Bibimbap (비빔밥) & Dolsot-bibimbap (돌솥비빔밥)

  • Today’s recipe is bibimbap, a super-popular Korean dish you might have heard about already! It’s made of a bowl of rice, sautéed and seasoned vegetables (namul: 나물), a bit of hot pepper paste (gochujang: 고추장), and usually a bit of seasoned raw beef, too (yukhoe: 육회).
You can add captions here: thexvid.com/user/timedtext_vide...
    Full recipe: www.maangchi.com/recipe/bibimbap
Bibim (비빔) translates as “mixed,” and bap (밥) means “cooked rice,” so bibimbap literally means “mixed rice.” Before eating it you’re supposed to mix everything all together.

My husband and I love Korean food so I tried to use your recipe and it was successful. The results were always delicious, so every time I want to learn a new Korean recipe, I go directly to Maangchi recipe and it never failed me!!. Now, Korean food is the regular menu at our table, I always have a stock of kimchi and Korean noodles. Thank you for sharing it with us, hope to know more about your recipe. More power and God bless!

My husband grew up eating his Korean mother's wonderful cooking and she left big shoes to fill. I have tried in the past to make Korean dishes for him using written recipes and failed miserably. I started watching your videos recently and you explained everything so well, I thought I might be able to follow along. I am proud to report that I made this bibimbap for him tonight and he ate every bit! He was so happy with the taste that he took pictures and sent him to his mother (who will like that I am trying to cook the food he loves for him). It gives me confidence to try some of the other dishes you have posted. Thank you so much, I have one happy husband tonight!

Your bibimbap philosophy is so beautiful, it made me cry! I love bibimbap so much! The first time I tried it, I was with my best friend and we went to this little Korean restaurant that was run by an elderly Korean couple. When we entered, they were watching Goodbye Mr. Black and as we were chatting, we were getting more invested in the show. There weren't any subtitles but we were still able to grasp the gist of it, to the point where we asked mamma (the wife/cook) to play the next episode. Afterwards we stayed and chatted with them, and the husband thought maybe we understand Korean because we were genuinely interested in the show. When we went again, we'd eat and then chat with the wife and her son afterwards, and it felt like we were visiting our Korean granny instead of going to a restaurant.

Even Koreans don't put all the ingredients. Just putting what you have and replacing some of the ingridients is common. There could be so many varieties.
Restaurants or diligent moms would put almost all the ingredients in the clip but not me :)

This is my favorite dish in the whole world. I worked for Japanese restaurant many years ago and the owner was this tough hilarious old Korean woman, and after lunch or dinner shift she always closed the store and fed us korean dishes. She taught me how to make bibimbap (and I bought a dolsot!) and my other favorite dish sujabi :) It was so nice for her to not just treat us like employees but like family and to feed us every day (hah she wouldn't let you leave unless your belly was full!!). You remind me of her so much! I love watching your videos and I love your happy personality :) Congrats on all of your success!

Back in the old days it was one of the reasons why Korean marriage was so toxic on the women's side since they left most of the housework to women(+high chance of mothers in law roasting them to be restless and better). The culture's mostly gone now but for some it's still a problem during the traditional holidays since some old people still expect women to prepare shit ton of traditional foods and serve in their groupings and ancestral rituals. Since Korean traditions are male-centric, wives had to break their back serving their husband's family, topping it with occational roasting to only make it worse. Obviously, blame mostly went to their husbands for being a shitty moderator, and it's still one of the major reasons why Korean devorce rates spike during these period.
Just throwing in some other perspective since some seem to fantasize too much about those 'wholesome traditional food'. Bibimbap is even considered easy compared to other Korean foods since it's basically just side dishes they already have with just an egg on top.

Hello Miss Maangchi! I always love Korean food and have followed your channel for more than 10 years. I love your recipes and you always made everything look so simple and easy. I wanted to make bibimbap for a long time but I know it will take a lot of work to prepare all the side dishes. After watching this video, I will definitely try your bibimbap recipe soon. I have one quick question: for the hot pepper paste you use at the end, is that just the regular hot pepper paste you buy from the Korean grocery store or do you mix it with something else? I am always wondering about it because I know they sell bibimbap sauce in Korean grocery stores. Thank you!

I made my own first good tasting bibimbap today. Tasted so wonderfull. I knew it from Korean restaurants and tried a couple of times, but never managed to get the excact taste yet. But thanks to the advice of a Korean who did spot me picking the wrong gochujang sauce brand when I was shopping Asia food, I finally got a good quality gochujang sauce. Very crucial. Just get the ones made in Korea (he told me this, and he seems to be right!). It really makes a great difference.

    Maangchi, love your tubes!
I have a Korean supermarket near my home, I like to try out various kinds of Korean dry veggies and herbs, dry fishes and sauces, but I don't know the how-to. Could you do a few series introducing those typical Korean dry foods, especially dry fishes? Thanks in advance.

Vegetarians can substitute baked or fried tofu instead of meat. Cut in cubes or your favorite size and marinate overnight with soy sauce, garlic, and honey, just like Maangchi did the meat, only more liquid. You can either add like that to the bowl or bake or sauté first if you like a firmer texture. I am definitely trying this recipe!

I put the meat seasoning on portobello mushrooms. I was miffed that I didn't have eggplant as I wanted to serve the mushrooms as mushrooms. Hubby loved it.
