    What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms;
    What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.
    Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms;
    Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.
    O how sweet to walk, In this pilgrim way,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms;
    O how bright the path grows from day to day,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.
    What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms;
    I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.

    The music has lyrics that go with it:
    What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms;
    What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.
    Leaning, leaning,

    Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms;
    Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.
    Leaning, leaning,
    Safe and secure from all alarms;
    Leaning, leaning,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.
    What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms;
    I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.
    Leaning, leaning,
    Safe and secure from all alarms;
    Leaning, leaning,
    Leaning on the everlasting arms.

    To me, it's a licence to go out and murder. Why should the British government call me up and take me out to a battlefield to shoot a man I never knew, whose language I couldn't speak? All those lives lost for a war finished over a table. Now what is the sense in that? - Harry Patch

    This truce came into effect on the Christmas of 1914. The German and British forces had adopted a "live and let live" police where they would not fire on you unless you fired on them. This was widely accepted across the front lines where 70% honoured the policy. With the exception of trenches closest to Russia where the policy was tried but almost immediately failed. This policy was kept secret from the generals and superior officers through fear of them disagreeing and forcing them to abandon the policy and reingage with the enemy.
    Pope benedict xv tried to appeal to the leaders of Europe “that the guns may fall silent at least upon the night the angels sang.” unfortunately neither sides leaders were interested.
    On Christmas day it was the Germans who left the trenches first and (making sure to carrry no weapons) they approached no man's land waving there arms to signal they had no ill intent. Once the British forces saw this they also left the trenches to meet them in no man's land.
    Many of the German forces had worked in Britain before the war had broke out and could speak English as a result. This made this truce possible as not many british soldiers spoke German it was essential for them to communicate. This is mainly why the truce failed in the Russian provinces as the British and Russians could not communicate.
    Both sides played several games of football and exchanged gifts but not all of them did this. Some realised that hostilities would commence soon and used the time to reinforce the trenches and the fortifications. They also used this time to Bury the dead.
    Not everyone agreed with this and some where very vocal. Adolth Hitler was very vocal about the rediculousness of this temporary truce and was ofter heard being extremely vocal. Adolth Hitler was heard saying Such a thing should not happen in wartime,” and “Have you no German sense of honour?”.
    The truce lasted for 1 day but the ceasefire last in many parts until the 2nd of January. After this the generals and senior officers took steps to reingage and force there troops to resume hostilities.
    No court marshals or punishments are said to of been issued but this occasion never took place again. Both sides made sure that hostilities resumed on Christmas day.

    This is definitely one of the most beautiful things I've ever watched and it's a damned commercial. I had a hunch but I looked it up for translation, Otto calls Rose "schön" or beautiful in English. I know that Jim and Otto are "fictional" characters, but I like to believe that they both survived the war and somehow were able to grab a pint after everything.

    • Crusadist1099
      Crusadist1099 3 months ago

      Since they are fictional, you can imagine anything you want happened to them. If they both perished it would be a pretty short story. So, let's believe that both, by wisdom, skill, and a good bit of luck, made it to the end. Jim was promoted to sergeant and Otto won the Knight's Cross with swords. Jim married Rose, and they raised Ned, born 1921. Otto also married, and his son Heinrich arrived about the same time. They attempted to look one another up, but, since there was no internet it was not as easy as we think it would be. The years passed, and you know what came later. Ned survived Dunkirk and D-Day, only to be killed during the advance into Germany. Heinrich fell during the brief German counteroffensive we call the Battle of the Bulge. Jim and Otto did meet once more, under the saddest circumstances, as Jim claimed his son's body.
