, but she's asked me numerous times and a few variations of why I can't think and act more like everyone else. I finally had to tell her the old quote: To thine own self be true. I don't think I'm meant to "fit in" and fighting the urge to be myself for decades, -to be who my friends were, who my family wanted me to be - wasn't good for who I am. And that's where a lot of the depression came in.

Thank you so much for trusting us with your feelings Charlotte. I'm also glad to hear you're feeling better lately. I recently started talking to a therapist again for past unresolved trauma and frequent anxiety and panic attacks. The thing that makes me feel bad is that this is my second therapist after my first therapist and I agreed I most likely didn't need any more therapy because I was doing so well. Lately, I've been in a downward spiral and actually talked to my doctor to start on meds for my mood. I have an amazing support system in my husband and young son and I'm doing better and loving myself a little more every day. Like you said, it's hard but it's okay not to be okay and it's okay to ask for help. I'm in school to be an elementary teacher and I hope to be the love and light and person to lean on in children's lives that I never had. Thank you for always making me laugh 💕

Thank you for sharing that you’re human. I, myself have been suffering from depression and have had really dark thoughts but have managed to not self harm. Quick time line, 2015 in wheelchair permanently, 2016 lost my husband, 2017 my brother was murdered, 2018 had 5 surgeries, 2019, 5 more surgeries, 2020, I lost my sister and then COVID. No one in my immediate family got it but I haven’t been anywhere since the onslaught, my immune system is almost nonexistent. That’s pretty much all the crap that I got oh except for being broke.
I have beautiful granddaughters who bring me joy and I seek out reasons to smile, laugh, to reach out to anyone who wants someone to listen to them. That’s what keeps me going and you Miss Charlotte, make me laugh to the point where I shot tea out my nose and once I peed a little. Thank you for the levity you bring us all

I had almost four months of feeling like I was just dragging, couldn't put my game face on.
I went and had what I call my levels checked. I was low on progesterone, which is what makes you feel calm in times of stress. I've been taking a few other things as well but that helped me alot. This is awesome on so many levels. First being brave enough to come forward with mental illness. You give a face to mental issues, you show us how to be human in this inhumane world. You bring laughter and fun when other things are dismal. Thank you. Please listen to your inner self, be good to yourself, take breaks. We will all still be here when you return. I am a mental health therapist in the US where I see so many patients who all struggle and struggle together. I also struggle with major depression, anxiety among other issues. We can only do this if we do it together.

MANY people suffer from depression, anxiety, "the blues", etc. But few actually seek help for it. Thank you for speaking about your personal struggles. It's not easy to open up to anyone, but it's SOOOO necessary.
Stay strong...love your content...love YOU...and thank you for being vulnerable. :-)

When I ran my own business and had a couple of employees I felt the same kind of pressure. One thing I had to accept was that my time was NOT my time. 60-70 hours a week was normal for years while I was also raising my kids. It was intense. And having the right therapist is priceless. Hang in there. 💗

You definitely do help me through every day.... I lost my husband two months ago and I dont have much motivation to do anything. Im 50 something sitting in a cafe by a fire watching your video. now I cant get up until the tears dry up. If I can help anyone with my little story about my depression. I had it really bad few years back and with anxiety. I thought i was one day away from being sectioned. I called a friend who suggested I keep away from gluten. Heck, why not. nothing else worked. 2 weeks with no pasta, bread, doughnuts etc, all my comfort food gone... I was fine! and have been so for now 12+ years. The science... if ones gut is damaged with sandpaper gluten the adrenal gland (and others) chip in to fix it = less happy moods, more down, exhausted moods. healthy gut, healthy mind. Not a fix all for everyone but something to share. thank you charlotte for your energy. be gentle with yourselves and try not to overstretch, its ok to step off the gas and put yourself first. it really is. peace and love 💕

This actually helped me not feel so alone. I've been in a really dark place since January. I spent most of January in the hospital (half of that in the ICU completely sedated.) I woke up in that ICU the day before my 50th birthday, not even knowing how I ended up there in the first place. I came home at the end of January unable to stand, so completely bedridden, having to rely on my husband for everything. I still haven't been able to leave my room yet. It's left me really feeling really depressed and hopeless. But I'm finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. Physical therapy came by today (for the first time) and I have actually been able to stand!!!!! Huge progress!

Hello CHarlotte, I know that it has been a while since you uploaded this but still, I just have to let you know how much I appreciate your honesty and your courage and your dedication to what you love. It moved me to tears to hear you speak about a topic that keeps impacting my live too, mental health. We have the year 2022 and still it is a very difficult topic and many people are afraid to speak about it in fear of getting ridiculed or stupid phrases like "Just snap out of it" or "Dont make such a drama out of it, we all have bad days".
But a depression is not "having a bad day". It is much, much worse. And I 100% agree with you that it would be benificial for all of us to talk to a therapist now and then because, well, they are the doctors for our mind and soul and we go see a doctor for the body when we dont feel good too, so why not go see someone if we dont feel good mentaly...or better yet, BEFORE we start feeling bad?
So, long story short: Thank you! I thank thee with all my heart, your clips never fail to reach me and are a great source of entertainment for me in a rather hard time I am going through right now. And please never forget, we all need shoulders to lean on to sometimes, so thanks for lending us yours but make sure you get your share of leaning too ok? :)

@Praetorian666 Did you not listen to her. The main cause of her stress was having to do with TheXvid punishing creators when they need to take a break. She's not even allowed to take a day off since she has employees who depend on her for their income as well. I'm merely pointing out that TheXvid is a company that doesn't pay attention to the mental health of its creators. I know that she is an amazing person who has done so much for us and that we all love her. I don't depend on TheXvid's crappy notifications to tell me when she posts. I know there are a lot of people supporting her. She's still creating but needs us to know how she is doing. I get that you support her, I do too. Calm, we are all on the same side.

I had a breakdown this morning. It's tough being strong. Mostly because everyone always thinks you're okay, and with that, you always try to be okay so everyone else doesn't panic. But I'm glad that you are prioritizing yourself. It is always necessary. And sometimes, when we go through these kinds of situations, it's a reminder not to quit, but to rest every now and then. I hope that you are feeling better now. To share with those who might need someone to talk to and can't afford therapy, in the past I used Betterhelp. It's an app that connects you to licensed and qualified therapists. It's flexible and affordable and they offer financial aid. And I'd also like to say, that it's okay not to be okay. Sending you a virtual hug. Feel better soon.

I'll be 67 on Sunday and feel like Charlotte. Spent two and a half days in bed last week because I just couldn't manage life outside of it. Chronic depression is difficult and the last two years caught up. A bit better now. It's stupid that these platforms for young people are so old-fashioned regarding their business model at the same time they proport to be so progressive in their social-cultural agenda. No one should be penalized for posting less often (I'm thinking also about the income loss of LeighannSays who has had to take months off after the birth of her baby). They bring in so much revenue for these platforms andshouldn't punish these creators. Continue the sweet work, Charlotte.
