How Dead Space's Scariest Scene Almost Killed the Game | War Stories | Ars Technica

  • Published on Jan 8, 2019
  • Glen Schofield, the co-founder of Sledgehammer Games and the creator/director of Dead Space, goes in-depth on the development of the classic third-person horror shooter. Glen set out to create the scariest video game of all-time, borrowing gameplay elements from Resident Evil 4 to create a product with a unique blend of horror and action. Always upping the ante, the Dead Space team decided to create a massive dreadful tentacle that attacks and drags the game's protagonist around the environment. Little did they know, this element would prove far more difficult to develop then they had ever realized..

Dude, Regardless Of The Sad 3rd Sequel, Top Regards and High Comments Are Well Deserved Even If Only For The 1st 2. If EA/Visceral Do Decide To "Bring Back To Life" The Best Space Age Horror 3rd Person Strategy - Physics/Shooter If All On The Base Core Ideals Of The Very 1st Original Could Do So Much To All Of Us Who Miss It So Much Like The Original Terminator...Nothing Will Give It Justice Agreed But That Doesnt Mean They Should Walk Away After Such Impressive Acheviement In Establishing Such An Immersive Saga. Im All For Another Try Only As Long As Its All In Respect And Commemoration++ and So Much More To The First. If They Fail And Give It The Most Humiliating Defeat In Pleasing Unrelated Markets and Expectations....We Should All Get Together And Make A Mod With All Parties Responsible In Place Of The Necros And Let Us Have Our Way With Them. Otherwise If They Really Want To Give True Value To The Timeless Original They Should Be Able To Do So More Than Ever. Just Dont Fk It Up FFS...!!!! Pretty Please....!!!!
If Done Correctly Ill Decide To Return To The Console Universe AND Purchase a new Set Up Just For Loyalty Which I Believe Isaac Alone Deserves At The Very Least Let Alone The Team Behind Him....

It really is a damned shame the series can't continue; part 3 had potential, & a good ending.

Dead Space was the first horror game I ever played, and now I'm an addict to terror. This first game is distilled dread.
Edit: that tentacle. That. Tentacle. The first time I saw its hole while walking past I was dreading something coming out behind me, but that never happened; over the course of the next section I had forgotten about it. And then it was there. There aren't many times where I've felt truly like prey, but this was one.

Dead space is a cash cow.... and needs revitalized. Honestly needs a HD release for 1 and 2 will never happen though cause people are idiots and cant see money in their face. Deadspace 4 id love to play one day but honestly id rather just play Deadspace 1 and 2 again. Perfect story its a complete masterpiece that should have already made it to film.

I just wanna say, relating to the "don't want a talking character," angle, but I have yet to see, even in the taking Isaac games, what about "hey do this dumb horror trope." and then the pro says "hell no, really?" then the game says "Okay. You right, do this instead." That would really bring a talking character into the story. Obviously you gotta figure out the balance between a hero and everyone's hero, but that would de-demonize the "talking protagonist," in most horror games. Can't keep being ignorant to human realism when it comes to horror. Love what has happened in the franchise, despite the EA, and the aforementioned story gripes.

Why does nobody else seem to know that there were going to be miner/engineer Slashers wearing gas masks in the game?! They were scrapped and it's a shame, because they looked very scary with gas masks that had broken lenses with moving tentacles sprouting out of them! I've seen the concept art and in-game images of the gas mask Slashers in the beta versions of the game and they looked awesome!
Here's an image of the Slasher with a gas mask:
Here's an image of the Slasher that replaced him:
Here's an image of Isaac being surrounded by Slashers:, two of them have a gas mask, the one on the far-right behind the other Slashers has a gas masks without tentacles, the other gas mask-wearing Slasher is on the left and he has tentacles coming from the broken lenses.
Here's concept art of the creepy gas mask Slasher:
This Slasher was also scrapped, but he was turned into the Enhanced Slasher:
Here he is with a gas mask-wearing miner/engineer Slasher:

Such a shame this studio isn’t still here. God I wish I could have a game just like dead space one again. I remember watching TheXvid videos of it when I was too broke to afford a ps3 as a little kid. I finally got one in time for the second game and o bought it the night of release along with a used copy of the first game and I black them in that order. They were both amazing games. Dead space one was terrifying and unique and the second one being my whole cherry on top for the scariest and best days in gaming history I remember being so scared at like 13 playing through this and I’ve played the game so many time I don’t think there is a single jump-scare I couldn’t point and brave like a man with no fears. I played this game through probably a 100 time because I just loved horror movies and this game let me live it through as a unlucky badass space engineer name Isaac.

i couldn't play dead space for more than 15 minutes at a time and took me about 8 months just to play 45 minutes of games play.... i never made 1 hour total play but playing at 2AM on a 55 inch LED smart TV with the lights off and in 7.1 surround sound was the only way i'd play it lol

Any of you see that Netflix game about a game developer corporation who made the scariest game? It was a VR + augmented reality kind. Something i really hope to see in the real world. What it did was, you as a user got an implant that could make you see things as if they were in the room with you. And it could access your memories, your greatest fears. That was the game.
