- Kolkata Sector 5 is the telephone scam capital of the world. Although I've reported lots of scam call centers there, nothing seems to happen. So what could be better than turning up at these call centers armed with (harmless) devices which will get the attention of these scam groups and hopefully the rest of the world.
Thanks to the engineering skills of Mark Rober and the to Trilogy Media who made the trip to India to confront the scammers themselves, we managed to film a set of pranks via the scammers' own CCTV cameras.
Although this is having some fun at the expense of scammers, this is a serious problem. Millions of dollars are lost to these scammers and the police in Kolkata do very little to shut down these call centers, so it would be great if people shared these videos and tweeted @KolkataPolice
Let's hope we can make a "shut down" video before long. In the meantime, enjoy....

He has literally created a form of awareness (his entire channel), then encourages his audience to share his videos to those at risk from scams? The fact theyre entertaining videos means more people will watch them which means more awareness is raised rather than a forgettable radio broadcast or a junk mail pamflet. Besides you can apply your exact logic to some of the "solutions" you suggested: why the hell would you go door to door, there are millions of elderly people, while you're at the door of on elderly person, there are thousands of others getting scammed. stop showing off your lizard like IQ and engage more than one braincell

@Tim Hartherz Thats in fact not true... Depends on the countries, though. Scam is a crime and it's not important, where the victim is, but where the scammer ist. And there were scammers jailed in India before, so the law is there.
Also a lot of laws include non national crimes as well - your name sounds German, German Crime Law for examples finds place when a German citizen is victim in another country and when this is a crime in this country as well - or when a German citizen does a crime in another country or an area without penal power (for example international waters).
If you are German and you kill someone in open waters, you will still be punished by German law. I'm not sure, if the Indian law has a similiar rule, but most countries do.
I guess, the problem is mostly, that it's not illegal - but hard to make a sentencing without the victim as witness. And corruption, of course, we're still talking about organized crime^^
@Pradyumn That's why we have so called official offences in Germany, where the police has to open a case, even if the victim does not file a complaint or is not reachable, as soon as they gain knowledge of a crime case in the offical offences... Scam is one of these as well, cause victims often don't file a complain on their own.
But let's be honest, it's not, because the police is busy, but because of corruption. These callcenters are organized crime, some policeman will get their share. Not all of course, perhaps just very few - but the "right" ones.
Missed opportunity to say: "I'm in the office, I work with you. Find me"

Have you guys thought about putting a bunch of spiders in a box with a spring?. those roaches are disgusting, but some people would absolutely freak out from spiders. Was thinking the same thing, it just shows another layer of how confused and uncomfortable with the turn of events they were to not realize how illogical their attempts to shift the conversation back to their "normal" schedule were just to make it stop and get back in control.
Doing a great job. Everyone who watches this whenever you get a scam call you should stay on for at least like 5 minutes (if you have the time of course) and go along with the scam. Make it look like they have you hooked in then hang up or say something snarky lol. Waste as much time as possible.

I have been getting harassed by a company called Beneficial for over 4 years. Receive calls almost every day from them. It started 1 week after I got a brand new number and had been hardly used at that point. They always ask if my name is Mr Ellis. I say no its the wrong number but most of the time they try to get my name. I ask them to delete my number from the system but it never happens.

@VC CV I'm stating common sense. If there's a problem then it needs to be fixed. And the problem is a national problem because there are also call centres in Delhi, thus the government of India should take some responsibility in trying to tackle this issue. I don't know the laws of India, but if the problem is not resolved at the state level then it needs to be escalated to next higher level, the Indian government. This is common sense. There's a hierarchical structure, a chain of command in every country/society. Why is it not being implemented in India? If it is, it's not effective. This is a "common sense approach" which you don't possess. You don't need to know the laws of any country to have common sense.

@Humble Servant even before California decriminalized marajuana, people were selling and smoking it by then butt loads. A lot of cops just look the other way even though it was illegal. Someone is making money, the dealers, the cartels, but police would still look the other way. I’m sure the police were thinking they have bigger fish to fry and maybe that’s the same mentality in for the Calcutta police and the Indian government.
@Humble Servant I’m sure it’s not that simple when you have a billion people to govern. That’s why states and even cities within the states have their own laws and how they choose to enforce it. It’s just like here in California. I can grow and smoke and buy weed, yet it’s federally illegal. Why doesn’t the government just step in and shut everything down? It’s not that simple, States have power, so do cities within the states. I’m sure it’s no different in India.

I once had these scammers call me once about my windows PC. I told them I own a Mac and they tried to convince me that my Mac was running Windows and there was a problem. Nice to see these scumbags getting justice.

Never had that one. The few times I've told them I run Linux, they hung up. I usually play along in a virtual machine and let them get through the script to the point they start asking for payment, then telling them I can't afford it. Usually wastes around 50 minutes of their time, during which they're not talking to someone who'll fall for their scam.

You can't take anyone down with glitter bombs
Take who down, what and when, and how? Nobody manage to touch them in the last 5 years except for some minor small "victories" over smaller scammer call centers. It will be 10 years from known and we will still watch how these call centers are getting prank mail on their front door... They work for 12 hours and every now and then get to talk with Twitch streamers exposing them and entertaining them in the process.

Jim, Mark et all- some advice. An easy way to shut down a scam centre- once you identify the location mark the owners of the building and loudly keep referring to them on their site, twitter etc. Many of these centres seem to be on big tech park buildings, the owners will boot them out to keep their reputations for big companies they'd like to keep.

I’m sorry but the last thing I as a potential scam victim am going to be concerned with is the sensitivities of the absolutely minute number of Indian phone people who actually aren’t pretending to be from a company that they are not. Also, most customers absolutely do NOT hang up when they hear an Indian accent. Maybe if they did the scamming industry would have less of a profit. I would rather be rAyCiSt than thousands of pounds out of pocket.

@Tom Sullivan I am serious, that's a really black and white way of thinking. Most people commit crimes out of necessity rather than being 'evil', sure there's also those people but that doesn't mean they all are. Also there's then the nuance of people brought up in environments of crime and are conditioned into it etc. A lot of people will do things they know are bad but are put into situations where they need to, you know what reduces crime rates? Better standard of living and less poverty.

@Allan Shpeley That's why I pointed out that being a perpetrator and a victim aren't mutually exclusive. No one commits crimes for fun. But there are tons of possible rationalizations - all of which are flawed, but some of which go beyond bad personality and into sociopolitical reasons. For example "politicians are corrupt, so why should I play by the rules" is a flawed line of reasoning, but it's also a reaction to greater societal issues. But just to emphasize this again: understanding why someone does something isn't the same thing as approving of it. A scam is still a scam and a scammer is still an immoral criminal regardless of the reasons.

YEARS ago, a friend of mine, an older lady, was called over her phone and somebody tried to tell her that her PC had a bug and they were scanning it as they were on the phone. She said 'Hold on a minute' and set the phone down. She checked to make sure of something and then got back on the phone. She told them that it was not even possible that they were scanning her PC at that moment but maybe they had the wrong phone number. They argued with her of course. She then explained that her PC was NOT EVEN PLUGGED IN because she unplugs it EVERY TIME she is done using it (it is a really OLD pc). They argued with her for a little bit longer before realizing they were talking to a very intelligent lady with razor-sharp mind and not somebody with mental problems. She explained to the guy's 'supervisor' as well, that her PC was not even plugged in. He finally hung up but that was almost fifteen minutes after she got the call. :D
