Dell Alienware's Aurora desktop and gaming monitors Hands-On

  • Published on Aug 19, 2019
  • It's been a pretty busy year for Alienware, but Dell's boutique gaming brand isn't showing any signs of slowing down soon. At Gamescom this year, the company is unveiling a slew of new gaming hardware, both in a bid to throw in new specs and bring its revamped "Legend" industrial design to more products.

Man, like you know. Im getting a new computer, and my dad is helping me find a good computer that is 1000 or less. I've recently found the computer in this review, i wanted to see how good it ran. Even though it said how much fps it ran on some games. I want to see other games that it can run. But this review was not good. My dad watched this review, hes a computer expert, and you didnt even like tell that much about it really.

The Dell Alienware OLED is pretty much the most worthless screen released. At least 4000 dollars, hdmi 2.0b, no hdr (what), no g sync module. It isn't even going to be on the g sync compatibility list as soon as the LG C9 oled. A Tv that offers true hdr and has HDMI 2.1 and is less than half the price for a 65 inch model. Dell should cancel the OLED screen because there is literally zero reason for anyone to own it.

I have an aurora R6 I am not trying to bash Alienware but let's be for real for a minute. Remember the last monitor that Alienware came out with with g-sync you did not pay an extra cost for that if you had a AMD card. But if you got a Nvidia card and you wanted that same monitor you are going to pay a hundred bucks more to get the g-sync to run with the Nvidia card with no that's scandalous. Now they got this monitor for $4,500 straight shenanigans I like Alienware but it's way too much.

$4,500 for Oled, thanks but I’ll pass with LG’s C9 55” or LG E8 of I can find one 55”-65” and even at $1,500-$2,000. Can also get 120hrz at 2k resolution which is fine with no motion lag and 12ms response time. Seen it run Doom, if it runs Doom smooth then bring on everything else! Waiting to play Division 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 when that comes out, vacation time!!!!

Ice Lake isn't coming to desktops anytime soon. The ones that Intel is about to release are for tablets and ultrabooks. In fact we might not see an Ice Lake CPU come out on desktop at all. The 10th gen for desktops will probably just be a rehashed 14nm coffee lake CPU with 3% improvements.

I've never been more sad to put money back in my pocket in my life. A premium 4K monitor in 2019 without HDR + no HDR & HDMI 2.1 when the TVs the panel closely derives from has both for 2.6 times cheaper (LG's OLED C9 TV)? This is DOA.
They even laughably added FreeSync instead of FreeSync 2 & G-Sync when an overwhelmingly amount of 4K enthusiasts/gamers use Nvidia GPUs (RTX w/ NVLINK the best means of leveraging this monitor's capabilities today). This monitor can't even connect to their flagship laptops which it easily should have w/ Thunderbolt 3
The CES prototype had HDMI 2.1 & HDR, so the management + research team behind the downgrade dropped the ball. They would've been better off delaying till next year and replacing the USB ports to Thunderbolt 3 via USB4.
People buy monitors for 4+ years; all the core I/O & characteristics of this device is obsolete after this year with the decisions they've made besides its response time & 4K@120hz (all innate things the panel was capabile of anyway). . People can't even maximize current gen consoles; next gen consoles will use HDMI 2.1 & Dolby Vision HDR unapologetically just like the Xbox One X.

    • lilkwarrior
      lilkwarrior 2 months ago

@Humza Uddin Yes, it's even more DOA when LG OLED C9 TVs now have G-Sync using the SAME panel & 2.6 times cheaper + HDMI 2.1 + Dolby Vision HDR.

    • Humza Uddin
      Humza Uddin 2 months ago

so your issue revolves specifically towards the monitors and not the tower?

I have the previous AW 34 inch ultrawide, used with a 2080ti it is pretty sweet. Might get the 27 inch for the second PC (mainly used for VR) and swap out the 1070 for a 2080 as I would like to try 240Hz and I am not convinced that you can tell the difference between that and 120Hz.

    • Cubic Meter
      Cubic Meter 22 days ago

@Malcolm Swoboda that is bullshit, the moderate gaming laptops are a lot, and I mean a lot more expensive than a ps4 or xbone and can't run shit at 4k, plus with that kind of money you can get a really good desktop...

    • Malcolm Swoboda
Malcolm Swoboda 2 months ago +2

Its overkill today, for its price, for a casual gamer. The casual gamer with a budget is now better off with a console (as usual) or buying a moderate gaming laptop that they will also use for other utility. If you're anywhere hardcore, sure a desktop gaming PC is still perfectly appropriate, but its finally no longer the only option. If this was the early 2010s then it'd be a different matter. Most gamers can't and won't learn and take the effort to upgrade parts on a PC - full stop. The complainers here are a niche in a niche.

    • Ed Fort
      Ed Fort 3 months ago

@GAMEISTIC looks to be semi-glossy, meaning it has a relatively light anti-glare film applied, which is most likely the case as this is a panel used in OLED TV's on the market that use a similar film. Semi-glossy filter is not too bad, since it's somewhat half-way in between full mirror-like glossy and full matte.
The thing is, you'd still have to control your ambient light and that's the key in having a great display experience.

      GAMEISTIC 3 months ago

@Ed FortThe monitor in this video is a glossy one or matt one?

    • Ed Fort
      Ed Fort 3 months ago

@GAMEISTIC There's plenty of videos on the web comparing matte vs glossy displays, but I can't find one right now that shows adequately the differences in image quality.
Bottom line is that matte screens have a fuzzy-appearing filter placed in front of them and that makes colors more faded, it reduces contrast and color saturation and makes the image more hazy and sparkly, depending on how 'aggressive' the filter is made, i.e. how much it is intended to reduce reflections in high ambient light situations.
Fact is, matte screens have their uses in office work and high ambient light situations but, if you care about image quality, you should control your environment's light level and go with a glossy screen.
Trouble is that manufacturers have stopped offerring glossy options almost completely and now put anti-glare filters on almost all TV's and monitors...
