Tonga tsunami cuts off nearly all island communications - BBC News

  • A tsunami which hit Tonga has left island communications crippled, with people overseas anxiously waiting for news of loved ones.
The underwater volcano erupted on Saturday, about 65km (40 miles) north of the capital Nuku'alofa.
The eruption, which was heard as far away as the US, caused waves higher than a metre to crash into Tonga.
The authorities have not confirmed any deaths but the scale of the destruction is difficult to establish with phone and internet communications damaged.
But the Red Cross gave some cause for hope, saying reports suggested the damage was not as bad as had been feared.

@Daniel Pacheco Do you know what the real face of the world is? The existence of God(to those who believe), the existence of natural disasters, the existence of bad people and good people, the existence of bad things and good things! This is the real thing about the world we live in! We can't change this fact! So l hope to live in a different place, a safe place, like heaven! So l go to find out, what should l do to go to Heaven! Without God's help, l'm no longer in this world, God gave me love and l'll forever be thankful to God for giving me the strength to overcome my darkest times! @Zackyon I mean... you're not going to send out ships if it might still be dangerous to go and potentially create an even bigger tragedy. You have to considerate everything and all the consequences to ensure safety.

    • Osito Rican
Osito Rican 4 months ago +10

@Zackyon Not sure where you're getting your sources from either because there were many considerations on the ground AND because of COVID. Something that had Tonga government officials very worried would make the situation a lot worse on the ground with contact from foreign sources. This just happened on Saturday so now that a protocol has been set in place and has been deemed acceptable to the Tongan government. Things are moving ahead. Add to that the sporadic communications because their fiber optic line to the world had been knocked out. Assesing the situation on the ground has been extremely difficult. I'd say a 48hr response given everything that's happened is more than adequate. So stop being so dang negative and get your facts right.
It's still a better job than our response to the people affected by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Maria that devastated Puerto Rico and Tonga is even more remotely located.

    • Zackyon
      Zackyon 4 months ago +2

Not sure what news source your getting your info from, but NZ was one of the slowest to respond and initially refused to send ships because the PM felt it was too dangerous.

Oh bloody hell, I look away from the news for a few hours and this is what happens.😱😓 This is quite incredible and terrific. I’m surprised this hasn’t been more as the top headline for the whole day until now. To think within only a few minutes the island where the volcano erupted had already sunk again after seven minutes and has caused this much damage. Considering the multiple islands isolations, I guess it makes sense they’ve only got one fibre-optic cable, but to think it was powerful enough to sever it. The power of this thing is unbelievable. I guess it really is a once in a thousand year event. If it has been disconnected I guess only satellite and radio communications will be possible until others are restored.
Wishing all the best to everyone in Tonga.

Dang! That boom was incredibly loud, and would've scared the shit out of me and so i can only imagine how these folks felt due to just the boom itself. So sad for these people. Glad for the mobilizations and widespread concern for Tonga! I have no connection to Tonga, but the initial responses shown here are impressive. And yay BBC News: You can tell this is not an American News program -- because it doesn't end after three minutes! Rather BBC goes on, in depth, gathering POV's and some clips from Fiji, New Zealand.... Well done. And blessings to Tonga and Tongans.
