Hi, Do I want Green Eggs and Ham? No, I do not want it SamIAm. I was very excited about OPTANE. When it came out, decent SSD drives were still expensive and it looked like a good addition to my standard general recommendation for a general use computer. (i7 8gen,16 to 32 GB Ram, 300 to 1tb hard drive. OPTANE did seem to make the computer somewhat faster. These were DELL. I know computers for some 35 years. I get a call that the computer has problems after a week or so. THis client had a DELL service contract so they call me in anyway to make that feared international call. Anticipating that DELL will force a hard drive format etc,. I backed up the drive with no errors. I call DELL and I try to get everything replaced. Its a brand new computer. I waste half a day on the phone with two levels of support. Other than the most basic things -which were all in order, I've done no real diagnostics. I've placed this in the 'Week Later DOA' category in my head. I suggest they send a hard drive a motherboard and a new Optane Unit.
2 Days later, client calls to tell me the DELL repair guy came by, replaced it all and it still doesn't work. After he installed the Windows image onto the 16 GB SSD he made out of the OPTANE chip, there's no room for anything else and the computer does not see the `1TB hard drive. We need a bigger SSD he says as he shrugs and leaves. I see that the OPTANE has been configured as an extremely useless and small (16 GB) SSD by the tech. Well , that doesn''t seem right ! Another tech is sent by DELL. The first thing they want t do is reinstall the duplicate equipment they brought. I work on something else. Two hours later, a tap on the shoulder and I am told "All Done." I go check the computer. It is setup the exact same way that the first tech did except he has replaced the 16 GB OPtane drive with a 32 BIT one so now we have some room for apps and work. At this point, the client is really upset. I am feeling like a jerk for suggesting the OPTANE. I call DELL and I am told that I am doing it all wrong. But I haven't really done anything... I called their Techs whom have no idea what the technology is and cannot fix it. You have to understand it first though. I am sent up to 2 more levels of support at DELL. No one knows how to fix this or handle it. I finally fix it in two seconds. I go into the Intel Software and turn the chip off. I turn the computer off and remove the OPTANE chip. The user, a graphic designer did not even notice material slowness after the chip was removed. I went over other computers I had ordered for clients in the past few months and disabled the chip, leaving it in the units. No more problems. A couple of other clients had reported weird spinning balls, hesitation etc. It all went away when I disabled the OPTANE chip.

Optane (faster OS boot time) VS increased RAM ( Better for running memory intensive programs). In other words...pretty useless if you don't mind spending more money just to shave off a few seconds of boot time.

I simply make my C: drive an SSD and dump only the OS on it using a 1 TB SSD. Then I have 3 4TB HDD 7200 rpm for everything else. If you want fast, this is the best work around I found so far.

About the most confusing video I have ever watched but I do know this. Bought a Dell Inspiron 5570 laptop in November with 16gb of Optane and 4gm of regular memory. Started having problems with it in a few weeks. In January the computer crashed on me and Dell instructed me to reload Windows 10 on it. In February it crashed again and over the phone Dell diagnosed the hard drive to be bad. Got the laptop back a couple of weeks later with a letter saying they replaced the hard drive, nothing else. Fired up computer and saw that they had removed the Optane memory and left in only the 4gb. I searched the internet and found evidence that Optane memory can corrupt hard drives. Will never buy another Dell laptop again, they have not replied to my questions regarding the Optane memory. Live & learn...

Bullshit, the pentagon had projectors bought in 1976 that had sd card slots in them so all of your dates are absolutley wrong. In fact the machine had dvi, usb, sd and ps2 pugs and four of them each on a projector that shot a 80 foot screen that could be seen in the day time, how do I know? well that's my little secret just in case you feel like arguing...I'll whip it out and show you the receipts and the data plate.

My boot drive is SSD so I use the Optane as a small drive for the Windows swap file and some small datasets. i wish I could use it with my large data drive that is not a SSD.
It came with my board and if I had realized it, I would have looked for a board without it for a few dollars less!!!

Intel updated the drivers so you are now able to support secondary drives with Intel Optane memory, so for all you folks with a primary boot SSD and a secondary HDD that holds all your stuff, Optane memory is a much more worthwhile purchase.

I can see here its been less than 2 years since this video has been published. I still don't have any idea what's the real purpose of this Optane thingy. Just for a basis, I have a PC with two SSDs and I am happy with it because its obviously way faster than my HDDs before. Now somebody is trying to sell me an Optane module and I am just wondering what benefits can I get from it, since I feel that I am still okay with my SSDs... any thoughts about this? Your two cents will be highly appreciated.

  • davidletterboyz

The problem is, SSD is so cheap nowadays and if you're building a new Intel system, it's very unlikely you will skip on SSD. Basically this product is for nobody.

You should update this video, now that we know more about Optane memory. I'm running a standard 2TB HDD, with Intel Optane installed. It's been amazing but I'm still not sure how it works :) I know one question I had was: Do you need to defrag? It's a conventional HDD so the answer should be yes, but would it affect Optane? Not much info out there so I decided against.
