  • Microsoft is making a new HoloLens headset, called HoloLens 2. But, it's only getting sold to companies, not consumers. Meant for professionals who work with their hands and not on computers, the new HoloLens has an improved field of view and doesn’t clip as much as the original. Dieter Bohn visited Microsoft’s campus to get an early look at the new HoloLens 2 headset.

Nice idea! I definitely can use this device in my job. I work with festival decoration. It can be an amazing tool for live paint performances, connected with sketchAR app. I usually use light projector to sketch the painting in the right position, but the hololens make possible to the artist to see what it's going to be painted in real time, and improve the quality of the final work! I can't wait to test it. Thanks for the video! 😀

Most of the things that are being shown off seem like they could be pulled off by VR as well, so the only real applications I can see of this would be as a HUD for doctors, and for training for soldiers (which as far as I'm aware is the main way it's normally used for). When the tech gets cheaper, maybe soldiers could find use for it in the field.
Engineering stuff seems like it would be just as easily pulled off by some autocad like application in VR, which is way cheaper right now with WMR headsets going for $200

I’d say you can’t even compare them because they all have different uses. AR simulates intractable holographics in the real world, MR simulates digital replacements of physical objects, but VR completely shuts out the real life environment to create its own experience. This will become even more true if full dive VR is invented.

This would be amazing for jobs such as aircraft mechanic's. Aircraft electricians usually are constantly referencing wire diagrams while troubleshooting problems, this would enable them to have the diagrams integrated with what they are looking at. Amazing potential!

I'm getting skeptical with AR. We've seen google glass, magic leap and 1rst gen hololens fail or have no impact on consumer level. Of course you could do all those crazy stuff for specialised applications, if you throw millions at it. For now I just don't see the need of AR for the average consumer.
