Except I'm stuck with a 1000 Gsync monitor, so even if I wanted to support AMD, it still doesn't make financial sense.

This won't matter. Remember how trounced was nvidia was in the 4000-5000 series, no one bought them compared to nvidia. It just won't matter.

  • Mr. Blunt
    Mr. Blunt 6 hours ago

Why when AMD does something SLIGHTLY right, everyone gives extra compliments like they did something bigger than they did but didn't? And when Nvidia goes beyond, people buy their products but give half assed compliments and seem less impressed? I just feel like AMD can add one extra GB of VRAM to their card and everyone will go on a parade for it whereas Nvidia can go double or triple the distance and it seems like Nvidia has to work EXTRA hard just to get an "eh that's good" out of people? People are so fucking weird.

You call this competition.. man you’re all about fluff... 699 is the price of a 2070... and nvidia will counter with a driver that upps the performance.. Amd is still way behind the 2080ti and the rtx.... maybe actually test it instead of going by what a manufacturer does.

Future will only increase it no doubt of it, so yeah as always AMD is more future proof, can't wait to buy it as I have freesync monitor.

Linus, great article again. I share your sentiment that competition is good. But...
There are two things awkward here.
1.) RTX is way too overpriced
2.) Radeon VII might be good, but is still VEGA, not Navi
    3.) no Raytracing
So buying an old chip basically. What are your thoughts.

  • naveen gupta
    naveen gupta Day ago

AMD just made a case for buying the RTX 2080. If you are stupid enough to consider paying 700 USD for this card, maybe you will smell the coffee and shell out a little more to get the much more capable RTX card.

So let me get this straight, Vega 64 wasn't a competitor when it was comparable to the 1080 over a year later, but now we have the Vega VII which is competitive with the 2080/1080Ti (mind you almost 2 years later) and we are ecstatic? I thought Vega 56 + 64 were good cards (and still are), but we're really changing the narrative here for what?

  • Direnta

Stop saying it's "expensive", it is 700$ new card with 1080ti performance with 16 gb of HBM memory, that's not expensive. That's reasonable pricing.

They have closed the gap yes, but its still a big step to do. Even they dont have Rtx, they dont have dlss and that stuff!
Yeah, many of you will argue that rtx is bullshit and noone need it. congrats! If everyone thought like that we would still Play 2D games without online Multiplayer etc.
Amd had to Go further, pushing nvidia more so we as consumers can get better prices!

at 699.00 its not competitive. Especially since you can buy a 2080 for 699.00 and get RT tech.. Plus some cards are now come with two "AAA" shooters... Anthem and BFV... if you could call anything EA makes AAA....

Why is Linus happy about a product that barely beats a card released nearly 2 years ago that is also cheaper based on MSRP? You can also still find 1080ti close to MSRP if you actively look for deals (because I know someone would mention that). If Radeon VII was $500 it would be worth it but the price is too high and just continues the bad trend set by Nvidia. Doesn't look like competition is doing us any good yet.

Contratulations AMD - I'm an Nvidia user but I think this GPU is really a great deal !
I'm looking for a card with much memory and therefore I didn't bought a RTX 2080 - only 8 Gb (Ti version is overpriced, therefore no option).
But this thing for 700 bucks has 16 GB of RAM with 1000 Gb/sec transfer rate. Fantastic !
This would be an option if it really can keep up with an 2080 in terms of framerate and power consumption !

How ignorant most people be? AMD job is not to lower down prices, it's their job two make money. They simply saw what Nvidia was doing and said screw it we can do it too while still looking like a better deal like they always do. Why make your cards cheaper when people will not reward them for it?

  • FaZe Gamer
    FaZe Gamer 2 days ago

My pc is all out AMD. i prefer ryzen because it cost less than nvidias cpus and puts out a similar power when it cost half the price. Also i have nvidia fanboys saying gtx 1080 ti is best because it cost A LOT and it can 500+ fps on minecraft LOL and the nvidia boss got salty at amd for releasing the new card.

  • Alessandro Poeta
    Alessandro Poeta 2 days ago

Should I buy a GPU when the best features that it have are just useful for content creation and absolutely useless for gaming? 16GB again with HBM2? Really? So useless for gaming. For gaming only a RTX 2080 is the best you can get, and we talking about the same price, at the same price 2080 win over Radeon VII. AMD showed that is becoming more agressive about price, so, no, AMD will not save us.

  • Alexander Love
    Alexander Love 2 days ago

If they would have done this for $200 less it would be great. Not no they had to match Nvidia's pricing and don't have the Ray Tracing as an excuse for the price. Not a game changer and the 2080 Time is still faster

  • Keith Everson
Keith Everson 2 days ago +1

Where's the mid to low-end? AMD, that's your bread and butter. I'll pay $200 for a RX 580 all day long. It's a stellar experience for the price, but it's starting to show it's age. Nvidia just decided, based on price at least, that xx60 cards are no longer the king of low end. $350 "MSRP". Okay, whatever. Then AMD pulls this crap out. 1 card, that's about as good as the middle of Nvidia's stack, but with none of the (admittedly less useful for now) fancy new bells and whistles. We don't need a card almost as good as the top end for top end prices. My entire rig costs less than this video card. AMD, you already had a crappy, over-priced also-ran in your original Vega cards. I want something for solid 1080p with the option of 1440 that will work for the next few years. Are those of us that consider $250 new for a video card to be a good budget choice just consigned to the used market moving forward? Sure, there's rumors flying that Nvidia will also release an 1160 or something, and AMD hinted there were more coming later, but the way everything is trending, the low end will no longer exist. We'll have APU's, then straight into the $350-$400 range.

  • Luis Fernando Muñoz López

thank you AMD? this expensive S---- only shows how little AMD is interested in gamers. they are focused on the console market. and PC gamers can go and FTS
