Adding Pixel Art Effects to my Deckbuilder and a Return to Prototyping (Devlog)
Hey everyone! Covenant of Roses is a tactical deckbuilding roguelike that takes the remixes the best of both genres on a Lovecraftian chessboard. This month's devlog discusses various pixel art effects, like new fading enemy healthbars, juciy pixel art particle systems, and more!
Also, a few thoughts on game design and refining/experimenting with the core game loop. Prototyping is something I should've done more of so that's what I'm pivoting towards.

Hey everyone! Covenant of Roses is a tactical deckbuilding roguelike that takes the remixes the best of both genres on a Lovecraftian chessboard. The amount of tools for modern web development can be pretty overwhelming, and their number is only growing. This is my take on the tools you need to build a website in 2021. The video will break down the functions of four essential components for making a website, explore why we need them, and show how they fit together. The stack that I'll go over here is the standard React GatsbyJS toolchain...
Game Jam Devlog! - Making a Reverse Horror Survival Game from scratch in 10 days
Views 29KYear ago
This game jam devlog is about a reverse-horror game I made this Spooktober Seaason to capture the spirit of Halloween, complete with occasional buggy AI and a player controlled monster right out of the Cthulhu mythos. I think Halloween might just be my favourite holiday (I'm a fan of candy), and I've always wanted to make a spooky game set in a city amongst my fellow trick-or-treaters. This was...

One major component I just added to my game is a procedurally generated world map, in the style of Slay the Spire or FTL. LaTeX can't render equations until you've completely written them out, so it wouldn't be able to update those live. As for normal text, you can read it off your text editor. The typesetting engine might not be that slow but constantly refreshing the PDF output is likely to burn a lot of compute power and in general doesn't provide much benefit. If you're looking for a more 'live' solution, I suggest Markdown.

    • Wintermute Digital

If it's not working for you, I suggest trying an online editor like Overleaf. There are an immense amount of configuration/environment-specific problems that will require creative troubleshooting if you want to have a local LaTeX setup, so if you do not have the time, try an online editor.

Really a great and valuable tutorial. May I kindly ask your opinion about something? I tried to remesh another font but the remeshing is pretty sloppy even if it's set to sharp. So, I didn't remesh the text and I intersected with a cube but it sometimes solidify without constantly being transparent and giving this annoying flickering effect. Any thoughts about how to solve it? Thanks a lot in advance :)

I've been trying to do something similar with using scriptable objects for card data. How did you handle each card having a unique effect?

    • Fire Biscuit Gaming
Fire Biscuit Gaming 28 days ago

In my card game Paladin's Oath (released last month), each card is a scriptable object with a combination (and/or) of effects or combinations of effects. Each effect is also a scriptable object implementing an interface. The effect values are also scriptable objects (ex: "2") and can be dynamic (ex: number of red crystals in inventory). So cards are created entirely by drag and drop and compositing scriptable objects together. The effects interface tells me how the effect behaves and the data of the SO tells me the effect configuration (targets, value, repeat etc). I created a pretty bad video explaining how it works. You can also try the demo of the game for free on Steam and see how things work.

      Wintermute Digital 3 months ago

I've spent some time thinking about how to produce a guide that's sufficiently general to apply anywhere, but specific enough to be useful, and I am mildly stumped. I don't think I can provide an ETA at this point, especially considering the massive time investment this will require, but I do hope to make a guide someday. Of course, if you or anyone else has any specific questions, I am happy to answer them, you can also join the Discord for an easier platform to discuss.

I usually turn to foreach whenever possible, but the main issue with foreach is that you're not allowed to edit elements you're cycling through while you're at it.

    • Wintermute Digital
      Wintermute Digital 4 months ago

You can edit elements, but not insert or delete them. For deletion, a backwards for loop tends to work well. Also, make use of LINQ methods for easy list manipulations, it's crazy how efficient some of those are for sorting, searching and transforming.
