Oh my....! I can't disagree your points at all! Yes you're right Apple brings the professional level hardware and items, for everybody although it may not be affordable. Example would be Apple implementing 5K display on a regular iMac.

People who spend $30-40,000 on post production monitors want SDI inputs, if they live in FCPX, they’ll buy their $20,000+ Mac Pro, and skip the XDR. I don’t know who this monitor is for.

There needs to be a "Mac". It would be built on proprietary motherboards, cases, and power supplies as that's how apple does things, but allow for them to use DDR4 DIMMs, eighth/ninth generation Core series processors, and PCI Express expansion for upgradeability for a $1999 - $2999 base price, what the Mac pro used to cost.
It fills up the desktop space between the casual user's Mac Mini and the actual professional's Mac Pro desktops, and mirrors what they've done with the iPhone, making a base model iPhone 11 that's the old flagship price of $699, and the 11 pro costing $1000+

The base model of Mac pro is fucking shit
8 core xeon? Throw in a fucking i9 ffs
256 GB internal memory? What year is this? 2014
And Radeon 580x is fucking shit
32 gigs of ram is good enough
I don't know why the base model even exists , iMac pro is a better deal tbh

The only thing more tiresome than people complaining about the price of the MP / XDR are the people who get off telling those who do that the products simply "aren't for them". If you have any sense you will realize that Mac users became accustomed to being able to have an all-Apple computer setup and now that is no longer an option which is frustrating to them. The reality is that a Thunderbolt Display type of product would be a popular product but whether or not Apple sees it the same way is another question. Who knows, but I am hopeful that the team who developed the XDR may move onto a lower-end display product next. Either way, I'll be using my Thunderbolt Display as long as possible. I'd rather switch to an iMac than have a cheap-looking LG on my desk though.

1: Apple products were affordable for normal people back in the day. Now only overly wealthy people can/should buy them.
    2. The target demographic is not professionals but the common crowd. Otherwise they would have invited only the so called professionals for the event and wouldn’t present it to the common crowd.
    This vid is bs

  • lestat1886
    lestat1886 4 months ago

You are upset about the pro display just because it’s not for the target you thought about... you are not disapointed by this product jist disapointed there is not another one!
And yes despite what you said you don’t like it because it’s not for you and it’s a niche product! Some pro do need a 6k !
Others are not neglected: imac pro, mac mini MacBook pro: those are for prosumers!

  • kanedanoglory

A dummy can build a computer that would kick the crap out of that thing for less than half the cost. Heck even that dude from The Verge How to Build a Computer video could do it --maybe. Most people aren't up in arms about the computer or even the monitor. They are finally opening their eyes to the ridiculousness that is Apple for selling a monitor stand for $999. They realize you can basically buy several books and online courses that will teach you how to design a stand, design it, take the design to someone to actually build it, attach swords and knives and other cool stuff to it (cheap swords and knives, mind you --real ones are quite expensive) and then order a family dinner for 4 and still come out ahead. Apple is a terrible company. And really, anyone that has an Apple product and complains about world peace, poor people, starving children, or pay inequality deserves a punch in the face.

I'm sorry but this video is so misaligned. I remember those days when Apple displays were the only great options on the market, but look at what's available now. The monitor market has great 4k-8k options and work for the majority of professionals now.
Also, let's get real. There are so many great options now for "everyday" professionals to do work via Apple computers. iMacs, iMac pros, Mac minis, and even MacBook pros have 8 core processors now. We also live in a time with edit-friendly codecs/formats, external GPUs, and extremely fast external storage. This is ranting that pro doesn't include everyone as it did back in the day. However, you still have amazing options that are cheaper now from Apple. He literally has a iMac pro!

    Then

  • Ryan O

I totally agree. They catered to the wrong audience. But I think Apple realized it could not compete in the prosumer market you are talking about. People that were waiting for a replacement for the trashcan since 2013 are stuck buying an iMac pro. They would do much better just building a custom PC for half the price. And it's upgradable, and uses standard hardware. Amazing!

As a motion graphic designer, animator illustrator, he kinda has a point. Professionals that loved the G5 & skipped the ‘trashcan’ have already gotten comfortable in the PC domain as they began to have to learn how to custom build. Apple has enough money to take a gamble to RE-capture this market after years
If this is a true PRO product, lets hope they support it for 15+ years

$999 Monitor Stand just seems like a PR STUNT now and yikes did it work amazingly well.
They targeted such a tiny niche maybe because Apple is NOT Capable of mass production capacity of a high end Monitor Anymore. Apparently the Monitor & Screen Panel industry is really tough especially when you source Panels from Suppliers. Extreme Pro Reference Monitors is an automatic limitation of demand.

I think your take on the Mac Pro and Pro Display is spot on.
I cannot get over how many people are jumping on the "This product is not for you!" bandwagon. It's insane. It's like the Power Mac G3, G4, G5, Mac Pro 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010/12 were never made and never priced in the $2000-3000 range. And like there haven't been hordes of pros and prosumers DYING to have the ability to purchase to an updated Mac with SLOTS. Holy hell...SLOTS!! Like those of us wanting a reasonably priced Mac that you can expand- yano, like most sub-$1000 PC towers?!?- are stupid for being a bit miffed that Apple has finally gotten off its ass to do something and then completely priced it out of the largest market segment that wanted it!
So...great- 1. thousands of pro/prosumer/enthusiast users clamor FOR YEARS for a long lasting void to be filled; 2. Apple hears them, promises to fill the void, takes 2 years to design a seemingly great platform...and then overprices the hell out of it. So #1 wants something that Apple hasn't been giving, then Apple designs and builds what #1 wants...but it's so expensive that it's now "not for them"? WTF??
In almost all of this, I still don't see any of the "Not for you" lemmings assessing value. The $8200 HP Z8 8-core workstation that they compared to in the keynote has a **vastly** more expensive CPU in it than the Mac Pro has. Up-configuring to that CPU (Xeon Gold 6134) alone increases the Z8's price by FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS. But I think the Mac Pro team is actually mistakenly comparing their machine (w/ a Xeon W that costs under $1000) to this configuration. They simply aren't the same and a cost comparison between them is not reasonable.
In any case, just because Apple slaps a ridiculously high price tag on something doesn't mean that something should automatically move WAY upmarket and be "not for you." While this looks to be a great machine, it is not so different from the past Power Macs and Mac Pros that it is now for a completely different audience. To the contrary- it is VERY similar to those ancestors and should be priced more in line w/ them, rather than double their costs.

  • TalesOfWar
    TalesOfWar 5 months ago

Apple used to cater to the "every day professional" because nobody else did, at least not at a reasonable price point. I'm sat in front of a nice Dell UltraSharp professional, colour accurate display. Were it not for Apple pushing the Cinema Displays back in the day and charging quite reasonable prices for such high quality monitors then the thing I'm looking at right now either wouldn't exist, or would cost far more than it does now. The fact is, most of the areas Apple sold in have become commodity, or served well enough by others for them to just not care about it. Plenty of companies offer high quality, accurate monitors for your computer these days, why should Apple compete in such a low margin space when what they bring to the table is practically the same thing in a nicer shell?
Apple tend not to bother so much in a market unless they can bring something genuinely better to the table. This Pro Display XDR is ABSOLUTELY an area they've very clearly brought something better to the table, and smashed the competition. Its a perfect example of their "do it right or dont bother" attitude they've become known for over the years. They didn't make the first MP3 player, but the iPod was the best. Same for the iPhone, it wasn't the first touch screen phone, but it was the best. iPad wasn't the first tablet with touch input, but it was the best etc etc.
