How to Narrate Your Life Story

  • Published on Jun 20, 2017
  • The difference between despair and hope often boils down to different ways of telling stories from the same set of facts. Some of the art of living means learning how to tell the story of our lives back to ourselves. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide):

The only thing I feel like saying, is that the way you talk to yourself makes all the difference. And I'm usually very hard on myself, so I'm not saying it's easy. But once you start doing it, once you start accepting and loving your story, it will get easier and easier.

Hi, Thank you! I really needed this today.I'm sick, needing a kidney transplant and on dialysis,I'm living with my sister and her family for the moment but she's decided to kick me out. So I'm having to go to the government welfare office this morning to apply for help.
I was our Mother's caregiver for twenty five years after she was hit by a drunk driver and permanently disabled. After she passed I got sick and now when I'm the one that needs help,I'm made to feel like an unwanted burden.
People keep telling me it's her problem and not me, but it still hurts to feel so easily discarded. Trying to tell my story to myself in a positive light. Hope it works:/ Thanks.

Hi Michael, I think an aspect of your story is how heroic you were with your mother. Even if others can't be as heroic as you were, it was still wonderful that you did what you did. I hope things work out for you.

I have grown up around very ill people and have worked with them and their families. This is very difficult for both the patient and the family. It can create many resentments on both ends. Hopefully the love you have for each other will help you through it. I know it is not that simple but in our family it is what keeps us together. Many times we dont like each other but we do love one another.

I love the style of this video. It makes me feel like I am being read to. It feels like a bedtime picture book for grown ups, where complicated problems are clearly stated and placed within a safely viewed but whole and honest construct. I appreciate these videos and the time I spend with them daily.

  • Mighty Salmon Studios Limited

This video is beautiful. Rejection and failure are hard to accept, but when you do accept it as part of life, you see it as something beautiful. A journey of battles to reach victory, not a journey of despair.

Excellent video. I personally always focus on the negatives in life and beat myself up for mistakes and missed opportunities. When in fact, mistakes are an essential part of learning and improving.

On social media, we tend to only see the good highlights of other peoples lives making us feel less successful and valued. But we all make mistakes. We're only human after all. Have a good day everyone.

I failed medchool in Berlin 2 years ago. My entire life fell apart. I had to move back to the city where my parents stay, because my jobs were bound to the condition of me being a medstudent. I am 28 now, have been struggling against suicidal impulses, lost major parts of my humorous, extroverted personality, have become isolated (I have no friends in this city), alone. I struggle everyday to try to get back into another medical school (outside germany), but there are many barriers that end up preventing it (tuition in UK and US, language barriers in other EU countries etc.). I hate my life and don't know what to do. All my life I was the straight A student. Always did my best. In medschool, while others went partying, relaxing or sleeping, I was working in one of my 3 jobs to get through the month, while trying to pass my exams and have a perfect attendance in university. In the end, a heavy depression and burn-out, ruined an important exam. I failed 2 times in a row (didn't attend the first time and failed the remaining two attempts.. always the same way... months of hard studying, just to sit in front of the exam and suddenly having no knowledge to draw upon.. as if the hours of mental torture and discipline neverhappened..). Now the guys that always copied my answers during exams or whom I explained things, who had money and a life, are wearing white coats, treat patients and tell others how hard they worked, while I went above and beyond my limits and lost everything. I want to be a doctor. There is no other profession I can see myself in. I am lost.

I understand your sentiments regarding comparision. I had a burn out just like you and was under mild depression and anxiety for 2 and half years. I found no motivation at all in that time. Im thankful to my parents who supported me financially, emotionally during that rough period. Im much better now even though people younger to me have progressed in their career. But now, I want to continue with my newfound enthusiasm. It is very common among medical students to actually have burnouts and you had many factors causing it. You are not so old and im in my late 20s too. Just dont be so hard on yourself, give some time for your mental health as well and everything will fall back in place. Best regards!

    • Tracesprite
      Tracesprite Year ago +1

I think you're very brave and determined but you should let go of the medical school idea. Sit quietly and say to your own mind, "please don't send me this depression. Tell me what I should know." Then wait quietly and consider the ideas that occur to you. Discard the self destructive ones. Consider the workable positive ones. Through medical school you probably wanted to help others. There are many ways to do this e.g. ambulance officer. Also learn to value the viral unpaid work that makes such a difference e.g. being a good friend to someone. I think one good friend is more valuable than 8 psychologists. Consider the great good that is done by those who are good gardeners, creating beauty, healthy vegetables and their own good health. Thinking laterally can really help when all seems lost.

Thanks for sharing your story. I've been in your situation. Obviously this has caused a great deal of pain in your life and nobody can really tell you what to do. One thing I suggest to people who experience failure is to go back to reexamine their relationships. I believe that depression and anxiety are the results of spending time with toxic people who don't have your best interest. As soon as you stop hanging out with such people and replace them with optimistic caring loving human beings your life will change for the best. Good luck.

Your faith has got to be greater than your fear. Your love must be greater than everything. Stay positive, because whether you are alright or not, if you can or cant, you are correct either way. So don't fill your mind and heart with anxiety based on negative expectations, instead do the contrary believe in the higher version of yourself guided through love and understanding towards your existence and life. Luv 2 all.

I fell in love with School of Life because of the Philosophy, Literature, Art & Architecture and Religion pieces.

My desires to see more of those doesn't change how much adoration this channel gets -- and that adoration is deserved. But if it isn't being said, and it probably is (I try not to read too many comments ever), I would say there needs to be less of this introspective, downtrodden stuff and more of the focused lessons, mentioned earlier, that seem to genuinely earn the title of School of Life.

The feelings couldn't have been more perfectly worded, and the emotions are absolutely real. Thank you so much for making this beautiful video and making me more hopeful about life.

@Cliff Hanley I mean that we have to spread kindness everyday in life so therefor life and livings meanings are kindness for me. Kindness, positivity, helpfulness, belief and faith are all the keys to achieve. (I know this by my own experience.) May not be for you though...depends on your destiny and experience.

My story would be that I had a difficult childhood due to having immigrant parents with no real parenting skills and no family support. School was difficult to grow accustomed to as I was the first child in our family to attend an American school. I learned to survive and get good grades but always felt I didn't belong. I was able to attend college and graduate. This was the best of times because I was able to be more independent and not so sheltered. I had some good friends, good jobs and travel. I met a man who shared my core values despite growing up very differently. We got married and had my husband's daughter live with us as she finished hight school. She had a baby girl soon after. We love this girl so much. We never had common children but experienced parenthood through our grand daughter. She is very smart and aware. She's not easy to fool. My parents aged and started having health issues. We didn't always get along but we do know. I realized they really did do the best that they could. I love them. I am now middle aged a d cannot believe that times flew by so fast. I wonder what will happen to the rest of our lives. The entire time we have had God in our lives. We have been very blessed. To be continued. .......

I re-watch a lot of TSOL's videos. Most of the times I leave them as background noise. But some days I just find myself crying for the first time to a vide that I've watched a hundred times before without flinching . Like today. I guess you have to be in certain states of mind or points in your life to really let In the message in some of the videos.

This is so true, we must learn from our mistakes, some that we control other we can't. We must know that we are all incredible beings. We are masterpieces of the universe.

Funny that this video begins with citation of Macbeth, which is the work for my B.A. thesis. The whole tragedy lies within oneself and it is our job to present the world not in agony, but with an optimistic attitude others the faults, the problems we have to face, to make them believe that we face them without passionante fury, but with a healthy lust for life. Thumbs up.
