If you love Toni Collette in this, try watching United States of Tara. She is a woman with multiple personality disorder, or dissociative identity disorder (D.I.D.) Its a phenomenal 3 seasons, and by far one of my favorite shows that ever existed.

I have been a Hardcore fan of Horror for over 32 years, and this film....this movie...was beyond disturbing, it effected me in a weird way..almost like I was tricked into a subliminal cult movie or something! I mean days after it was still in the back of my head..I honestly was more bothered by this film than the Exorcist..

What I tell people now when they want to watch this movie is “whatever direction you think the movies going to go, it’ll go crazier” this story took so many sharp turns I could’ve sworn I had whiplash, but even then it all made perfect sense.

I really loved when they showed the apparition of Grandma. It was in total silence, and you could barely see her, but she was THERE, and it was like I was looking at her myself. I was just "what the f*** what the f***" because I was so creeped out.

I went into this movie hearing great things about it and expecting to love Hereditary.... But, when I saw it, i didn’t hate it, but i definitely did not love it...
i felt that all of the supernatural stuff in the second half of the film came out of nowhere! Because we had a really good psychological horror film in the beginning part, showing the grief that this family is going through and the family dynamic... and then it gets to the second part of the film and it turns into some supernatural mumbo jumbo that I felt was never explained very well at all... The story of the supernatural being sounds interesting if they had explained it’s story somewhat, but it didn’t.... I don’t want you to treat me like I’m stupid but i also need a bit of explanation because i don’t know the story because there’s no prior source material that i could have “studied” beforehand... it just really confused me because it felt like two different movies (and probably very good if they were two separate entities) were combined into one and that just didn’t leave me very happy/satisfied...

Have to say I disagree with Doug...while distressing, hurtful family drama isn't 'scary'.
It enhanced the horror, no doubt...but curses and a demon is what made it scary.

  • niftysheep

What bothered me a bit about the movie (it was fine imo) was that they shoved so much right into your face. Like "LOOK, here is what tragedy means, they cannot prevent it, you get it?" or "LOOOOK, here is a greek tragedy where family members kill each other" or "HEY LOOOOOOOK, here is a book that suddenly explains all to you" I am a fan of the more subtle way of story telling and this movie was everything but subtle. It seemed so clumsy at times...

    • sab walkswithpurpose
      sab walkswithpurpose 3 months ago

But then a lot of people didn't get the easter eggs planted throughout the movie to show that the finale made sense instead of coming out of nowhere. Assuming the filmmaker wanted MAINSTREAM audiences to understand what he was going for and that he wanted the BITE of the finale that he never would've achieved with subtlety.

  • mizakzee
    mizakzee 4 months ago +1

The horror is a metaphor for the family dynamics and the inheritance of mental illness.
And taken literally you can see that the horror itself was all planned from the beginning of the movie. It's awesome.

I love to hear someone felt like me. I heard a lot of laughing for some reason trough movie and couldnt get it. It was so gut wrenching. And yes, the family drama, tragedy is masterpiece, real value. But still, scary stuff was also different universe to standard of the genre. Creme de la creme, whole package.

there must have been stars lining up or something, because right after the grandma's funeral scene someone outside our theater exit door decided to run a weed eater for about 10min of the movie.
As for the movie itself: it was weird and disturbing, but i didn't find it scary. considering i've grown up on slasher and mystery-suspense films the visuals didn't gross me out. I did too think of the Babadook and VVitch... the Babadook is still the better movie (even though i hated the kid, but the kid being annoying is the point of that movie, so i digress)

God, this movie was amazing. I understand how some people may not find it scary, maybe because they look for different kinds of horror, but with how invested I tend to get into movies and characters, I spent the whole time just mortified of the situations they encounter. So many things that still stick with me, and I saw it a week ago. I can't understand how anyone could say this is a bad movie from a technical aspect, though, because from what I've seen, every shot is composed with the utmost care. But hey, this is just all my opinion.
And if Tamara hasn't seen Little Miss Sunshine yet, she should definitely do that. Great Toni Collette performance and just an overall joy of a movie in my opinion.

Your reviews are getting increasingly better as you go along. This movie really affected me when I saw it. Now, two days later, it's even more traumatic. When I think about certain scenes, my ears feel the same pressure you get, whenever you're on a flight. I have no idea why. I haven't been affected by a horror movie like this, since I was a kid.
And honestly, the fact that the trailer....SPOILER - DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN...is so misleading in the best way possible, made Charlie's death all the more horrific. I thought she was going to be the character we followed all the way through. When that gut-wrenching scene happens, especially how the director chose to reveal the aftermath, I had no idea where this movie was going. That, for me, made it ten times more terrifying to me.
The best way I can describe this movie is, it's like being trapped in sleep paralysis, but worse. It's like sleep paralysis, while experiencing the death of a loved one, all at once. It's the most uncomfortable experience I've ever had, while watching a movie.

When I saw it, it was like the whole theater just wanted to talk the whole time. They were laughing at scenes that should've been taken seriously. It was a complete mess, but as for the movie, I loved it. The best way to describe it is unnerving, and I love that in horror. That's the type of feeling that lasts inside of you, and almost makes you feel like you are part of the movie. Toni Collette(sp?) is an amazing actress, you should definitely binge watch The United States of Tara, it's basically this movie without the horror aspect.

