Back to normality in South Africa as Covid cases fall - BBC News

  • The Omicron variant of Covid-19, first discovered in South Africa, eight weeks ago, appears to be fading and life in South Africa is returning to normal.
The scientific consensus in South Africa is that while Omicron is very contagious the death toll has been much smaller than in past waves of Covid.
Some of South Africa’s scientists are speaking out, accusing richer nations of being quick to believe bad news about Covid but questioning good news about the virus coming from South Africa.

I think that South Africa is a good example of a country that is both socially and ethnically diverse enough to be a good example to the rest of the world in terms of the Omicron variant. I do think that we should be taking note of what has happened there whilst observing what is going on in our own countries/countries of residence.

Really pleased to see that things are finally improving their, South Africa is certainly a country that needs some good news for a change with all the other bad news there has been there recently.
I still disagree with what Prof. Salim Karim says, it's correct for every country to expect and prepare for the worst when a new strain is discovered and until there is enough data to confirm the science which needs to also be validated via independent peer review.
That's not in any way unique to this virus, that's been a part of how good scientific research has been handled since even before the great scientific minds of Pythagoras, Aristotle, etc of ancient Greece over 2000 years ago. It's been incredibly tough on South Africa but you we don't alter how good science works merely because it's been incredibly tough on a particular country, irrelevant of which country that is.

If only was as simple as only one factor though, as has been true since we've been able to catalogue cases of any viruses you can find the numbers vary greatly due to many factors including climate, population coverage, etc.
There will be people in areas and/or countries with much power population densities which can mean that there are people who may well never meet somebody else with Covid even though they're living their lives exactly as they did before the initial outbreak.

Well, thank God it is not so bad. Frankly, I know about 15 ppl who have gotten sick in the last few weeks, myself included. It is not fair to say it was not a big deal, because with that many ppl sick, it really is significant, but it was not as deadly (obviously) as the first wave and delta. When I was sick, it was not fun. I don't think America overreacted at all. It was a threat and we treated it as such. We listened when you said it was not as bad/not deadly...but no one wants to be sick and so it was important to slow the spread with measures. Also, I know where I do and do not want to put my money now...seeing which companies care (or do not care) about their employees.

    • V
      V 4 months ago

@ark Certainly. I hope so, too. However, it's key to note that even those in South Africa were surprised that countries suddenly got frantic with this new variant. It's still good to be safe, but the reaction was overblown. There were instances last year when the Delta variant came through, and Boris Johnson shut down all borders suddenly to the U.K. All those U.K. vacationers in Portugal and other countries were in a dire panic trying to find a way home or at least some accommodations for the extended stay they were not planning for. If the world keeps reacting this way for every variant, which by virological patterns will decrease in severity as time goes on, everyone is going to die from heart attacks instead of COVID!

    • ark
      ark 4 months ago

@V and we would not have known that until we rode this wave. Hopefully there will be no long covid. That is still an unknown with omicron and having experienced long covid from the first wave, I think being cautious with this one was wise. Hopefully it continues to weaken and that less ppl experience longstanding, disabling covid.

    • V
      V 4 months ago

I know of some myself that have gotten sick from it. However, I would still say that this variant was overhyped in that it was portrayed as both very transmissible _and_ very deadly, when it reality it was only very transmissible and not very deadly. Scientifically, virus variants rarely ever mutate like the Delta variant to become more dangerous, so it only makes sense that variants will diminish in severity as the months pass on and the variants keep popping up. As many people have said, COVID-19 will become so commonplace that it will eventually be treated like the normal flu, as viruses are never eradicated completely. Polio still exists but has been greatly diminished. The best policy I would give to everyone is to keep wearing your masks and washing your hands if you want to protect yourself and others around you. But don't give in to fear.

Let's all hope that it is good for all countries with this variant though, I think we could all do with a change.

    • V
      V 4 months ago

@Dougal Tolan Yes, it was a guess. But that guess was a strong hypothesis. Based on the information we have about variants, variants are less deadly as they are produced. That doesn't, of course, dismiss the fact that people still got really sick and were discomfited for days. But the threat of dying wasn't as bad as the media portrayed it. According to common virology, it wouldn't make sense if it were as bad or worse.
