@Femme Fatale I think people get confused because he uses Yoruba a lot in his songs and rarely if ever any thing from Edo or Rivers language but he is half Edo and Rivers like you said. We can’t however deny the heavy Yoruba influence on him that you can forget he isn’t technically Yoruba. You are correct about his tribe anyway.

I love how Burna Boy is quite vulnerable in this song and shows us that it's okay for men to have feelings and cry too. Something our African society needs to be more accepting of. Men's mental health matters! Also, the song is 🔥🔥🔥Well done African Giant👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Burna has a way of adding even the most minute of social commentaries in his music. In the second verse, he mentions how he was in Port Harcourt when Soboma was killed and how his feelings were all over the place (my feelings dey swing like jangilova). Soboma was a Niger Delta militant viewed by some as a hero and others as a villain. Jangilova is the pidgin word for swings like those in playgrounds. He also mentions how at the time he was about to purchase a Toyota Corolla but now he's able to crash a Ferrari. I guess no matter the height that man reaches, we're all just humans and feel things like the next human.

For those struggling to grasp what he’s saying, I will attempt an explanation because the lyrics are fire as well.
As you can tell, it brilliantly samples Toni Braxton’s 2000 hit - wasn’t man enough.
    Intro
Chant: ‘’E don cast, Last last
    Na everybody go chop breakfast
    Shayo o
    Aye!
    Shayo o
    Igbo o (Aye!)’’
Translation: Tragedy has happened, and we all are bound to experience some heartbreak
    Verse 1
‘’You go bow for the result o
    Nothing to discuss o
Cos I dey win by default
    And without any doubt o
Omo me I be adult o
I no go fit take your
I no go fit take your insult o
Omo mind as you dey talk o
I put my life into my job and I know I'm in trouble
She manipulate my love o, hmm’’
Translation: Here, he begins with a brag. Telling his competitors that they will be astonished by his results, and that the conversation about his status is over flogged - nothing to discuss. He declares himself a winner by default and won’t take any insult from anyone. However, despite his dedication to his craft, his heart is troubled because "she manipulated his love." (The subject of this manipulation, we assume, is Stefflon Don - his now ex British girlfriend)
‘’I no holy and I no denge pose
    Like Baba Fryo
My eye o, don cry o
I need igbo and shayo (shayo)’’
Translation: Here, he states that he is not holy or sanctimonious, and won’t front like his feelings were not hurt, given how much he has cried. And because of this, he cannot stay sober, so he "needs Igbo and Shayo" (weed and alcohol) to get over the pain.
    Verse 2
‘’I dey Port Harcourt when dem kill Soboma
I dey try to buy motor, one Toyota Corolla
My feelings been dey swing like jangolova
Feelings been dey swing like jangolova
Now you crash your Ferarri for Lekki, Burna
Na small thing remain, could have been all over
My feelings still dey swing like jangolova
    Feelings still dey swing like’’
Translation: Burna recalls another heartbreak from 2010 when a freedom fighter and militant - Soboma George - from his troubled but oil rich hometown was killed. He also tries to reference how poor he was at the time, given that he was only dreaming of buying a sedan Toyota Corrolla, but a couple of years on, he got himself a Ferrari 458, which he crashed in Lagos in February 2022, as if to say, no matter your achievement or lack of, your feelings are always going to be swinging like a rollercoaster (jangolova).
‘’Ti ti, tim ba ni ke juru, e juru
Omo why to ki n fe ni suru?
Why you say I did nothing for you
When I for do anything you want me to do
Tim ba ni ke juru, e juru (e juru)
Omo why to ki n fe ni suru? (ni suru)
Why you say I did nothing for you
When I for do anything you want me to do
Maybe another time, maybe another life
You would be my wife and we'd get it right
    E don cast
    Last last
    Na everybody go chop breakfast’’
‘’Have to say bye bye o
    Bye bye o
To the love of my life
My eye o, don cry o
I need igbo and shayo (shayo)’’
Translation: Burna restates that he wont hold back on his feelings, and questions why his ex-lover insinuated that he didn't do anything for her when her wish was literally his command. He adds that maybe in another life, they will get it right, get married and live happily ever after but for now, he must let her go (Bye bye), still needing some weed and alcohol.

