Initializing a Cooldown on an Ability | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [20]
Not much to say about this one! To keep the player from spamming one ability constantly, there needs to be a cooldown! I arbitrarily decided on 15 seconds for "Hop." The challenge here was making sure the cooldown kept counting down despite switching characters, while being visible when playing Deirdre, but invisible while playing anyone else. In the end, though, it wasn't too complicated! It just uses a lot of objects.

Let's Stun our Slimes! Adding Status Effects | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [19]
Views 2726 months ago
After hopping onto an enemy, it's time to stun them! This video introduces how I'm planning on using Databases to hold a lot of information for each particular status effect. I've got 1 object that basically turns into whatever status effect I'm applying... Note that since recording this video, I have redone the logic here. Instead of the "Status Effect" object turning into Stun, it now instead...
Using Our First Ability: Hop! | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [18]
Views 1996 months ago
Since we've got our basic abilities programmed, it's time to make our first ability! For Deirdre, I've given her the ability: Hop! 'Cause she's a bunny, get it?? For this ability to activate, the player will need to press and hold down Q to determine where exactly she will jump to. Once she's landed, she will damage and stun the enemies underneath! Using the Mouse to Interact with the Menu Scene | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [17]
Views 2086 months ago
This was a doozy of a conundrum to figure out! Basically, the engine really wants nothing to do with the mouse or cursor - it's an engine for the controller! But I'm determined to be able to use the mouse so I sorta brute forced my way into making it work. The biggest issue was the fact that there is no built-in "Mouse Screen X / Y" coordinate variable - it only exists for the map. But that doe...
Basic attacks for all my party members! | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [16]
Views 1646 months ago
I needed to give my party members something to do when their abilities are all on cooldown (not that any abilities are programmed yet...)! So right now they all have a very basic attack that typically just functions on left mouse click. Except Deirdre, who just needs to be in range of an enemy. The other members act as a little shooter minigame where they aim at the cursor! There's still a few ...
Party Following System | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [15]
Views 1686 months ago
We talked about how the party members can follow you around in a previous episode, but I had to fix it up once I added all 4 members! The order in which they follow is slightly different depending on who is the main playable character. Luckily my game is simple with a linear story, so deciding the general path was easy. I also talk about how I had to fix the Ladder system since that logic didn'...
Revised Enemy AI | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [14]
Views 2666 months ago
I redid some of the enemy AI! It's still extremely simple with just a single headbutt attack, and I do plan on making more creative enemies later (although for an ARPG, how creative do they get??). This revised AI has the slime following the player up to a certain point. Then when they are done running, instead of chillin' in place, they go back to their original spot! "The Zone!" Basic Party Follower Attack AI | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [13]
Views 1906 months ago
Here is my basic, rather rudimentary Party Follower AI! It's split up into two sequences: whether there is a "targeted" creature, or whether the follower is aggressive or not. Oh yeah that's new too - press F to make the party members aggressive, and then they will run and attack whoever they want! The logic meets up in the middle to determine whether the followers run away from an enemy or not...
Revised click-to-target system! | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [12]
Views 1326 months ago
So my click-to-target system from before was not going the way I wanted. It worked but it was kinda clunky. So I decided to remove it and start from scratch with the challenge of not using any "lock" runtime actions! In the end I created a weird parent/child relationship with fields of vision. I think it works a lot better now! Socials & Links Watch me on Twitch! I stream Mondays, Tuesdays, and...
Switch between controlling different party members! | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [11]
Views 1886 months ago
This devlog shows my progress in making a rudimentary party system in my game! I made it so that you can switch between party members at will by simply pressing a number. There's also a following system kinda like RPG Maker. This first video shows how the party member follows another character, and how you can switch to control a different party member! Now prioritize attacking the targeted creature! | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [9]
Views 1647 months ago
The first step (Part 1) was to target the creature. Now we need to prioritize attacking that targeted creature! It's still a little glitchy but the main idea/logic is there. Maybe you can use this information to make your own cool click-to-attack system! Socials & Links Watch me on Twitch! Click an enemy to target it! | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [8]
Views 2007 months ago
It seems Pixel Game Maker MV really focuses on Controller support, which is great! But I want to make a keyboard and mouse game (with controller support added later, probably). One important aspect of kbm games is to be able to click your enemies to target them! I show you how I set this up! Socials & Links Watch me on Twitch! Programming LADDERS with automatic movement in PGM | Pixel Game Maker MV Devlog [7]
Views 2697 months ago
Ladders are easy in RPG Maker, but involve some programming logic in Pixel Game Maker MV! It was a lot of fun trying to figure out how to get the ladder system to work.
