Linus can you please get a Rat's Tail? Can someone put a bet in the office and make Linus lose so he has to have a Rat's Tail? 😂😂😂

you could try citrix virtual desktop(xendestop) with GPU passthrough to the virtual maschine and you can also passthrough USB direct from the client pc to the virtual maschine :) maybe try the nvidia tesla card with a server :)

I know this is super late, but I don't understand why Linus is saying you have to pass through a whole USB controller in order to get hot plug support in a VM.

I use QEMU/KVM and I can simply pass through specific individual USB ports into my VMs and I can hot plug things into the port and they all work with the VM without rebooting.

In other words, you shouldn't need to hardware pass through entire USB controllers to achieve hot plug support, you can simply pass through specific USB ports on their own into a VM and hot plug works just fine.

might be worth looking into telsa and nvidia..... they support nvidia grid and you wouldnt need to pass through entire cards and they could share the same card

i have a question... you said rebooting takes FOREVER because of the hardware reinitialization
well, if you are running linux, cant you just do a KEXEC restart?

This is pretty cool and I've thought about something like this at home, but...if you have 6 or 7 people using this and the host crashes...how much work do you lose?

Geinuine question: if you can pass individual USB devices into a VM, why couldn't you pass through a USB hub?

50:10 The ground circuit in my home is constantly energized for some reason. I stay in the garage, and one day when moving my PC, I received a shock. I proceeded to do some testing, I don't trust my Harbor Freight multi-meter 100%, but it was reading positive voltage each time I touched a grounded metal surface with one probe and the other to actual ground. It quickly reduced to 0-0.1.
I drove a rebar stake in the ground outside my window and ran a wire to it. I connected an LED for visual monitoring, then the other lead to a screw on the chassis.
The LED has been illuminated since. Interestingly, the PC will not resume from standby if it sits for a while (overnight, or when I come home from work); only since connecting the new janky grounding rod. I have to turn it on with the power button and my session is lost. Something very intriguing is going on with the ground here.
FWIW I "Reset" W10, trying to fix a mouse settings issue, but that didn't help the standby resuming, that is clearly a voltage/current leak. - PS I have a Corsair 650W power supply, so I think? I can trust it.

ridiculous on every level.... $100,000 pc for what? is it going into a cancer research facility? NASA? because if not, you can attribute $90,000 to just pure stupidity, period.
i bench out at over 500 fps ( PER SCREEN) ... net is at max.... video quality is better than the human eye can even see.... enough storage to get lost in.... literally over the top on every level... and still enough left to buy a fucking exotic car.
on top of that... my entire house is now fully wired. all components and appliances are connected. auto shopping, scheduler, lighting, sound, screens in all 5 bedrooms and 3 baths plus out in the shop. all voice operated. nowhere near your $100,000 waste of money.

Since Unraid is basically a JBOD with parity how are your 6 editors getting high data-rates individually ?

  • JJ
    JJ 10 months ago

what's your plan connect your editors' monitor and usb ports when it's actually set up. I would assume the distance between the server and your editors room is quite far for usb 3 cable and specially for hdmi/dvi for the monitors. repeaters or active usb is not a viable options! Please illuminate us on this :) thanx
