All 45 DLR Stops in the Fastest Time

  • So there's an unofficial 'record' time for travelling to all 45 stops on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London, of 1 hour and 53 minutes - but I'd never actually given it a go myself.
Until one morning, I woke up with the urge to do it, and headed out onto the driverless trains to see how fast I could get round ...
The 'Top Times' for the DLR challenge is here: www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubechallenge/dlrtop.htm
Other challenges are on the 'Explorer Ticket' website!

I've submitted a time of 2h 6m 12s to the person that runs the leaderboard, as they will only take it as my arrival time back at Shadwell after leaving Bank, and this it what it was! I was recording on video as i arrive, so have worked out the difference between the timestamps on the files between the start and the finish ...

I wish Manila has this extensive Metro system, the entire Manila Light Rail Transit(Line 1 with 20 station, and Line 2 that is actually a metro line than a Light Rail with 11 station) and the "Metro Rail Transit 3" that is actually like the DLR has 14 station, so 45 station.
But yeah, a few train lines and extension is under construction.

I’m old enough to remember all these places when there was nothing there, West India Quay, a quay, Pudding Mill Lane ,some tyres, and Island Gardens, the foot tunnel. Time moved on and left me there.
Wonderful scene in the Long Good Friday, Bob Hoskins at West India Quay, filmed I guess in 1979. Just sheds.

Back in the 80's when I was living in London, we tried to do the circle line pub crawl between opening at 11:00 and closing at 15:00 back then. That was a challenge. There were only certain stations that had pubs close by. Never made it though. Don't think I made it to 15:00. Too many pubs even though we had only a half pint at each but it was fun. It was on the London bucket list. Back in NZ now. I like to keep up with what's going on in London. I still think it's got to be the best transport system in the world being able to go overground, underground, bus and ferry all interconnecting. And you next challenge Mr Marshall, should you choose to accept it, the circle line pub crawl like we tried. Take someone sober to hold the camera.

Purple Trains are going to make an epic mess of this if you can use other forms of transport - could go from Canary Wharf to WA and delete a lot of doubling back and maybe use CH to CW to shortcut something.
When I used to live on the WA branch Stratford Int trains always ran on the Beckton branch, then as soon as I moved to Beckton branch they all started running on the WA branch. When I found that out I was pretty pissed as somebody who uses SI a lot I can tell you. It's also a PITA going the other way - if you start at SI and go Beckton way the Beckton train on high level always hits the station at the same time as the SI-WA branch so you always have to wait the full 10 minutes for a Beckton train. Every time they do those surveys it's my complaint every single time, they still haven't fixed it.
I'm fairly sure it changed because of all the building around where I used to live around Silvertown - the developers gave DLR a *lot* of money to improve services and instead of improving services what they did is threw Beckton branch under the proverbial bus and presumably pocketed the cash - though the development around me has done the same thing now and ABP is basically a thing now so presumably the services on Beckton branch will improve round about when I move away from the area..

    • Martin Nicholls
      Martin Nicholls 2 months ago

@High Path there's *vast* amounts of housing being built around GR - and the developers have given money to improve services so I doubt they'd be very impressed with that.

Ideally extend the Beckton line to Barking Riverside. delete the Beckton westbound routing - just a shuttle to Gallions Reach ( that is still a desolate place about time some housing was built on tesco's car park !),

    Hi Geoff:
Oh, how I miss those voices!!. The woman announcing the stations & connections, & the man with the classic "Mind the gap" (I watched a video of him recording it). I'd love to be able to live in London (or anywhere in England rather). I'll be visiting England in October, but I won't go to London this time. I'll go to Liverpool, Manchester, & maybe York. Of course, if I can get a job there, I'll visit London as often as I could. I ❤️ ENGLAND.

IDsign4U it did help a lot! But from what I’ve read, in order to get a working visa you must be employed before you travel and the visa has to issued in your country of origin, doesn’t it?

@prado Hi prado. Well I go just as a tourist, so I don't need any special visa for that. My idea is to make some contacts in any of my fields (web design, 2D &/or 3D graphic design, programming, office computing, teaching, customer service, etc.) before travelling. As far as I know, if someone hires you, you can apply for a working visa, so you can stay beyond the period the UK allows people to stay there (for us, including Brazilians, I think is 6 months). Hope that helps. Cheers.