    Always love hearing your opinion!
I have to say I disagree a bit for this one...I really enjoyed the first 2/3 or so of the film, but i just didn’t find it scary! It was, however, really compelling and interesting. Toni Colette was so freaking incredible, as were her two kids. The way it was shot was also really artful and thoughtful and the dollhouses were such a great touch.
The last part was really disappointing for me, which sucks to say! The “twist” (if you can even call it that) was so predictable and from the point where it “revealed” itself, I just felt it was too cliche. Especially from what I’ll call the “desk face” scene...I just wasn’t scared :/
I don’t think I could ever compare it to the babadook, which in my opinion was the WAY superior film. Stylistically it reminded me of The Shining.
    Agree/Disagree?

  • Gift Egbelu
    Gift Egbelu 6 months ago

I hated this movie. It was so long, and pointless. Like, none of the foreshadowing mattered. And the payoff was so terrible. I think I laughed at more scenes then I jumped. The tongue click was good...but ultimately pointless. Even the title doesn't even seem right for this. Ugh...I don't get what people found enjoyable about it. It was 2 hours of build up.

    • Gift Egbelu
      Gift Egbelu 5 months ago

Fonzii word, man. Word. Perspective is the value of art. It leads to some interesting convos for sure.

    • Fonzii
      Fonzii 5 months ago +3

Gift Egbelu Correct, my first response was about you looking at it from a surface level. You responded, I got your response, I understood it. Why should I defend my first point further if I know that you just proved it wrong.
Well, actually, I wasn't prepared for how the ending would turn out. Pretty much a lot of audiences didn't. I don't think that it made the journey meaningless. In fact, I think I only pieced it completely after watching. But hey, we all have different brains that function differently. Got to hand it to you, your outlook is different from mine but I can see where you're coming from.

    • Gift Egbelu
      Gift Egbelu 5 months ago

Fonzii The initial premise of your response was that I, me, did not get the movie and that I was looking at it from a surface level. Not about whether my interpretation was viable to others, it was about my lack of comprehension...which is so completely entirely untrue. So whether or not another audience can understand it or not, is irrelevant to this discussion...because you pointed at me. So, I’m not going to expound on that more.
The one thing we can agree on is that the ending was completely too spoon-fed, which killed almost all the good will for the movie. They actually gave you the ending before you got to the ending when the main woman found the book in the box of belongings. Literally all the foreign spell words on the wall, the vision of the grandmother and the fire in the yard, the little girl popping up for the sun, the pillows with the names on it, etc , none of that really added anything because they spelled out the ending for you with that book. It ultimately made the journey meaningless, because they gave it to you.

    • Fonzii
      Fonzii 5 months ago +2

Gift Egbelu So, what you're saying is:
      1. It's so easy to understand even if there are audiences who couldn't understand the entire thing that they just laugh at moments.
      2. The ending had no connection whatsoever even if it kinda does.
The ending does have a connection but the problem is, they could've just let the ending be left to interpretation. But that's my opinion.

    • Gift Egbelu
      Gift Egbelu 6 months ago

Fonzii this isn’t a surface level movie. The foreshadowings were not needed for the ending. The movie is stupid easy to understand. If you challenge me, I can tell you every single foreshadowed point that meant nothing to the end. It’s so poorly done, you have to feign complexity in it. It’s bad

Shouldn't have been a horror film. It should have been a psychological thriller/drama. The best parts of the movie were before all the supernatural shit started to happen. Since I knew going in that's it's a horror movie, the supernatural plot wasn't as jarring but if I went in totally blind I would have thought it was a family drama for the first hour and a half and it was great. Supernatural part just took me out of it, the first half was so intense and real, when it started going into fantasy stuff it just deflated everything for me.

I feel like people need to discern SCARY from DISTURBING.
Because this movie was disturbing but not scary. I could name a dozen movies scarier than Hereditary inCLUDING Sinister.
I'd rather watch "the big death scene" over and over in this movie while painting a pentagram in blood than any of those super 8 films in Sinister again.
But is Hereditary Bad? No not really. To me it's alright but that's just on a first viewing. Might need to see it again.

The three categories of the horror story: Terror, Horror, and Gross Out. I can definitely see why you would say Hereditary is “horrifying” and Sinister is “terrifying” (at least those super 8 films)....Hereditary definitely works hard to disturb the audience. Very emotionally hardcore. I think the reason the Exorcist is still considered one of the greatest of all time is because it successfully plays on all three categories throughout the film.

this movie was just the right amount of disturbing, enough that I'm surprised it's out in wide release and not in some indie theaters. it reminded me of repulsion, and *spoiler alert* rosemary's baby towards the end.

Why am I the only person who wasn't rattled by this movie? Yes, there was one incident - we can all guess which one - that surprised me, because of the trailers. But for the most part I thought it was just okay. Some of the visuals were okay. Toni Collette never gives a bad performance. But I couldn't stand the brother, so that posed a problem for me. And I just felt like there was nothing there that I hadn't seen before. It wasn't BAD by any stretch but I found it rather meh.
