There are two types of people out there:
Those who actually own an E60 M5 and haven't had any problems what so ever
And, those who have never even driven one, yet parrot their "unreliability" at every given chance.

People don't seem to understand that if you buy a cheap shitbox, you're getting a cheap shitbox. In addition, even on good cars regular maintenance things happen. Throttle actuators fail. It's a $600 part. So what. Change it and move on. The SMG transmission doesn't need to be swapped out to cure an issue. There is documentation online miles long about what various components cause which failures. You can buy the parts and change them out. You don't need an entire transmission, ever. An entire brake job costs $1K now. A new clutch and flywheel kit, under a grand. Rod bearings either fail or they don't. It's not a ticking timebomb like boy racer teens will warn you. If you do nothing but cold engine 8,000rpm burnouts, you'll spin a bearing. No shit. It's 10W60 oil. It takes 15 minutes to fully warm up. What is so difficult here? Hello... F1 engine...? There are literally DIYs everywhere for every single thing on this car, and parts are cheap now. You need ZERO special tools or crazy equipment to own and maintain these amazing machines.

In two years or less, the V10 M5 will become the new "It Car" that was the best and V10 and N/A and last of its kind blah blah blah, and well sorted examples will bring premiums upward of $30K. I watched literally the same thing happen with the E39 M5.

For now, I'll keep driving and enjoying mine. It's been a very uneventful 5+ years of unmatched driving pleasure.

  • David Cars

Unreliable, for sure. My 2009 M6 V10 (same engine and SMG tranny as this M5) had just over 18 000 miles and mostly careful driving when it lit up dashboard with errors: Engine Fault, which went into limp mode, so it was idle control valve / actuator $900 + throttle actuator at $1000 each (1 each per bank, so x2) + labour! Also ABS + DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) faulty, so no ABS or traction control or DSC, which dealer quoted as $2700 for parts, excl labour! Gearbox spoils this car - only works well when driving manually with left-for-down right-for-up paddles, or hand shift sequentially using gear lever, although up/down shifts feel wrong way round.

  • Dave Mellor
    Dave Mellor 7 days ago

The M5 isn’t a bad car,yes the SMG is a little sluggish out of M mode, though I think the sequential shift is the right way round, car pushes you back when accelerating, pushes you forward on the brakes lol. The biggest problem with it and, indeed, any luxury and/or high performance car,is how much it costs to start with. When it was new it would have been out the reach of most people,as it depreciated it became affordable. But it was still a top of the range car and servicing and parts still cost the same. So things are let slip, cheaper parts are used, servicing skipped. That all adds up to a gloomy future for any car. For what it’s worth,I wouldn’t buy a cheap M5,there too much trouble.

The beeping is a clock setting. every hour it beeps. Just turn the setting off. Upshifting towards you is the correct way. Family cars have it backwards.. The shifting isn't slower than what you do with manual gearbox it's just the feeling becauae you don't move the stick and instead you wait. The idrive system is logical and nice... man, just sell the car if you don't like it.

The built date 05 to mid 07 e60 m5's have lot of problems with vanos pump. SMG transmission software can be upgraded to CSL tune which gets rid of the sluggish shifts. I suggest you buy a manual transmission m5 which is much better with lot less problems. Rod bearings do need to be replaced between anywhere from 80k to 100k. S85 engine is made to run hard... doesnt mean you the rev the piss out of the engine without load.

  • Luyindama 30CM_Ofsayt

You really don't know how to use the SMG properly. It still doesn't become perfect, but much better than you make it seem.

    The shift directions:
If you accelerate, it is much more easy to pull the Lever for shifting up. Pushing the lever would be against the inertial force. The same is valid for shifting down the opposite way. (Seems you did not drive the car too long to appreciate they did it the right way)
    Automatic shifting:
Yes, the automatic shifts are not nice - but even as an american you will get used to manually shift this car by Lever or paddles and finally you will appreciate the pleasure to shift on your own instead of let the car do everything! (Remember YOU are the one, who drives and YOU should be the one, who decides when to shift - otherwise, just do not buy an M car! ;) )
If you are in higher rev ranges the shifts will be completely fine. I suggest using the second to last speed setting. (AFAIK the speed setting in manual mode will remain at the last setting. The automatic setting will revert to the standard level 2 after each start)

  • interalian

At 9:12 the gripe about the shifter being "backward"? Think about this. You're hard on the gas. 500hp screaming to redline. You need to upshift, and right now. The acceleration forces naturally help you upshift with a rearward pull. Opposite when you're hard on the brake and you want a lower gear, the braking force helps you push the lever forward. Otherwise you're always working against the forces. Quite logical.
I had an Infiniti with a slush box and its manual mode was push forward to upshift and pull back to downshift. Following the logic in the video, you're always working against the forces instead of with them. And one HUGE issue that happened to me more than once with this Infiniti: sometimes after driving for a while in manual, I'd put it back in auto, then forget I'd done so. After stopping, I'd go to upshift manually and put the trans in neutral (since it was in the auto gate, not manual). Not a good thing for the engine, as it would then rev furiously.
I appreciate that my '08 535 (with the infamous N54 twin turbo) has a manual mode in the auto shifter that works the same way as the M5.

“ I purchased a Lambo Gallardo for $20k with E-gear and over 60k miles and I’m hear to report that is sooo expensive to fix. Everything needs to be replaced! I’m shocked and will be an echo chamber for all other videos. 90% on all the bad and 10% on all the phenomenally amazing aspects of a truly amazing machine. Who should have though a $100k car retail would be costly to operate.”
Drive the car like a Manual and let off gas every time you would if you had a stick in between the two front seat!!! Get way more seat time and miles and STOP CRYING. It is a V10 PHENOMINAL ENGINE THY BELONGS IN A SUPERCAR. Also stop talking so much about money and more on the dang car!
Up is downshift bc while heavy braking you push up and while accelerating naturally you pull back. All this stuff will come to you if you drive way more before giving your review which is way closer to first impressions. Like a person, special cars take time to learn the true character. I’d rather have manual which is available but SMG III has character as II can feel each gear which has charm like a manual. Not everyone wants laser fast shift and if II do, buy another car. I like your videos but if we claim to be car guys we need to cut all the negative talk and focus on the positives, mention the negatives and be realistic on the experience as a whole. F10 is faster with fast DCT yet way less exciting bc it’s too civil. A lion that acts like a house cat is no longer a true lion.

+Keith Cannon then again a friend of mine bought an old e36 m3 which was the most unreliable vehicle he ever had, due to buying the cheapest one he could find, besides that cars like this bmw aren't made to be fixed on a budget, if there are faults on it you have to fix them not bypass them or use wire's not an old e30

These things are well known to kill the VANOS pump, eat rod and main bearings in as little as 25k miles not to mention utterly destroy their single disc clutch and the hydraulic servo system in the SMG transmission.
Other than that the car was great.
As if all of that does not cost more than the cost of one of these with decent miles today.
So yeah ...they are well known to be ticking time bombs.
There are numerous examples of cars like this.
The 2005 Audi RS4 is a brilliant car that can be had for less than 10k because the timing chain guides on the back of the engine will grenade and take out the entire engine at any moment.
1999-2007 Honda minivans eat their transmissions are 90-130k is a well known problem.
Dozens of cars are manufactured with similar ailments.
No point trying to act like they don't exist.
If you want to buy one then go for it...roll the dice!
I won't be trying my luck with any of them though!

+Keith Cannon My father's boss had one of these he bought second-hand, considering he used to take it somewhat offroad due to the roads to their depo the only thing that ever broke was the VANOS system and that was after 200000km with him basically flooring it from startup
