You mention the i5 8600k for the high end gaming pc. What about the i5 9600k? Would you pick the 9600k over the 8600k?

    • Hunter King
      Hunter King 6 days ago

+Chris Reese if you can afford it, or even wait to save up, go for the 1440p one. Your 2080 should handle that no problem and the 9600k would not have any problems keeping up, especially when oc'd. From my experience, there is a slight bottleneck with 1080p, but that definitely lowers the more you crank the details and textures. Good luck to you my dude

    • Chris Reese
      Chris Reese 6 days ago

+Hunter King I'm going to try to pick up a 144hz 1440p monitor, if I can afford it. If not, it'll be 1080p @ 144hz. Right now I have an i5 6600k oc'd to 4.7ghz. That bottleneck is real though. I can play destiny 2 no problem however with no bottleneck. But I get a bottleneck with every other game. Insurgency :sandstorm, is the worst one. Bf1 isn't to bad if I change the render resolution.

    • Hunter King
      Hunter King 6 days ago

+Chris Reese shouldn't bottleneck much if still all, especially if you plan to game at higher resolutions

    • Chris Reese
      Chris Reese 6 days ago

+Hunter King I would be coupling it with a rtx 2080.

    • Hunter King
      Hunter King 6 days ago

Don't know why he didn't mention it, but they're around the same price, with the 9600k having a bit better overclock potential. I have one, coupled with a 1080 and I love it. Definitely look into it if you're doing mostly gaming

If I have a gtx 1080 gpu, what do you think I should get for a cpu, I do not want to bottle neck my gpu, however pricing is still an important factor for me. Like will thr i5-8600k bottleneck the gpu? Cause i am kind of confused, cause i thought it would.

So is the core i5 a better option the best option for the high end gaming because of its performance compared to its price? Like do the some of the other ones have better performances but the amount of increase in their performance does not justify the amount pf increase in their? price

I had a 4670k with R9 290x that needed an upgrade. After checking out the prices I figured ill take a chance on some used hardware since alot of miners are flooding the market with them, some with warranties still good.
As such I made myself a decent rig with the following parts and prices:
    - 2700x with the rgb cooler + x470 + some odd bits I didn't really need but the guy threw them in there (some cheapo ssds, a 650w PSU, a GT 710, a computer case) 359USD
    - Got a pair of cheap 8GB corsairs that I managed to take to 2933 stable, haven't tried more yet ( ill replace these at some point, but working fine so far) 118USD
    - Vega 64 for 300 bucks (the 1080 is around 360 used but fuck nvidia, I'm not buying anything stamped in green out of principle)
I am using my own PSU that has better certification but everything else is good and usable.
Grand total of 780 bucks for some hardware that will last me a few years, hopefully. I've never bought used hardware but figured I'd take a chance. There are no sales happening now so going new, the same setup would set me back roughly double, around 1450 USD (without all the extra stuff I got from the cpu guy, that I will just re-sell). I am not from the US, I just did the conversions to make it easier.
I still need to get me an AM4 mounting bracket for my noctua cooler from the previous build. around 10 more dollars shipped to replace that stock AMD one.
All in all pretty happy with the cryptocurrency crash, lots of good, cheap hardware available for a change. I ran stress tests for half a day with no problems. Now I just need to figure out what I'm going to use it for since I mostly play world of warcraft in 1080p...

    • cwli1

Yes, Ryzen. You'll be able to upgrade to newer Ryzens on the same motherboard & RAM. There's great deals now on the second-generation Ryzens, like the 8-core/16-thread 2700 & 2700x, and the first-generation Ryzens too, like the 8-core/16-thread 1700 & 1700x. Coffee lake is still based on the older Kaby Lake architecture, more cores but same engineering.

I was bored, so here's some opinions on the choices in this video.

$500 All rounder: Ryzen 2600 is the obvious choice here, especially paired with a rx 570.

$1000 All rounder: A 2700x would be the obvious pick here, the 2 extra cores plus lower price will be a lot better that the slight clock speed advantage of a 8700k unless you really need intel.

$2000 All rounder: Not sure where the 1950x is, it performs similar to a 2950x usually at a much lower price. A 9900k would be a good option if your workload skews more towards gaming.

$500 Gaming: 2200g is just better value here, plus the ryzen platform has a better upgrade path.

$1000 Gaming: 8500? Why? This is the only place I have ever seen this cpu even considered, it's a 8400 with a questionable overclock and a much higher price. A 2600 or 2600x would both be much better value. You even admit this in the buyers guide.

    $2000 Gaming. No complaints with a 8700k.

$500 Workstation: 2600 is great, but a 1700 would give you 2 extra cores at the same price, so that's an option.

$1000 Workstation: 2700x again, the extra cores are better than a 8700k unless you really need intel.

$2000 Workstation: Again, not sure why there isn't as 1950x, that's much better value.

  • Jubul Dowthitt
    Jubul Dowthitt 28 days ago

soo, who is the i9 9900k for? is it just a dickwave CPU or is it for someone who wants best single thread performance AND a ton of threads (basically a gamer who uses their machine as a workstation from time to time) or does something else fill that role as well or better?

    • Jubul Dowthitt
      Jubul Dowthitt 27 days ago

+ferfiti at least its not AS bad as it was. i remember when a 16gb (2x8) kit was $200. im seeing them with decent speeds and latency for ~ $130

    • ferfiti
      ferfiti 27 days ago

+Jubul Dowthitt Oh and just a heads-up, AMD is releasing their ryzen 3xxx soon and they look really, really juicy. If the "leaks" are to be trusted they are going to wreck Intel. I'm probably going to wait until they are released before I upgrade.

    • ferfiti
      ferfiti 27 days ago

+Jubul Dowthitt Yep, the i7 9700k is 100$ cheaper than the i9 9900k with a pretty similar single thread performance but the lack of multi-threading is a kick in the nutsack. Shame really =/. Still, I'm really glad AMD upped their game and forced Intel to lower their prices and make better CPUs. It's a really great time to buy a CPU with AMD and Intel actually competing for once. Now if only the DDR4 RAM prices would drop... The cost of a decent 2x16GB setup is insulting.

    • Jubul Dowthitt
      Jubul Dowthitt 27 days ago

+ferfiti yea, im just pissed that they took hyper threading away from the i7... they are essentially phasing it out, the i7 is becoming what the i5 was and the i9 is the new i7 only everything is more expensive.
it is a hard pill to swallow but im obsessed with the best so im probably going to pay the tax for a 9900k and 2080ti

    • ferfiti
      ferfiti 27 days ago

If I were buying today I'd choose between the Ryzen 2600X and 2700X and nothing else. But since I'm not buying yet I can hold out until Zen 2 (3000 series), maybe even up to Zen 3 or 4.

Looking for CPU (and Mobo) Recommendations for someone living in Northern Europe, so the prices will have to be in Euros.
Going with an AMD system this time. I mostly play video games, like to crank settings up even if it slightly hurts the FPS.
Also will be planning on some video and photo editing stuff occasionally, as well as testing things out in a virtual machine.
Kind of torn between the 2700(x) and TR 2920X. But recommendations are welcome. I think that the 2920X will be the highest end I am willing to go though.

    • cwli1
      cwli1 25 days ago

Why bother with i5?
