Hidden all over the city are food towns, streets and alleys dedicated to serving one particular Korean dish and in this series we’re setting out to find some of them! In this video we take you on a massive Korean street food tour visiting jjukkumi (web-foot octopus) alley, grilled fish alley and pajeon (spring onion pancake) alley. We’re all about LOCAL food and finding the best spots to eat in a city so make sure you’re subscribed to our channel goo.gl/9rfeRS so you don’t miss out on heaps more food videos!

We start with jjukkumi bokkeum- spicy grilled baby octopus- a cracker of a dish! Jjukkumi is cooked on a hotplate on the table and served with banchan and is eaten ssam style (in a wrap). This meal was a major highlight of this trip to Seoul- spicy, tender and the accompanying banchan and sauces were perfect!
Next up we head to grilled fish alley in Dongadaemun, a narrow street made up of small restaurants serving grilled fish set meals made up of rice, soup and banchan. Smoky, tender filets of fish and a generous amount of sides make for a really satisfying meal.
We finish with pajeon- a Korean pancake. Pajeon alley is famous for serving pancakes with a thick, crispy edge and they’re really great value too. We wash our seafood pancake down with makgeolli, Korean rice wine. A must eat!
    Where we ate:
Jjukkumi Bokkeum at 98, Cheonhoyet-gil, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, open afternoon and evening. Google pin: www.google.com.my/maps/@37.5371704,127.1264051,3a,75y,283.64h,79.72t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sn0fJsJDvrNHZKfDib3cDmw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
Grilled fish alley, 서울특별시 종로구 종로5.6가동 종로40가길, open for breakfast and lunch.
Nakseo Pajeon, 서울특별시 동대문구 휘경동 319-40. Open from 2:00pm until late (we suggest visiting in the evening).

don't put that much wasabi, please. real wasabi does not have such vivid green color. that is of artificial color used in cheap powder horseradish to make the color like japanese "real" wasabi. it kills real flavor of everything. ttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasabi

    • Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena  6 months ago

Hi. Thanks for watching. Yep most wasabi isn't the real thing because it's very expensive to produce real wasabi. We find that the amount needed when using fake wasabi has a huge variation from place to place because they're all made differently. Just pop as much as you like on and if it's too much then take it back a notch for the next mouthful. It's all a personal preference as to how much people use. Hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Thomas 😀

It's so great you ate in these classic style places, there has been a lean to western and fusion food in Seoul as parts are gentrified but these places offer healthy and tastier food, classic and well-priced, I hope these kind of places survive the generations.

Not meaning to stereotype anyone or anything like that, but given that Thomas doesn't come from an Asian background, I must say the way he holds his chopsticks is spot-on. Not towards the middle (as most amateurs would) and I can see that he's very comfortable using it. I would have thought he was an Asian if I didn't know it was him. 😄 I don't get the aioli though... looks unnecessary to me but it might be heaven to some.. :)

    • Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena
      Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena  9 months ago +1

Absolutely! Like the Thai who only use chopsticks for noodles! 😀😀😀😀

    • A O
      A O 9 months ago

By the way, there're lots of chinese 'native' to the southeast asian region who use fork and spoon 80% of the time they are eating, unless they are eating noodles. :D For a lot of the things I eat, I prefer fork and spoon or even my hand, unless i'm eating noodles or dim sum. I do use chopsticks when I eat spaghetti though - very convenient and comfortable,, more so than a fork 😄

I tried the corn dish, and you asked for the results....Well it was a bit greased initially, I blended a bit of creamed cheese with an olive oil based mayonnaise with the corn and topped it with white cheddar cheese and baked it till brown! To remedy the greasy problem, I took a slice of bread to soak up the fat,my little dachshunds ate the bread so they were happy! Ireturned it to the oven to get a nice brown crust! It was a super simple, yet tasty dish! I'm going to have my grandson a few days and I'm. Going to make it for him! No two year old can resist mac and cheese and I'm betting he won't be able to resist this either! Please keep finding me foods to replicate!

The mayo was the dipping sauce for the carrot and cucumber, not the ssam. Also, the perilla leaf marinade is not considered a kimchi, but a banchan. Glad you enjoyed!

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena  10 months ago

Hi Sunny An, thanks for watching and we hope you enjoyed the video! Hehe yes we know the Mayo is for the carrots and cucumbers but we love it with the ssam as it goes so well with the spiciness of the jjukkumi 😆 thanks so much for the info about the perilla leaf. We were told it was perilla leaf kimchi which is why we said it- is there in fact a different way that perilla leaf is prepared and is known as perilla leaf kimchi? Hope you enjoy our other Seoul videos! Cheers, Sheena 😄

Oh yeah! The grilled octopus looked great, especially with all the added ingredients. I'm intrigued by the perilla leaves. The fish looked great, but I'm allergic. So, I would have to give that a miss. The sides looked good, so I could munch away away those. 😄 That pancake though! I love spring onions.

    • Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena  10 months ago

Hi bandknight! Thanks for watching this one! Are you not able to eat all fish? Would octopus be fine for you though? That was an amazing meal. We loved how the flavour just built and built. We can't get enough of the perilla leaves while in Korea. The best bit is you can ask for as many as you like so we always have so many of them. The aniseed flavour is really good. They have a very fresh taste also so work really well as wraps. And yes that pancake was something else! I think that will be our first meal when we next make it to Korea. SOOO good! Thanks again for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀

This is such a sea food delight 😍. One question, have you ever been disappointed in a meal after taking a bite? But you smile to the camera just to be polite?🤣🤣 I'm asking cos I can believe really enjoyed the raw liver from last week's video😂😂😂😂😂

    • Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena
      Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena  10 months ago +3

Hi Usoh Ede Peace! Thanks for watching this one! It sure was a great day of seafood eating! 😋 haha re the raw liver in the last video. It wasn't bad at all. It was something I've never had before and I really enjoyed getting to try it. Re being disappointed yep it happens. We spend hours and hours researching where to eat as we want to only show the best local spots. Because of that what we're eating is often the best of the best so we don't get disappointed too often. But when we do we figure who wants to watch us eating food that isn't the best so we sometimes just put the camera down and don't continue to film. Our aim is to show people the best food in the places we visit so we prefer to just not film if it's not incredible. Also we're often filming at tiny family run places and we don't feel it would be right for us to come in and just say someones food isn't good. We'd rather just not film and only every show people amazing food! 😋 Hope that makes sense! Cheers, Thomas 😀

I was drooling through this video. How does one communicate at these restaurants when you don't speak Korean. I assume they don't speak English either.Like how do you choose your fish for example.

    • Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena
      Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena  10 months ago +1

Totally striker22! People can visit these restaurants and play our videos to show the staff what they want to eat 😜 Hope you enjoyed this video, thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena

Just save a picture or play a video of whatever food you want to order on your phone and show the wait staff. This is a general travel hack to use when ordering if you don't have time to learn the names or read the menu in native language. Obviously this only works if you have a rough idea of the kind of food that the restaurant serve in the first place.

      Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena  10 months ago +1

Hi rotitelor, thanks for watching and commenting mate! So glad you enjoyed this one 😄 it can be quite tricky in Korea, we communicate via a mix of sign language, really basic Korean and pointing. Often we’ll research what we want to eat (like with the fish we decided what types we might like to eat and film) and then I learnt the Korean names for them. Although in this instance they had no idea what the hell I was saying and another customer had to jump in and translate for us 😆 Sometimes we take screenshots of dishes on our phone from our research and show the staff once we’re at the restaurant too. That usually works quite well! Hope you’re enjoying this series mate. Cheers, Sheena

Cheesy sweetcorn sounds delicious to us and something we've not seen before. Love the murals guys. That long silver fish looked like a melted sword! It looked delicious grilled and all the accompaniments looks so fresh and tasty. Fermented rice drink sounds interesting but the pancake steals the show for us in this episode xx

Lastly in Seoul new year 2014 , I did not enjoy food too much because I was very difficult to find halal food.😁 OMG Senna...watching the way you chew food makes me want to eat Korean instant noodles

Perilla leaf kimchi sounds really interesting - haven’t had it before. That wasabi is so deep green - surprised to hear it was sweet and not so spicy

  • SuzyGrowsMyBiz
    SuzyGrowsMyBiz 10 months ago +1

That wasabi was such a crazy color and Thomas said it was sweet. Was it real wasabi or artificially made to be that color and sweetness? Hmmm... I don't think I have ever tasted real wasabi, it's usually powered fake stuff in the US. And those green onion pancakes looked almost like they were covered in panko, looked so yummy! Thx for another great video!

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena  10 months ago

Hi SuzyGrowsMyBiz, thanks for watching and commenting on this one! We’re so happy you enjoyed it 😄 it was such a vivid green right?! It must have artificial colouring to be that colour we reckon. We are very used to eating the fake stuff too- on the odd occasion we have the real deal it’s blown us away- the flavour is awesome! Omg those pancakes were legendary! Can’t wait to return to eat more of them! Is there a lot of Korean food available where you live? Hope you’re having a great weekend! Cheers, Sheena 😘

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena ....My best friend taught English as a second language in South Korea for many years....she brought home so many recipes that I truly love! As a matter of fact she is credited for converting me into a food adventurer! I ate a wide variety of foods but not Asian foods. (I don't count US Chinese food Asian... it's not authentic) Linda passed away in 1989 from leukemia, but she left me a wonderful gift of ,loving foods from all over the world, and not being afraid to try new foods! That's why I enjoy your videos, you try all kinds of new flavors, and you describe them so well I'm able to copy the foods well enough to get a reasonably good idea of what that food is like! Thank you!
