The Huawei Mate X is an untouchable foldable

  • Published on Feb 24, 2019
  • The Huawei Mate X foldable phone is a thinner 5G rival to the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Samsung’s announcement isn’t even a week old yet, and we already have a competitor. Launching at MWC 2019, the Mate X has an 8-inch wraparound OLED display, a folded thickness of 11mm, and a formidable spec sheet highlighted by 5G, a 4,500mAh battery, and Huawei’s in-house Kirin 980 processor. Also, price will be €2,299 for 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

It looks really nice, and I like the fact that the main cam can be used for selfies, but I'm worried that the screen will scratch super easily, and why is it so much more expensive than the Galaxy?

Samsung wins hands down. The book-like folding system is much better for use and possible scratches. And you can see the top-notch tech put into the hinge. And it's much cheeper.

@UClvYKJY5b5F3LahF4lwtKMg screen wrinkling problem seem to be ok, only at first, samsung also developed this 3 years ago, there's reason why they gave up.
the wrinkling problem will get so bad, the screen will be un usable in the end.
huawei stole samsung and lg tech, to make this, but will go through same problem

people don't seem to realize, samsung basically made outfolding device 3 years ago with flexible amoled.
samsung concluded, outfolding devices don't work, the screen will fail fast.
that's why they developed even more challenging tech: infolding screens
huawei, on the other hand, stole samsung's tech, and selling it now... lol, it will fail unfortunately.

The Samsung is more durable as the screen is protected, how scratch resistent are these foldable screens? You can't use screen foils so in my opinion the Huawei looks better more futuristic but how long that screen will last especially on the edge? If it's dropped in all scenarios the impact will affect the screen.

So, have you seen the virtual Samsung Fold? haha

  • YEdwardP
    YEdwardP 6 months ago

So, I think Huawei's approach to the fold is better in terms of avoiding wearing out the screen by having a less sharp fold. Theoretically better for long term reliability of the screen.
That said, I prefer the form factor of the Galaxy Fold. The way the outer screen is like the cover of a book you're opening really appeals to me.
As for the outer screen being small, that is true. But since you have a larger screen on the inside, I think the idea is to have a small screen on the outside that you can really use with just your thumb, like earlier smartphones. Because let's be honest, one-handed usage is a feature that really has fallen by the wayside in the race to larger phones.

Realistically, however, I'm probably going to buy neither of these phones.

    HAWXLEADER 6 months ago

Huawei's screen gets wrinkled due to tension and compression while the galaxy's screen is clean.
Samsung are not stupid they know what they are doing when choosing not to bend it outwards...
    Personally I don't want a wrinkled tablet...

The problem is that when screen was fold to back it is really easy to get scratch because it is a plastic screen... If Huawei solve this problem it will be the perfect foldable device.