  • Ik Fwego!
Ik Fwego! 15 days ago +299

    *NIGERIAN PIDGIN/CREOLE TRANSLATION!*
Contrary to popular belief, this song is not solely about the heartbreak from the end of his previous relationship; it also considers the heartbreak from survivalism (politics) as well as heartbreak from an overtly materialistic point of view. Burna’s message is trials & tribulations are inevitable, so deal with them however you deem fit, e.g. Weed & alcohol (igbo & shayo).
“E don cast, last-last, na everybody go chop breakfast” ( *Translation: The truth has been exposed, and eventually, everybody will experience heartbreak* ).
    (Verse 1)
“You go bow for the result O, nothing to discuss O ‘cause I dey win by default O...
I no go fit take your insult O! Omo, mind as you dey talk O!”
The first half of verse one is pretty straightforward; he is in a boastful state of mind.
“-and I know I'm in trouble, she manipulate my love O! Hmm, I no holy, and I no denge pose like e Baba Fryo, my eye O, e don cry O” ( *Translation: Hmm, I'm not holy and neither am I a poser, word to Baba Fryo; I've been in tears because of said heartbreak) He is also conflicted about the recent breakup with his ex.* Baba Fryo is a Nigerian Galala singer known for his 1990s popular song ‘Dem go dey pose.’
    (Chorus)
“I need igbo (or igbeaux) & Shayo!” ( *Translation: I need weed & alcohol to ease the pain* ).
    (Verse 2)
“I dey Port Harcourt (Pidgin: Potakot or Pitakwa) when dem kill Soboma, I dey try buy motor, one Toyota Corolla.” ( *Translation: In 2010, I was in Port Harcourt (Burna Boy’s home city) in the process of purchasing a Toyota Corolla when Soboma, a militant for the emancipation of the Niger Delta, was killed* ). Burna Boy hails from Rivers State and touches on the survivalism, insurgency, and heartbreak his region has been embroiled in due to crude oil.
“My feelings been dey swing like jangolova” ( *Translation: My feelings were all over the place like a playground swing/equipment* ).
Now you crash your Ferrari for Lekki, Burna? Na small thing remain, it could've been all over” ( *Translation: You crashed your Ferrari at Lekki, Burna? If care was not taken, that accident would've been fatal* ). Burna Boy is cautioning himself in the third person after the recent car accident he was involved in at Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria.
“My feelings still dey swing like jangolova” ( *Translation: My feelings are still all over the place like a playground swing/equipment* ).
//This half of verse two is pretty straightforward to understand, though there are Yoruba lyrics I can't translate.//
“Why you say I did nothing for you?
I for do anything you want me to do!”
This verse sees Burna Boy questioning the falsehoods surrounding his name.
“Maybe another time, maybe another life you will be my wife, and we’ll get it right.”
He also displays sarcastic optimism regarding his recent heartbreak with Steff London.
“E don cast, last-last, na everybody go chop breakfast” ( *Translation: The truth has been exposed, and in due time, everybody will experience heartbreak* ).
“I need igbo (or igbeaux) & Shayo!” ( *Translation: I need weed & alcohol to ease the pain* ).
    - Translation & annotation by *Ik Fwego!*

My feelings been dey swing like Jangolova
Feelings been dey swing like Jangolova
Now you scratch your Ferrari for Lekki Burna
Na small thing remain, could have been run-over
My feelings still dey swing like Jangolova
    Feelings still dey swing like..
    Ti ma ni k? ju’ru, e ju’ru
Omo why ti o kin fe ni suru?
Why you say I did nothing for you?
I for do anything you want me to do
    Ti ma ni k? ju’ru, e ju’ru
Omo why ti o kin fe ni suru?
Why you say I did nothing for you?

Maybe another time, maybe another life
You will be my wife and we’ll get it right
E don cast, last last, na everybody go chop breakfast
Have to say bye bye o,
Bye bye o to the love of my life
My eye ooooh don cry o

@Chukwuma Oliseh Emeka Ouwarre Umanuforo I think it will be helpful if all black people learn pidgin english and swahili along with their official languages so we can all communicate with one another wherever and whenever we need to. One love, let's get together and feel alright 👍

@okun paul lol, "chop breakfast" doesn't come from "break up fast" though. The slang came from a clip from a Nigerian movie where the actor (Ogogo) said "gbogbo wa la ma je breakfast" meaning we're all going to eat breakfast, just at different times.

I’ve prepaid his whole album after buying this song on Apple today- he’s so good that I know I’ll love the rest. There’s no other Nigerian artiste whose songs evoke a deep response from me. His songs are true to him, authentic where he isn’t following trends in music but rather setting the trends as a true leader does. His songs aren’t pop music where his contemporaries are content to just copy and paste with catchy rhythms. Burna might be rough around the edges as some people always love to criticize him, but he’s sensitive and loves deeply though he might not show it. His music is so diverse and deep, the words thoughtful and meaningful and I know his music is timeless. You can chill and relax listening to his song at home or dance to it at the club or party. B
