The Ending Of Doctor Sleep Explained

  • Doctor Sleep brings Stephen King's novel to the screen in a way that both honors the author's original version of The Shining and manages to reconcile it with Stanley Kubrick's vision. The result is a film that's a sequel to two stories at once, with its own mythology and a multilayered ending.
Abra spends much of the film getting to know the extent of her own strength with the shining, and it's clear that she's quite pleased with the things she can do. During their final encounter at the Overlook Hotel, Rose tells Abra that she reminds her of her younger self, because there's a darkness in Abra that hasn't reached its full potential yet. Will the darkness start to take her over as she ages, or will she be able to handle it? As we see from the look on her face in the final shot, the film leaves it an open question.
One of the earliest scenes in Doctor Sleep establishes that even after he and his mother escaped the Overlook, young Danny Torrance was haunted by the ghosts who attacked him there. They followed him from the hotel to his home in Florida, and attempted to feed on him until Dick Hallorann taught young Danny a trick that would allow him to lock the ghosts away in boxes. Dan has kept the Overlook ghosts locked away in his own mind for years, but finally unleashes them on Rose the Hat.
The film's final scene makes it clear that, while the Overlook is gone, the ghosts are not. The woman from Room 237 has returned to haunt Abra Stone's bathroom, trying to feed on her shine now that she can't feed on Dan's. Abra clearly knows how to deal with the woman thanks to Dan's mentorship, but what about the rest of the Overlook ghosts?
When Dan and Abra meet in person for the first time, Dan explains that a lot of people have a little bit of a shine, but he's only met a handful in his life who knew how to use it. Abra is one of those people, of course, and so is Dick Hallorann. Brad Trevor, the "Baseball Boy" Abra has a vision of just before he dies, is another with an uncanny gift that he is only just beginning to understand when he's killed by the True Knot. Keep watching the video to see the ending of Doctor Sleep explained!

@Xander Shullaw Wow you really got your feelings hurt just because I didnt like the movie or in your words didnt try to understand the movie. A bit personal with the insults but whatever floats yr boat. My honest opinion is this they watered down a movie that had potential to be genuinely scarey but they did this Harry Potter cop out instead . Ok I appreciate my comment about Abra could appear mean but she belongs in a kids Et type of movie thing. The very next day after Doctor Sleep I watched Shutter Island bought for 50p on Dvd from a charity shop. Never seen it before. Now that was brilliant and quite scarey. You obviously liked Dr Sleep and that shouldn't take away your enjoyment & you forget I paid money to see it so you can forget the troll comment as you ASKED for my opinion. Thank you.

This movie was honestly my favorite movie of the year. It was so haunting, but also beautiful, in a way. The shot of Wendy and young Danny in the silence of the burning overlook was tear jerking, and I can’t get over this movie. Joker was great, so was IT: Chapter Two, but this one just gave me that same shining feel, and I can’t get over that. My moderate expections were blown away to be honest. I just wish they got Nicholson to play Jack with some de-aging technology.. ngl..

0:39 Uhm what are you talking about? That wasn't the final shot, that was a shot from like the middle of the film when she sees the baseball kid being slaughtered.
The actual ending, which doesn't seem to be explained in this video like the title suggests, is a shot of Abra going into the bathroom with the creepy lady presumably to put her in a mental box. Something that she probably learnt from Dan, as he did this in a flashback as a kid in the same manner. Which makes the story basically go full circle and might suggest that Abra will now continue life the way little Danny did after all the craziness. She's just going to continue putting monsters in boxes. The only difference would be that Abra opens up to her mom about the powers of the shining(when at the ending she admits she wasn't talking to no one, but to Dan and people go on after death), so she'll have someone who supports her by her side, so she won't become a homeless alcohol or anything like that.
Anyway, hate to say it, but Dan is probably dead, as Abra suggested(Again, people go on after death). The only way he might've survived and not gotten crazy burns on his body is if he last minute decided to be a selfish f**ker and feast upon shine to completely heal himself again and then for some reason he lies to Abra about being dead. Because why not?

A really good movie but it did leave out a lot of things from the book. Such as Danny's journey to become sober, which may not sound like much, but was very important in character development. The ending was radically different from the book as well which I totally didn't mind. I loved the book until the ending, which I thought was really weak. The movie version ending was much better. I thought both actresses for both Abra & Rose the hat did fine but their characters were not quite like the book. Firstly the True Knot did not just listen to Rose, they feared her. The only one that would openly argue with her was Crow Daddy. Both Rose & Abra were a force of nature. The Book Abra would not have run from Rose like they had her do in the movie when Danny was trying to stop her. The darkness of Abra was also much more apparent in the book. She relished in the True Knot's destruction and Danny became worried about what she might become.

The movie is a 7 but the book is a 10. One of King's best. In the book, several of the true knot leave in the middle of the night cause they know the confrontation with Abra is not going to turn out well.

It is infuriating how lazy a writer Stephen King is. He has been phoning it in since the original Shining. Nothing about this story is scary (and I read the book) except the vapid minds of the fans who like his drivel. Really? "Steam"? Is it "steam"? Is it "shine"? Eating psychic power? The characters - from It to Dr. Death - are all the same!! The stories are all the same. The message is non existent. I'm just glad I got the book for free on Audible.

  • Mike Benson

In my opinion, the ending scene of Danny and his mom (Wendy) was the most powerful. Danny's best friend inside his head was Doc. Yet Danny always relied upon his mom for keeping him safe in the real world or "reality." By the end of the movie, Danny finally faced all of the ghosts he had locked up. However, his mom's caring nature was able to overcome Danny's violent tendencies. Thus, Danny accepted his fate of burning at the Overlook Hotel and meeting with his mom again.

The weird thing is.... My very first time watching the Shining as a kid, I was definitely a bit unsettled, but was never really afraid watching it and wasn't the biggest fan. Until, only 1 week later I kept thinking about it. One month later, I still thought about it. One month turns into one year.... Which has turned into 22 years since I first watched The Shining and am still thinking about it. That is the true definition of Horror. Physiological Horror in fact. A Movie/Book/Story that lingers over your shoulder till the day you die. Sure Horror Movies can deliver it's audience jumpscare after jumpscare, which can be very frightening at that split second.......But it's only a second.....Not a week. a month. a year. a lifetime..... Most of these jumpscares will always be forgotten after a couple days. This is not True Horror.

When I watched Doctor Sleep I was a bit unsettled, but yet wasn't truly scared.....Yet it's been 2 days....and I'm still thinking about it. Honestly wanting to see it again this weekend. And I believe that is what the definition of Horror should be. Not how many seconds you can make someone jump out of their seat, but how many years and decades you can haunt their mind. I'm curious how this movie will age and I believe/hope it will age like the Shining, bad at first glance yet great over time. Mike Flanagan did a fucking amazing job! Flanagan, Aster, Eggers, and Peele have been a breath of fresh air in recent years.
