HoloLens 2: inside Microsoft's new headset

  • Published on Feb 24, 2019
  • Microsoft is making a new HoloLens headset, called HoloLens 2. But, it's only getting sold to companies, not consumers. Meant for professionals who work with their hands and not on computers, the new HoloLens has an improved field of view and doesn’t clip as much as the original. Dieter Bohn visited Microsoft’s campus to get an early look at the new HoloLens 2 headset.

I guess devices like the new hololens will change the way we will work with computers in the near future. Think of all the possibilities: Image-, speech- and gesture recognition!

Did they talk to you about using it simply to replace monitors for Windows 10? I realize how BORING that sounds but for the aging generation for IT Pros it could go along way to saving eye strain from looking at monitors at a set distance all day. To project your 'workspace' out to infinity not to mention increasing your productive space would be amazing. To be able to designate a 'work space' right in front of you (essentially where your monitors would be) and to have the option to have that space stationionary in space so you can expand that work space around your focal point would be epic. Or for support situations out of your desk, bring your headset with you into a data center to work on a server. Spacial awareness capability could even HELP you locate the server in xyz rack and the mount location (dreaming).

This is another step in getting every citizens rental scan. Once they have everyone's on record they will probable want to start forcefully chipping everyone and go with a cashless society. Bunch of wankers.

Current problem with this concept is it's very passive system.I mean everything you look at is a static thing that you have to manipulate or move around.Interacting with tactile or fluid views is the real challenge as that's where the consumer market is.Gaming for example, stuff moves around viewing 3D in 2D (like TV) that's the immediate money maker which begs the question ,is it that much better than adapting an iPad as the viewing tool?.Does the mass market WANT the biggest and baddest or do the professionals NEED it.Theory and practical are two different things.

By feeding Hololens with money, usage and feedback from enterprise. Microsoft will have a much smaller demographic and wealthier one who will use it more frequently. This will in turn help it get cheaper, smaller and more usable software for consumers.

I don't understand why they are moving away from consumers. Think about the use-cases for this for entertainment.
This could easily replace your TV, and multiple people could watch separate "TVs" on the same couch. Think about using it to assemble your Ikea furniture. Think about using it as a HUD for directions while driving, biking or even walking.

They're doing it (for now) because it isn't consumer-friendly enough and won't be so soon, that's it. Of course the risk is that similar enough tech is taken by another company and sold successfully to consumers.

I don’t want biometric scans for authentication. Passwords, pin codes, these things work fine. I don’t want records of my biology stored for Microsoft to do ... whatever with.

I am already talking to TECH investors about integrating the use of this specific technology to bring change to a multi trillion dollar industry. This just hits the tip of the iceberg as a pioneering instrument for the future development of game changing strategy for production. Well done.

Nice idea! I definitely can use this device in my job. I work with festival decoration. It can be an amazing tool for live paint performances, connected with sketchAR app. I usually use light projector to sketch the painting in the right position, but the hololens make possible to the artist to see what it's going to be painted in real time, and improve the quality of the final work! I can't wait to test it. Thanks for the video! 😀

I thouhh the point of this one was they were going to make it more accessible to the consumer, they did this by adding an additional $500 to the price....good move. On top of this you have an apple watch so you are wrong.
