How ‘Midsommar’ Takes a Bad Trip | Anatomy of a Scene

  • Published on Jul 5, 2019
  • Before the new horror film “Midsommar” creeps you out, it first tries to freak you out.
In this scene, after arriving in rural Sweden, the lead character Dani (Florence Pugh) has agreed to take mushrooms under pressure from her boyfriend's friends. She’s recently suffered the kind of trauma that likely (definitely) won’t be soothed by hallucinogens.
With the sequence, the writer and director Ari Aster wanted to put audiences into the mind-altering point of view of a character on mushrooms. In narration, he discusses how he and his visual effects team achieved the scene’s moments of warping, morphing and disorientation.

Just watched this movie. I've been a travel writer for 15 years, and Midsommar eerily reflected my first trip to Sweden! Can't decide if that was stranger than the movie haha.

Her distorted view while tripping and the sounds were exactly how I felt when I took shrooms. The texture of objects changing and warping was exactly how I experienced it. It was such a great scene and very well done. I was scared for the entirety of her trip because it went bad and it most definitely felt real. Great job all around!

Florence Pugh’s reactions to everything in this scene are on point! I also really wish the director talked about how many takes his took considering it’s a long one but oh well.

Only ever had one “bad trip”, and while all trips are almost impossible to describe I cannot believe how close this is to capturing what that bad trip felt like.

This scene was actually very triggering for me because it made me relive a very bad trip I had, almost frame for frame. I had never done drugs before and tried a synthetic marijuana with my friends 🤦🏾‍♀️ everything was fine until they started laughing and then suddenly the panic set in, I jumped up and started running towards the woods to get away but trees and ground were warping and moving and it scared me even more JUST like in the movie. I felt more invested in her character because I remembered feeling like she did. This was an amazing movie.

    • Fool
      Fool 2 days ago

Yeah I got the exact same thing. I've done some psychedelics (lsd, edible weed) which always make me panic. This scene made me have flashbacks. I've never seen a panic attack on drugs recreated to such accuracy. Dont worry, just remember it was something that's in your past. It was the drug you took, that experience wasnt your sober perception of reality

One thing I noticed the second time I watched the film was how Dani's face is warped when she sees her reflection in the mirror inside the outhouse. She looks like Quasimodo. You can also see the Quasimodo look in the faces of the crowd that celebrates her afrer she wins the dance competition.
