As a Canadian I do forget that the currency isn't 1:1, so I tend to think in Canadian dollars. And I'm always like "oh that's a little pricey" without doing the conversion. But seriously nearly $20 for a beer jam. Insane.

Butter making kits are ridiculous I think because it really is super super easy to make butter without having a major kit to do it

  • Inigo Freed
    Inigo Freed 8 days ago

there's absolutely nothing pretentious about pickles with extra stuff thrown in, the entire point is you put in the spices and flavorings you enjoy. Its more pretentious to assume there is a right way to do it. Likewise, beer flavored jam strikes me as crude, and its hard to be simultaneously crude and pretentious. Similarly, the balsamic vinegar is entirely genuine. 30 years ago when it was started, there was no sense of modern pretentiousness, and I think in Italy it would just be considered a high end good. On the other hand, both the butter making kit and the coffee tea are contrivances of modern marketing, turning a traditional practice people who actually make herb butter do regularly into an attraction. And making a statement about waste in coffee manufacture by making the worlds most expensive, least flavorful tea, out of a waste product.

When I heard “spreadable beer”.... my reaction “EWW” ...Because in the state of Wisconsin the people tend to love beer but I’m not sure if they would like this idea. Because we already have something that we serve at fairs and carnivals and it was called “deep fried beer” which feedback was 50/50.

You wouldn't consider £60 for a 30 year aged whiskey expensive, and they both loved the taste so while there is no way I'd buy it I don't see the balsamic as pretentious as you can see exactly why it exists and why it would cost that much.

I had a bottle of 10year balsamic vinegar and it's already so much tastier than the normal ones! Would love to try the 30 year one! But at the same time, I won't pay that much money for vinegar, guess I'll just substitute it by adding juice and sugar to a regular balsamic vinegar and reduce it to a thick consistency...

yes, balsamic vinegar is expensive, i live where it's mainly produced and best done, near a city in Italy called Spilamberto, near Modena(home of Maserati and close to the Ferrari factory) but keep in mind it takes 30 years(at least) to make and you have to siphon it from a lager barrel to a smaller one each year, for 30 years, it takes commitment

Butter-making is only that complex if it's flavoured butter. I made butter a few weeks ago, all I had was cream, mixer and a bowl. If one buys a cheap bowl and a cheap hand-mixer, butter can be made for around $40 (AUD - probably around 20 pounds), and you end up with a mixer and a bowl at the end (once the butter and buttermilk is stored) for future mixing projects.
Added context, 600mls of crean is $2.70 (AUD), one could probably get a cheap plastic bowl to work in for $5-$7 from either a discount shop or Kmart, and I am going on a general idea of a hand-mixer for $30. This does not account for equipment for straining the buttermilk out of the butter, potentially washing the butter (both of which may warrant a strainer and some cheesecloth), and containers for storage.
