In retrospect it’s probably good Jack struggled that first year. It forced to him learn and adapt to the league. He has looked simply stellar since coming back from the shoulder and he’s not done developing yet. Hard to remember that he’s just 20.

Not discrediting that Matthews is a superstar in the league and it’s definitely not his fault the Leafs are a mess, but he’s the kind of guy with all the talent in the world but only shows up to play when he feels like it and you can’t really do that especially when you’re the best player on your team.
I think it’s good for young, potential superstars to struggle early. It makes them understand that the NHL requires you to bring your best night after night, unlike youth/junior/college where you get games against far inferior opponents and can take a night off. I think it will make him hungrier and honestly, I would bet he wins a cup before a guy like Mathews sniffs a finals appearance

@whelpJack probably doesn't live in the hood in Newark or even in Newark. Most likely lives in Hoboken, the expensive part of Jersey City by Lincoln Park, PK moved to Manhattan it's not like players are limited to the city the rink is at in NJ because it's not like LA where the traffic is hours long. Also, he confirmed he is buying a house that Luke will live with him like the older players with families who buy homes in Jersey they live in the burbs 15-30mins away.

Thats why NJ & Philly have Pork Roll & it's obvious both names are used. N. NJ natives w/inflated egos argue Taylor Ham is pork rolls true name. When obviously "Taylor" is the last name to the originator of the "Ham" product. At the exaxt time ppl like my grandma & grandpa were entering America from other countries; mine came to the US on the boat from Italy & Poland. Most couldnt read/comprehend English fluently, so they viewed Taylor Ham in bigger bold lettering, saying Taylor Ham.

@Ronny Totten it also sucks coming into the league into a team that has like absolutely no other talent at the time. All the pressure on him as a 17 year old. Glad he’s grown into his game and will be a consistent 90+ point player for many years to come

Lotta talent. Hope he spends the summer in the weight room. He seemed like he’d have a couple games where he was really clicking…then get injured, etc and so he couldn’t quite build the momentum. Hope he stays healthy so we can see what he can do.

I’ve never doubted Jack would tear things up and ppl forget how young he is. He also doesn’t need to be the biggest player to be successful… he’s gonna fill out and grow normally lol but he’s someone born for it. I’ve been following him ever since I saw some random development program video and I’ve been intrigued and enamored ever since. As someone from LA ….still find myself cheering for this guy… and I have not been disappointed. I love seeing that he didn’t lose confidence bc he shouldn’t… knowing his f he worked hard enough and kept pushing… nothing could stop him. He’s definitely such a playmaker and goal scorer
He has the talent but still has a ways to go… should have played college or major junior for one season because he was not physically ready for the NHL… Still seems like he has a way to go maturity wise and physically.

Starting to be elite but was he elite his first year when he scored 7 goals or how about the second year when he scored 11 goals? No because He was a boy playing a mans game. Often injured because he was to small and weak.

Seriously I was watching the angels play with my mom… the mlb and she was talking about how they can’t celebrate really at all after a homerun… flipping their bat can cause you to get tossed or something… and she said it’s bc the pitchers would get so pissed about it and it causes a lot of drama between the two teams in this case… then I heard the stuff about the nfl and the taunting rules and more lack of celebration for an accomplishment… it makes me super thankful that I’m a hockey player and with all of the changes… this is something pretty sacred to our sport. There may be some sort of regulations on it but for the most part it hasn’t changed too much… and just another reason why it’s the best sport around lol imo anyway

I fell in love with hockey as a 21 yr old black woman from Florida…before I really watched the games the players and personalities had me tuned in to many games every night from across the continent. You’re being literal about clothes and that nba comment might have some subliminal message but when I said it it wasn’t about the clothes but getting rid of a lot of those “traditions”. That’s culture leads to scandals and they ain’t pretty that is the reason everybody doesnt watch hockey.

@CMZ exactly how long do you think rebuilds are supposed to last? For the record, Chicago went to the final in 1992 and didn't go again until 2010. Tampa Bay went in 2004, and didn't go again until 2015. Colorado last went in 2001, and hasn't gone since then despite how good they are. Rebuilds take time, and don't automatically just end after picking first overall. (If that was the case, Edmonton would've won several cups by now).

I love jack Hughes but to be honest he is very cocky and as a season ticket holder it’s kind of annoying
He is obviously skilled but I can’t see him retiring as a point per game player. Not on the same level as a Crosby, Mackinnon, or McDavid. He is put in every position, every special unit, and plays 20 plus every night. So it’s tough to say if he is any more special than Lafrennier or Kakko. His brother Quinn however is powerful, quick, and decisive.
