great demo, but didn't you bend in the opposite direction ? the bend that was over 90 was last?

    • Jere Kirkpatrick
      Jere Kirkpatrick 3 days ago

Hi Adam. The sequence began with the shortest leg at the top (bend 1). Bend 2 was the second 90deg. bend always moving in the same direction from the start. That would make the last bend over 90deg. to close the tank. I hope this clears up your question. Thanks for watching and good question. Jere

@Roadster Lover Media Shortly I will have a video up on using copper as filler. The next two videos will be on bending. First will be on sheet metal and the second will be for tubing. Both will be with as little math as possible. Thanks for watching and stay tuned. Jere

@Ron Covell You and @Jere Kirkpatrick would be a great collaboration to do more real world 'no math' content guided by 2 combined lifetimes of getting tasks done. I also look for any way to avoid math and would get so much out of 'no math content' for successful metalshaping. Practical Fabrication Math I, Practical Fabrication Math II, Practical Fabrication Math III. Please? Thanks for allowing the event to be taped.

Hi Ron. You have received much praise on the way you explained what you were doing during your demo. The way you showed what you were doing and why really helped a lot of people. Thanks for such a great demonstration. Almost 600 views in less than a day. You rock. Jere

  • Randy Tait

Bend 2 90 degree angles a known dimension. Measure after bending. The difference is how much it grows. Subtract that from all your lengths.

    • Jere Kirkpatrick
      Jere Kirkpatrick 6 days ago

Hi Randy. That would work for a 90 only. A bend more or less than 90 would take up more or less material from tangent. Thanks for watching and your input. Jere

    • Ron Covell
      Ron Covell 6 days ago

That will work great for 90-degree bends. How would you deal with bends that are NOT 90-degrees? And if you are starting from and ending at ends that will be curled, that throws a monkey wrench into the calculations, too.

People used to ask me when I was bending sheet or bar if used bend allowance. I would tell them, yes, I allow more metal than is needed and then cut the legs to length. If I had to bend a sheet like Ron was doing, I used the same method. His method is best because one has control of where the bend starts. Thank you Ron I am going to make some bending setups like the one you show. Thank you, Jere for sharing.

    • Jere Kirkpatrick

Thanks Jere, Some good info in there. He has shown his use of the round bar against the square in other videos and it really does work well. But you knew that. ;) Ron asked "How long is a string?" It would seem that it's never the right length without adjustment. ;)

    • Joe Doucette
      Joe Doucette 6 days ago

Phil Remington was right but some craftsmen like you folks finish their tools to a higher level than others. I'm one of those others. :) Gee.. that's a mighty nice offer on the string but shipping even air is crazy these days. I wouldn't want to bankrupt you. ;) Joe

    • Jere Kirkpatrick
      Jere Kirkpatrick 6 days ago

Hi Joe. Ron is always coming up with one off tools to make his work easier. I was told by Phil Remington in 1963 that "the sign of a true craftsman is one who makes his own tools". Let me know if you need a length of string. I will cut to any length I want and ship free. Jere

@Joel L I will bring his demo into my editing program and see if I can make a coherent presentation. I'll check it out. Thanks. Jere

@Jere Kirkpatrick Jere.... I'm sure that I'm not alone in thinking there would be many of us who would love to see Gene's demo even without his description along the way. It still surprises me how many times I pick on things by just watching without a voice over. Maybe without much editing effort on your part you could post his demo with a brief introduction of what he will be doing and why we wont hear him, and just add some very low volume background music during his demo. All the best to you 😀

Hahahahhaha Cookies and milk. That made me chuckle out loud. :) I'm not always observant. One bad eye makes that sort of thing hit and miss but when watching someone like you folks demonstrate things.. it's good to try and focus. Cookies and milk, indeed. Have a great day.

    • Jere Kirkpatrick
      Jere Kirkpatrick 12 days ago

Hi Joe, You are quite observant. I doubt few have picked up on that. With hitting off-dolly and glancing blows he was sure not to leave hammer marks in the work piece. I was sort of cringing myself as he was horsing on the vise. I gave it some cookies and milk that night for doing such a good job and not snapping in half. Thanks. Jere

Ron, It was a hard decision whether or not to play the whole talk. I finely thought it would be best shown in it's entirety. Those who have herd the second half could click away. Those who have not herd it deserved to hear the whole thing. Let me know your thoughts. Jere

Jere, Aaron certainly did give a great presentation and it's nice that you posted this as a stand-alone video from the "Metal Bashing Meet - 2021 - Introduction" that you had posted on 15 Oct 2021. This way he gets top billing. :) Joe

Yes, Jere... it was a better motivational speach than what I heard most of the many "professionsl" motivational speakers deliver in the 20 years I spent as an instructor at a community college. Ooo that was a long sentence. Sorry. I'm tired. ;) I hope you are adjusting well to the change at the shop. I'm certain that it must be odd to not have that "division" anymore. Joe

Hi Joe. The first portion was brand new and not seen before. As I was editing I made the decision to show his whole talk. It was too good to leave any of it out. Thanks. Jere

Thanks again Jere for sharing these presentations for all of us who were unable to attend. Nice to get a small glimpse of how a master calmly executes their craft. I see in other comments it mentioned that Mick really enjoyed sharing. I sure hope he finds more outlets in the future to keep the craft alive. Happy New year. 2022 is going to be awesome 👍👍😎👍👍

I will be sure to mention it on my channel and hopefully send viewers his way. I'm working on Aaron Greens demo now and hope to have it up this weekend. Hope you have a great 2022. Jere

I want to put it in a place where it can stay ready. To answer your question, hopefully sometime in January. Thanks for your interest. Jere

Hello Silk Hat. I talked to Mick this morning and he gets his at a fencing company. It is just galvanized wire that is strung at the lower edge of chain link fencing and is easy to form. Good question. Jere

    • Horace Rumpole
      Horace Rumpole 21 day ago

@Bob Stephens no, however it is bent easily with heat, and adds stiffness that roll wire can't. Your long sides can be pre-bent to the radius needed.

    • Bob Stephens

@Horace Rumpole is that galvanised? He did mention the wire being gal.
