Why Red Bull has dropped Gasly for Albon in F1

  • Published on Aug 12, 2019
  • Red Bull caused a shock in the Formula 1 summer break by announcing it has dropped Pierre Gasly back to Toro Rosso, replacing him with rookie Alexander Albon - just over a week after the team said Gasly's drive was safe until the end of the year. Scott Mitchell explains why Red Bull felt the time was right to make the change, why it chose Albon over the more experienced Daniil Kvyat, and what it means for Red Bull's second seat alongside Max Verstappen for 2020

For me Albon is a little bit of an inspiration, not his racing or his talent but his demeanor and attitude. No matter the issue he smiles and always seems to make the best out of a bad situation regardless. Very Positive and a true insight into his upbringing as as kid, his parents are surely very proud. I wish him all the best... If he can learn and race with Max , RedBull will have some savage lineup for 2020.. Max is Championship Potential Redbull need to deliver in 2020, because we all know Max will.

Redbull taking the biggest chance of there life!Albom as more pressure so there for will find it hard to match his team mate.He will make big mistakes like any other driver. I ask who's fault will it be if he fails to prosper? I think redbull are crazy changing driver halfway through the season.it doesn't just put pressure on the Alborn..it puts pressure on max stap..we wait and see what happens!Good luck to Alborn..hope he does him self proud.and prove he is the right choice for the job....

Well considering albon was more likely to win the championship in a toro Rosso compared to Gasly in a red bull even tho the car is fitted to Verstappens skills

Austrian entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz was inspired by an existing energy drink named Krating Daeng, which was first introduced and sold in Thailand by Chaleo Yoovidhya. He took this idea, modified the ingredients to suit the tastes of Westerners,[6] and, in partnership with Chaleo, founded Red Bull GmbH in 1987 in Chakkapong, Thailand. In Thai, daeng means red, and a krating (known in English as a gaur or Indian bison) is a large species of wild bovine native to South Asia. Yoovidhya's heirs own majority stakes in both brands, and they both use the same red bull on yellow sun logo while continuing to market the separate drinks to the respective Thai and Western markets

i think Mr. Horner can really handle genius like Alonso as he shown with MAX. and in many others. Come on RB- you can fix the relation between Alonso and Honda. I wish all F1 fans will agree on this. Please RB. & why not?

Well, Gasly is a teammate to one of the best drivers right now and one that can be on pair with Hamilton in the future. And if he gets a chance to drive for the best teams, maybe even better. So the only thing wrong about Gasly is that he is competing against the best. Its the same with Bottas. He is not a bad driver if you look at his times and stats, but if you compare him to Hamilton, he is no where close. Albon will maybe have better chances, and they wont give the seat to Kvyat yet, as that would be his second chance, and he is not good enough right now. Maybe Albon does something great, maybe not. I think RB are sure that Max will stay for next season, they are just trying to find the best driver no2 in the house.

That's a big negative ghost rider. Albon will not do better then Gasly. Since Albon will still serve as a test car to develop Max's car. If Red Bull upgraded the cars evenly I'd say that you'd see better results from Gasly.

Red Bull wants to in obviously. And they want a good teammate. I like the move. Gasly has shown that he is not good enough to challenge at least Ferrari for 2nd place in the constructors. Can it ruin Albon. Yes. But RB after the season knows where it´s at. And a driver worth the cockpit next to Max can deal with it, even a young one. Max and Charles have shown it.

I think it's a bad decision, it's albon's first year in formula 1 he , he has very little experience with F1 cars and general F1 operations, although his progress has been impressive, they should let him stay at torro rosso for at least the rest of the season so that he can get better accustomed to formula 1 before piling on him the pressure of contending with Max Verstappen and adapting to a new car .

Is it possible that Redbull are simply taking a gamble on Albon to give them the points to beat Ferrari this year, with the expectation of picking up Bottas for 2020?

  • Dave McRee
    Dave McRee 7 days ago

    A no brainer really.
    1. Useless
    2. Ongoing media beat up (like the whole Bottas thing) forces team to do something it could have let slide until contracts came up.

I agree that RB should make a move, but I'd have thought Kvyat was the logical choice. He's 11 points ahead of Albon, with a podium. Albon hasn't performed "excellently" (as the narrator describes); he's been good, but Kvyat has been better.

    • Henry B.
      Henry B. 6 days ago +1

they want to test Albon and see how Albon does in the Red Bull. They already have many data of Kvyat in the Red Bull, so in the end they know which driver would be the best option for the 2nd car next year. Maybe they bring Hartley back ;-)

  • awannagannaful
    awannagannaful 7 days ago

It's simple really: if Albon performs well, they keep him, longevity proves the wisdom in the longer term investment. If he doesn't, and Kvyat continues to deliver at STR, they can take him for next year, and Albon will still have gained some senior top level experience for when the spot opens next. Personally, i would have preferred to see Kvyat and i think he deserved it more too.

  • Luke Septer
    Luke Septer 7 days ago

I think it was a bit harsh to instantly drop gasly in the middle of his first season at red bull, but I do understand the choice of red bull as the switch might be determinative for their position in the constructors championships

  • Garrett
    Garrett 7 days ago

It's a gamble, for sure. But I think it's definitely worth it. I wonder why Albon got it over Kyvat, but both have had excellent races. Both are able to get more out of their cars than Gasly, who's had trouble staying in the top 6 even though his car is significantly faster than the 7th fastest, on average. Taking a risky bet on a good driver will probably be better than taking a sure bet on an under-performing one.
