When in Malaysia, you must sample Roti John, a MALAYSIAN STRET FOOD which is both popular and tasty! We sample Roti John at Roti John Titiwangsa arguably one of the best Roti John stalls in Kuala Lumpur. Roti John is basically an omelette sandwich. A soft baguette or French stick is halved and slapped onto egg which is cooking on the grill which then coats the bread. The eggy bread is then filled with shredded cabbage, mayonnaise, a protein of your choice such as tuna, chicken, and beef, cheese and a range of other condiments. The sandwich is then cut into pieces and topped with fries. SO. GOOD.
How does it get its name? The story goes that in the 1960s an Englishman asked for a burger from a hawker. With no burgers on offer the hawker crafted a sandwich filled with mutton, eggs and onion. All foreigners were referred to as ‘John’ and so he handed the sandwich to ‘John’ saying: "Here’s your roti, John” and voila! The Roti John was born.
A must try when in Malaysia!
    Where we ate:
    Roti John Titiwangsa
199, Jalan Datuk Keramat, Kampung Datuk Keramat, 54000 Kuala Lumpur
    Open Monday to Saturday
    6:00pm to 2:00am
    Halal

There is one suggestion here about a food you should looking out for, if you haven't heard it and stumbled upon it yet. It is East Coast Peninsula Malaysia dish, with slight different between Terengganu and Kelantan varieties as in almost other dishes. Ketupat Sotong - Squid 🦑 with sticky riceI could see from 3-4 videos that I'd watched you out sampling foods, that you both like rice very much. And coconut to 😀So here is a dish made up of Seafood + Rice + Coconut (in a broth/soup/stew kind of gravy)Squid (Sotong) gives you the protein, the fishy flavour. The rice (beras pulut) gives you the rice flavour (what else could rice gives you? 😀). Coconut broth gives you creamy flavour. The herb - halba - gives you a little bit of bitter taste, a slight bitter taste that added to the overall flavour. It's not bad bitter but good bitter taste. So try it out if you haven't yet, and if you're still in Malaysia. Have nice foodie times, both of you.

    • Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena  2 years ago

Great explanation tomie myspace! Thanks for that. You're right, we have found that sotong tends to be priced quite high but as you so rightly say it's because it's seasonal which makes it rarer. The fishing technique sounds fascinating- we'll look it up 😄 Cheers, Sheena

    • tomie myspace
tomie myspace 2 years ago +1

In DEFENDING all the Squid 🦑 (Sotong) dishes 😀, sometimes the steep prices could jeopardise or kill the savoury tastes of it.
The downside of most Sotong dishes is probably the price (the high-side of it), when comparing to other seafood 🍤 choices kilo per kilo, or piece per piece.
The squid sized a bit longer than palm, could burn your pocket, if it is not deep enough.
We couldn't and shouldn't blame the food seller at stalls/restaurants because the price of raw squid is expensive (esp the big one) due to partly it is seasonal. Not seasonal in getting it from restaurants because it is mostly ever-available, but seasonal in catching it out in the sea.
I'm not really sure and can't be really factual about the period here, but the fact remains that squid season is when the sea is calm and lull. I guess Feb-April.
Some using a bit of modern techniques like using spotlights to attract the squids towards the surface in order to fish it with a specialised squid hooks. Some still using old school techniques like burning dry coconut branches to make the light!
Squids are fish using hooks and lines individually as opposed to using nets.
So the pricey price of Sotongs at the stalls/restaurants is partly due to these factors.
You should watch some videos about Malaysian's squid fishing technique. It's called locally as menCANDAT sotong. So the season is called Musim Mencandat Sotong.
P.S.: I cant understand from food aspect why pressed dry sotong ever made because it is not tasty at all, and you'll tend to need a lot of jaw muscles to eat it, let alone finish it. But I understand the aspect of preserving for later uses, back in the old times when you don't have freezers and chillers.

Love your efforts in trying to tell the story behind the foods (name etc). It's a little food history! And your fine sprinkles of Malay words with right pronunciation (Jumpa lagi, Sangat sedap). Malaysian loves to use sauces liberally in any foods to the extent that it might waste the real taste of the main ingredients (beef, chicken etc) and the processes goes with preparing it (marinating etc). It's like they never think about it, about spoiling the real intended taste of the food. Chilli sauces, Tomato sauces, Soy sauces (call ketchup or Kicap locally), and now Black Pepper sauces. It adds tastes to the foods, but sometimes its too overpowering, although still tastes good, and it hides/kills the real intended taste of the food. Like peanut sauce for Satay/Sate. Satays are meticulously prepared individually according to the proteins - beef, chicken, sometimes venison, rabbit or fish, or even entrails!!! But when you dipped all the different Satays into sweet peanut sauce, almost all tasted the same (my exaggeration 😀) because of the overpowering flavours of the peanut sauce. In Malaysia, people eat everything, and they will ask for Chilli Sauces. Even eating pizzas they will ask "Chilli Sauce, por favor"PS: I really enjoy watching your videos. Not to overpowering in flavours, but enough to entice me to like it and ask for more. Keep on marinating our mind with your special preppy stuffs 😁👌

Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to write tomie myspace. Love your use of the sauce metaphor 😄😝 Malaysians really do love their sauces don't they?! I'm a sauce fiend too so I don't mind it so much hahahahahaha. And you're right with the satay I like to have one with sauce dunked in it and then the next one just plain in order to taste the marinated meat better! We're so glad you're enjoying our videos. We are learning so much about the food culture here in Malaysia and are having a ball whilst we're at it. You guys live in a food paradise! Nice videos of my country's food. Perhaps you can try Chinese style steamboat in KL next. One of the best steamboat is the Coco Steamboat at Old Klang Road. They have many outlets but Old Klang Road one is the biggest outlet. Must order the awesome Pork Bone soup base here. Can visit my blog post for more details www.huislaw.com/2015/03/coco-steamboat-at-old-klang-road/.

    Hey there Thomas and Sheena!
I've only had Roti John once or twice back in college, but it never really tickled my fancy. However, seeing you guys gobbling down those rotis, whetted my appetite and I feel like joining in the action lol. I will probably be grabbing a Roti John the next time I see someone making it. Your video on Laksam, which was equally great, gave me the idea of suggesting a really wonderful place that you guys ought to go to the next time you're in Seremban. The cook and her restaurant were featured on Gordon Ramsey's food tour of Malaysia some years back. He went there to learn how to cook Rendang. The place is called Auny Aini's Garden Cafe and she serves some of the best Malay delicacies you could find. Her Lemang is what I'm recommending and also her Rendang. Those are the two main favourites apart from Ketupat that Malays love to have during Aidil Fitri. You won't be disappointed as her place is really quite beautiful and the food is just totally awesome.

😝 let us know how your next Roti John experience goes Academic Theologian! Thanks so much for that great recommendation mate. We have heard about Aunty Aini's restaurant and we actually watched that Gordon Ramsey episode! She seems like such a character. I hope we can make it there soon. It really does sound worth visiting and we totally need more lemang and rendang in our lives! So glad you're enjoying the videos mate. Thanks for watching and for all the support 👊 Cheers, Sheena
