Under arrest: The future of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks | The Listening Post (Full)

Under arrest: The future of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks
Six years, nine months, three weeks, two days after taking refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy, the impasse was broken when Julian Assange was dragged out of the building by British police in response to an extradition request from the United States.
When it comes to media personalities and stories about the news and journalism, there are few that come bigger than Assange and WikiLeaks.
Assange stands charged with "a conspiracy to commit computer intrusion," and his extradition could have wider implications for journalists in the digital age.
The Listening Post sits down with WikiLeaks editor Kristinn Hrafnsson to discuss what's at stake for the media and Assange's chances of getting a fair trial.

The media backstory behind Malaysia's 1MDB corruption case
Last week, Malaysia's former prime minister, Najib Razak, went on trial over one of the biggest corruption scandals the world has ever seen. The media shorthand for the case is 1MDB - since it involves a sovereign wealth fund by the same name that Najib set up. The fund lost billions of dollars - almost $700m of which is alleged to have ended up in his own bank account.
The Malaysian media are all over the story, but it wasn't always that way. Under Najib's government there were red lines that reporters - and the news outlets they work for - feared to cross. And if not for a British journalist running a website out of London, one business newspaper in Kuala Lumpur, and a secret meeting that took place in Singapore, Malaysians might not know about any of this.
The Listening Post's Flo Phillips reports on the media backstory behind the 1MDB scandal.

Thank you for not disabling your comments section, like some (so called) 'news outlets' have. They are scared shitless because 99.9% of comments are roasting corporate news outlets for their revolting gutlessness, for their failure to see the writing on the wall... Do state propaganda, (fake news,) by all means. The masses already know that corporate news is bought and paid for... But stick up for real investigative journalists when they're CIA framed, falsely accused and jailed in a supermax prison (for a minor offence... Skipping bail.) Non violent offenders usually get a small fine in the UK... Julian is not a Mafia boss, he's a journalist doing what you people should be doing but don't do, for the above reasons.

This is about more than Trump! He wasn't president when Chelsea got arrested, was he?! Granted, Obama pardoned her, but this kind of corruption has been the norm in this country for a long time! I'm not saying this in defense of Trump; I'm done with him and will not be voting for him. The problem is thinking it's just the Trump administration! There's no hope of a president putting an end to all this madness! Our presidents haven't been in charge for a long time! They have all been puppets! Maybe it's time that we, the people take action instead of putting hope into politicians!

"TheXvid is funded in whole or in part by Google, a for-profit international technology corporation, unaccountable to the People of the World"
Though the sub-text TheXvid places under this and other videos is superficially just information, it's inclusion suggests that the content of this video is misleading propaganda, and further suggests that the videos WITHOUT the subtext banner identifying it's source (e.g. American media corporations) is to be considered as objective truth from a "free press".
    These banners are themselves propaganda.

    A travesty...
Assange was carrying Gore Vidal's book "History of the National Security State" when they dragged him out.
Manning and Wikileaks are heroes - History will remember them as such. They
inspired the Arab Spring which toppled stooges, lackeys and dictators
around the world - the movement was reversed by Arab monarchs and their
    Anglo-Saxon-French-Zionist friends

The whole theater was just that theatre. When you dig deep enough you find that it seems Wikileaks was either coopted at an early stage of their existence or had planned this outcome all along to set precedent against whistleblowers. Forced or complied either way the result is the same.his comments on 911 are highly dubious his lack of criticism on isreal. Any time the mass media promotes something on a viral scale it should raise a red flag.

0_o The real world seems to have an uncanny resemblance to Game of Thrones….
    Julian Assange = Jon Snow
    Ser Alliser Thorne = America
    Janos Slynt = Donald Trump
Leaking American war crimes = Letting the wildlings south of the wall
The wights = The ever increasing censorship & people becoming zombies that are detached from reality
The White Walkers = Our innate tendency to succumb to fear
Now we just have to hope Julian stays strong & comes back from the dead, because America is sending quite a few knives his way..
Or maybe I've watched too much GoT..^__^

The fact that asange has no personal gain nor did he live comfortably doing what he did is proof enough that he is a true journalist. Problem is asange chose a country which is unstable and have much to gain from USA. Asange could have chosen china where he wont be extradited regardless of the cause, but probably he ll lose credibility because china is known for censorship and anti journalist freedom. 2nd choice would be russia, but he still lose credibility. TBH, there is no country in the world that is truly righteous that is out of reach of american influence. He was doomed from the start.

U.S.prosecutors have charged, Julian Assange, founder of the WikiLeaks website, with conspiracy in trying to access a classified U.S. government computer with former U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning in 2010. What a criminal!! He should have got a proper job! Not one that involves acting like a criminal to conduct his business! Hope you like Porridge for the next 10 years! A Traitor to America. Just to get your website publicity and name in the paper! He is not being charged with publishing media information and for voicing his Freedom of the Press opinions and views. Nothing wrong with that. But you can't be running a business acting like a CRIMINAL! Assange is a big coward. Why didn't he choose to walk out the building in dignity with his head held high! He knew he was getting evicted! Looked like he was acting like a big crying baby! You can't go breaking into and hacking any Company, Businesses and Government Services Computers. We all know it is a serious crime! You go to jail for that if caught! What a way to run a business - pathetic!

When Julian Assange freely hands over governments' and corporate dark secrets to the people of the world, he is called a criminal by these governments and the corporate media. He is arrested and persecuted.
BUT when Mark Zuckerberg sells people's secrets to these governments and international corporations, he is declared 'Person of the Year'.
Is this the kind of system we want to live with?

It's terrible what people in power can do to people who threaten the status quo. He's already had to live under house arrest at the Ecuador Embassy for 7 years but obviously is not enough for those in power that want to make an example of him. Beware of those who think the World belongs to them.

Got to keep repeating this, because nobody seems to point this out: ASSANGE IS NOT A JOURNALIST. Journalism has ethical boundaries and journalistic integrity and standards to abide by, which protect sources if they wish to remain anonymous, which strive for accuracy in reporting, which actively corroborate with other news organizations, and which clarify and update stories as they develop. Journalists do not partake in hacking, theft, or trespassing, as those are laws that everyone must abide by. They are protected, however, in the release of classified information or secretive information, provided that they themselves did not commit a crime in order to obtain those documents. The source may be responsible for obtaining those documents illicitly, but the freedom of the press ensures that journalists are able to publish whatever documents are given to them from an external source.
Julian Assange was aiding his sources and directing them to steal classified documents using stolen credentials. He chose the targets, he chose the timing of such hacks, and he even instructed them on which documents he wanted obtained. He was far from impartial, because they were specific agencies and institutions that he wanted to infiltrate, which aligned with the desires of those in power who have a distinctly anti-American bent. He opposed the release of some documents (like the Panama Papers), while eagerly airing out dirty laundry from America's intelligence agencies and political forums (just the Dems, but hardly ever the Republicans). He had his own agenda to fulfill, and that didn't involve engaging the public - it was meant to manipulate them.
The only way this can be a "dark day for journalism" is if people conflate investigative journalism with cyber-hacking and security fraud, which it appears many here in the comments are already doing. Anonymous sources can still impart secret documents and classified information to proper news organizations who know how to handle such data with care and sensitivity. And don't think for a second that this means Wiki Leaks is dead in the water. There's no shortage of individuals dedicated to exposing the inner workings of the world's largest governments and institutions. But don't make Assange your champion. Real reporters put their careers and sometimes their lives on the line in order to bring about truth and transparency - Assange has risked neither.
