- The threat of further tsunamis around the Pacific after Saturday's huge underwater volcano eruption near Tonga has passed, a monitoring group says.
On Sunday, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said the threat had receded but coastal areas should remain alert for strong or unusual currents.
The US and Japan earlier warned people to move away from coastal areas.
But while further tsunamis may be unlikely, there are mounting fears over how badly Tonga has been hit.
At a news conference on Sunday, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said boats and large boulders had washed ashore in the island nation's capital Nuku'alofa.

BBC didn't talk about what is going on in the thumbnail, but 5 boats capsized in Kōchi, Japan due to the tsunami. Tsunami warnings were up in Iwate, and the Amami and Tokara Islands in Kagoshima, north of Okinawa, whilst advisories were up for much of Japan's Pacific coasts and islands. All warnings and advisories have since been lifted.

that before and after picture was scary as, the volcano blasted the center of the island to nothing.
It's not really an island, but the top of the submerged volcano. All Islands were formed by volcanic ativity in the past.
Never been happier I didn't move to BC. Praying for everyone suffering this nonetheless.

@David Ford not exactly. Big old Krak (from what I'm aware of) was a much larger and violent. The blast wave was detected for days travelling through the atmosphere. Even with the less sensitive equipment of 1883.
With that said, it's still a massive eruption and hope people managed to get to safety. On the bright side, it'll cause temps to possibly drop for the next couple years due to particular matter in suspension :)
It was about 5.5 magnitude on the ric scale which is about 100 kilotons of tnt. The blast in Hiroshima is about 15kilotons.

With the sound of the blast being recorded in Brisbane, Australia as well as in Alaska, this has to be comparable to the 1883 blast of Krakatoa.
Nothing has been released yet as far as I'm aware but it is certainly more powerful than the tsar bomb (biggest nuclear bomb ever detonated) the ash cloud reached upto 70km into the air so its was very powerful.

Isn’t there an airport in Tonga, or some private citizen with a sat phone, who can get word out? It’s as though nobody knows what’s happening to those poor souls.
Hopefully just the communications are down and the people can hang on until the Aussies and NZers can get to them. Unfortunately you can't just fly a plane through volcanic ash willy nilly.
They’d have satellite phones on the main island.
There are many outer islands there. Some with low population density. They may only have two way radios if the undersea communications are down.
Tonga gets internet via undersea cable from Fiji (or new Zealand ?), If that's severely affected than it might take a while to repair

Mother nature: you cannot predict her nature but can forecast her weather. Whether true or false is but an estimation of the situation. Predicting her course and extent of damage to lives pending loss or escape thereafter though is yet but another probability of the extent of her capability of decimation of part of the population therein or within her scope of annihilation and this too is but a vague estimation. What is a nation to do but await a narration of the situation thereafter on media, as we take tally of her toll on lives lost afterwards!
R.I.P to those afflicted and a quick recovery to those affected. Wishing you God speed and a 'once bitten approach' mentality meditation to those in the area of affliction and probe spots - learn quick from her.
